MS. MARJORIE KING DONATED HER NEW BOOK TO THE LIBRARY

Ms. Marjorie King of the Bilingual Department has recently published a book titled China’s American Daughter: Ida Pruitt.  This biography, which took Ms. King 25 years to accomplish, tells the life story of Ida Pruitt, a bicultural woman born in the 19th century of American missionaries and raised in a small Chinese village. In the book Ms. King shared how Ida Pruitt brought a unique perspective to her notable oral history through her own life experience. At the start of the writing of this book, Ms. Marjorie King had been a visiting scholar in the department of East Asian studies at the University of Arizona. She studied Chinese in Taiwan in 1975, and later lived in Beijing for three years. Ms. King’s personal experience of both American and Chinese cultural brought her closer to Ida Pruitt as she wrote her story. Ms. King knew Ida Pruitt in person, and received 38 boxes of Ida’s personal and professional papers which became the foundation of the book. She also visited the Rockefeller Foundation's Peking Union Medical College and read all of Ida’s logs and records to enrich her book. Such a thorough and delicate piece of work takes immense amount of time and dedication, and thus it took 25 years to become reality. Ms. King has donated a few autographed copies to the NEHS library for all to enjoy. We thank her for her generous donation, and hope that our students, teachers and parents will find time to enjoy the book.
