FRIENDS FROM SISTER PARK IN WASHINGTON STATE VISITS NEHS
The Chairman, Vice Chairman, and Executive Director of Tri-Cities Science and Technology Park in Richland, Washington, USA--Mr. Michael Henry, Michael Schwenk and Mrs. LoAnn Ayers had a pleasant visit at our school on December 5. This park became a sister park with our Hsinchu Science Park last June when Dr. Kung Wang, the Director General of Hsinchu Park, visited them and signed a contract of agreement. During the visit to NEHS, possible interesting connections between schools in these two parks were discussed. Hopefully, sister school relationships can be developed by establishing exchange programs in the near future.
SCIENCE ASAHI MAGAZINE JAPAN REPORTS ON NEHS
The popular Japanese biweekly, Science Asahi Magazine, reported on our school in it's recent issue no.27, 1997, published on November 21. Focusing on Taiwan, a speical article “Taiwan--an Island of Computers’ introduced high technology, industry, research and development, and education in Taiwan. In interviewing principal Li-ming Tai and observing our Bilingual Department, this article described the solid bilingual and bicultural programs provided for children of returning high tech professionals.
A group from Mainland China, consisting of 18 principals of model high schools and vocational high schools and officers from their government, visited us on December 12. This event was arranged by our National Education Association and China Mainland Affairs, Executive Yuan. Teachers and administrators at NEHS had a great time sharing their experiences with their counterparts across the straits. On the same day, another group including 18 academic and business leaders from Mainland China also paid us a visit.
On November 26, the Bilingual Department invited Professor Chia-Wei Lee from Tsing-Hua University to give a speech on the fossil discovery of plants and living creatures in paleozoi. Professor Lee showed the audience slides he took during his trip to two provinces in China(Yun Nan and Kuei Chou), a fertile ground where scientists have found many significant fossils which have helped people understand how the world evolved from the past. To give the audience a taste of paleontology, a two-billion-year-old rock was passed among the audience. With the touch of the rock, the audience could not help but feel the wonders of life.
The curriculum of the gifted program of the Elementary Department very often combines the questions of daily life and innovative, discovery activities. On October 16, students from the gifted program visited Startek Company in the Science-Based Park. As part of the instructional activities, they looked, in particular, at the“finger print identification system”by Startek. This field trip was arranged by Ms. Su-Hui Hong, Ms. Ju Chia Liu Several parents volunteered to provide transportation.
