Coral Reef Ambassadors Advance Global Competence

This year, the bilingual department¡¦s coral reef ambassadors represented National Experimental High School to conduct cooperative international academic research in Hawaii, America from January 21ST t to January 31STt. They visited places like HIMB (Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology), Waikiki aquarium, and the zoo, just to name a few. Through the visits, discussions, and many water activities with marine biologists, the coral reef ambassadors were able to enhance their contact and understanding of marine biology and coral reef. Furthermore, while visiting Stevenson Middle School and Roosevelt High School, the coral reef ambassadors from IBSH were able to interact with the students in these schools by teaching them how to write ¡u¬K¡v (spring) in calligraphy, making lanterns, and playing Chinese yoyo. Thus, the coral reef ambassadors were well-received and were able to spread the unique Taiwanese culture. IBSH spares no effort to promote international education and expand the students¡¦ perspectives of the world. The coral reef ambassadors program seeks to develop international marine research. And the ambassadors headed to National Chao Chou Senior High School on April 8th to attend the press conference to announce the results of staying abroad this time, which was impressive to all the audience.

Earth Day: Old Phone Protects Rainforest

April 22 is Earth Day, so our middle and high school departments proposed turning off lights at noon to save energy; other departments of the school also united to protect our planet earth. NEHS launched the “Old Cell Phones, Save the Rainforest!?event, which originates from the forests of Braham, wherein 90% of deforestation activity is illegal. Because the resultant greenhouse gases occupy 17% of air—significantly more than all the world’s transportation, including plane, car, train, truck, and ferry added up together (13%)—they are the second major cause of climate change. If we reuse old smart phones and recycle solar panel spin-offs from factory manufacturing, we can make a receiver that reacts to electric saw sounds and make use of a current GSM network that alerts local guards of illegal deforestation activity. Rather than throwing away your old phones for recycling, we could all donate them for our beautiful planet Earth!

The Success of Dream Hi-Future Educational Ideals Exhibition

The Ministry of Education hosted  ream Hi Future Educational Ideals Exhibition from April 15th to April 17th at the Hua-shan Innovation Park. The exhibition highlighted Taiwan’s opportunities to and innovation in utilizing technology like the Internet to cultivate students sense of international awareness, to start moving away from the old model of education. This exhibition divided itself into rural futurism, innovative futurism, international futurism, and activism futurism in order to show the various new ideals and diverse systems that have been planned from schools all over Taiwan. Our school’s coral reef ambassadors were invited to talk about their project from organizing learning materials to visiting Hawaii. At the April 15th opening ceremony, coral reef ambassadors presented their own hand-drawn notebook, and tell President Ma their story, and Ma conversed fluently with the coral reef ambassador, engaging in a series of Q&A session, bringing the ream Hi Future Educational Ideals Exhibition another layer of internationalism.

Follow Me Go!: NEHS News Station

The News Station is the elementary department’s long-standing specialty feature. In the program, teacher Zhi-Qing Zhu trains a group of talented little reporters and news anchors to gather information, undergo continual discussion and drafting, and learn the process of filming and editing. The children report on the major events of the elementary department, and the finished product is played for department teachers and students during the assemblies at the start or end of each semester. Last November, the young reporters of the News Station went to the Green Living Museum in New Taipei City to conduct interviews; they also met and cooperated with the Taiwan Public Television program Follow Me Go!. That day, the little reporters learned from the producer and the host of Follow Me Go!, understanding how a high quality exploration TV program brainstorms and plans. The host, sister Ya-Li, began affably role-playing with the little reporters, pretending to be a survivor of the terrorist attack in France or the rumored girlfriend of a Kpop idol, all to the great amusement of the children. Then, sister Ya-Li and the young reporters explored and conducted interviews together at a small farmer’s market, jointly completing an epic episode of the exploration tv program, which was played on March 29th on Follow Me Go!.

Visitors from National Experimental High School at Central Taiwan Science Park- Orienteering

On April 27th, students and teachers from National Experimental High School at Central Taiwan Science Park came to our school to join our annual orienteering activity. When the students from NEHS-CT arrived, they were splitted into nine different groups and joined NEHS and IBSH classes. Our 6th orienteering contest was held at National Chiao-Tung University. The participants included students from the sophomore and junior class in NEHS, the sophomore to senior class in IBSH, and the sophomore class from NEHS-CT, with a total of 600 students participating. Participants applied knowledge they learned from school and with the help of compasses; they were able to locate the check point stations and finish their mission in a timely fashion. Thanks to the great weather, the activity went well and brought wonderful memories for students of both schools.
