National
Honors

Outstanding achivement in IMSO
5 IBSH students, led by Ms. Christina Hsiao, participated in the
16th International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) held
in November in Hanoi, Vietnam. The competition has several
categories, including elementary mathematics and life science,
and is entirely conducted in English. The math section is
comprised of short answer questions as well as reasoning
questions; the life science exam tests students’ abilities to
reason and experiment analysis. The Taiwan representative team
received a total of 4 silver and 7 bronze medals, with IBSH
student Michelle Du winning a silver medal and Yu-Li He,
Jacqueline Lu, Jo-Yu Huang, and Kai-Er Yang winning bronze

Write for Rights Writing Marathon
The first “Write for Rights” writing marathon, held by Amnesty
International, took place in Poland numerous years ago. Since
then, people have continued to write and give support to those
whose rights have been violated. This year’s event, focused on
helping those who have spoken out at a young age, began on
December 10th, Human Rights day. It gathered millions of people
to participate through writing postcards addressed to
politicians and governments calling for justice and letters of
encouragement to the victims. Students’ Affairs office placed an
international human rights book fair outside the academic office
in the hopes of enlightening students on these issues and
encouraging them to help out.
Student Exchange Programs Building
International Relationships
NEHS organized an international education exchange program and
invited students from all around the world to build friendships
with students from Taiwan. On December 16th, IBSH’s National
Honors Society gave a warm welcome to students who came from
Kochi Ozu High School, Japan. On December 17th and 18th,
teachers and students from Wakimachi High School, Tokushima
Prefecture were welcomed by the juniors of class 3 who planned a
few science-related courses. They discussed with each other in
English and made a placopter. Finally, on the 26th of December,
Funabashi High School students in Chiba Prefecture visited the
junior Math and Science Gifted program students as part of an
exchange program that has been happening annually for seven
years. We would like to thank all the high school and the
bilingual department administrative officers and teachers for
partaking and contributing to the success of these student
exchange programs.
“Changing the World: Galileo” English
Drama for the Elementary Students
Caves Bookstore’s 2019 “Learning English while watching Drama”
event invited ArtSpot, an international English educational
group, to perform. ArtSport was established in 1997, with the
aim of using elements of theatre and the English language to let
nonnative English speaking countries understand the power of
drama. The NEHS elementary department participated in this event
and invited ArtSpot to perform at the school. English and
homeroom teachers introduced the characters and the summary of
the drama, allowing for a better understanding of the story.
“Changing the World: Galileo” tells of the story of Galileo’s
courage to embark on a journey of scientific truth. Although the
entire performance was performed in English, students were still
focused on understanding the plot. After the play ended,
students enthusiastically asked performers questions in English.
Overall, the event was full of excitement, marking a perfect
ending for this play!
