Advanced Placement Exams Yield Excellent Results
The results for the 1997-98 Advanced Placement Program exams are here! After a year of AP classes, Bilingual students took standardized AP exams during the end of May. Exams are scored on a scale from 1 to 5 with 5 being the highest. Most U.S. colleges give college credit to students with scores of 3 or better since the exam shows sufficient understanding of the subject. However, credit is determined independently at various institutions. Out of the 79 tests taken, 59 qualify for college credit at most American universities with a score of 3 or better, and 49 of those exams have received a score of 4 or 5. According to our latest information, NEHS class of '97 graduate and Stanford freshman, Sandra Liu, has accumulated 31 college credits. Ted Way, who will be attending the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor this fall, has 35 college credits. This school year the Bilingual Dept. is offering 6 Advanced Placement courses, including Physics, Chemistry, English, Calculus, U.S. History, and the new elective course, Music. |

Elementary Department Softball Team
Wins the Gold in Japanese Tournament Coach Chioh’s dedication to training the Elementary Dept. Softball Team combined with the hard work of its team members led the team to a sweeping victory this August. The softball team traveled to Japan to compete in a tournament and returned to our school as champions, having won every single game. Although only 4 games had been scheduled originally, due to the outstanding performance of the young softball players, the local team requested an additional game. The most exciting game was played against the champion team of the Osaka region. At the start of this game, our team was behind by 5 points. They persevered, however, with Principal Tai, Dean Hong and PTA president Chioh cheering them on. Finally, in the last inning, they turned the game around and won. In light of this victory, Principal Tai not only expresses pride in congratulating the team but reminds us all that winning isn’t everything. Having fun and establishing friendship are more important than winning the game. |

Two Teachers Won Outstanding Teacher Awards, Bringing Great Honor to
NEHS
Two teachers, Ms. Mei-Fan Ting and Ms.Yuan-Hwa Tang, won outstanding teacher awards from the Chao Tin-Jen Foundation and Ministry of Education respectively, bringing great honor to NEHS. Ms. Tang is currently teaching history in the Experimental Department. For the past years, Tang has contributed tremendous amounts of the energy and time to improving the quality of history education. She has used various education methods, such as skits, interrogative researching, and novel writing, to further enhance students’ understanding and possibly arouse their interests in this subject area. Ms. Ting is a Chinese teacher, also teaching in the Experimental Department. She is also very innovative and has opened up “Young Adult Novel” and “ Picture Book Analysis” as elective options, hoping to encourage and interest students in reading. In order to uncover students’ talents, Ms. Ting has also encouraged them to join various competitions, and they all did well. These two teachers not only excelled in teaching, but are also active participants in other school activities. Let us congratulate them on their exceptional performances. |

Joint Efforts by Two Science Teachers Recognized by Ministry of Education
In order to integrate science study and help students learn more about applications of the sciences, two Experimental Dept. teachers, Mr. Gen-hui Shih and Mr. Gin-fon Chen, have submitted a proposal for designing new elective programs for chemistry and physics. Approved by the Ministry of Education, the planning is already under way. The main objective of this program is to allow students to perform experiments and obtain hands-on experience. By doing so, students will be able to apply theories into real life condition. Another feature is to have students compete in groups and add fun into the program. For example, by using what they learn in class, students will be required to use a beaker and a piece of wood to design a structure that can carry the most weight. Hopefully, this will increase student interest in the scientific realm. |
