Ms. Sara Schupack
Orange
used to be my favorite color, but now it’s green. I love chocolate, swimming,
reading and writing. Spicey food, music, students’ smiles and a good story
make me happy. I’m a Californian always, but have lived in Asia for ten
years and consider this my home too. I’ve just come from Hong Kong, which
I love, and am ready to grow into Taiwan as well. Most of all I love my
family, which includes my husband, my dog, my younger sister, older sister,
mother and father and grandma. I have heard great things about the students
here in the Bilingual Department, and look forward to teaching such bright,
enthusiastic people. I do tend to expect a lot of my students, but more
than anything I look for self-growth. Learning how to learn, and thinking
about how learning affects one’s own personality and goals is crucial,
I feel, otherwise you’re just “ going through the motions” and memorizing
facts. I also believe in lifelong learning, and look forward to discovering
all that my colleagues and students have to teach me. Do I sound like
a hippie Californian? Well, I guess I am in ways, but also quite ordinary
too. Don’t expect me to wear tie-dye.

Ms. Barbara Levine
I am
from one of the corn states located in the Midwest region of the United
States, Iowa. This is my first time overseas, and I am thrilled to be
in Taiwan and a part of this community. I taught the sixth grade for three
years, and am now the fifth grade Humanities teacher. I am an explorer
at-heart, and I like to learn (I took Tai-Chi and Chinese language classes
this summer.) I love the outdoors, and I like to run for exercise. I am
interested in people, music, food and cultural experiences. I hope to
get to know many of you this year!

Mr. Jim Holland
This is
my first year in Taiwan and I am anxiously looking forward to experiencing
life here and teaching at NEHS. I have already been pleasantly surprised
by everyone’s friendly helpfulness. I have taught every social studies
class in my years as a teacher, including some electives which are not
commonly included in the curriculum...for example, the History of War
or the Future of Civilization. My wife and I chose to see the world and
continue teaching as we do so. We accepted a position at the Bilingual
Department because we haven’t experienced E. Asia and because of the excellent
reputation of its students. So far we are working on the former and haven’t
been disappointed about the latter.

Mrs. Dolores Holland
All
the experts say staying over in a new culture is highly stressful. Admittedly,
you can feel pretty helpless and a little ignorant if you get lost walking
back to your apartment after an unsuccessful attempt to find something
reassuring and familiar like tortilla chips at a nearby store. Compound
that with a vocabulary of two expressions in Chinese-hello and thank you---which
you quickly learn doesn’t get you very far into the culture( or closer
to home either!); and , then mix in the newness of absolutely everything
except the clothes you’ve taken out of your suitcase, and chances are
you’ve got a great case of hives just about to burst out. But to the credit
of NEHS and the general amiability and congeniality of the people of Hsinchu,
the stress factor has remained low for my husband and me. The administration
and staff have been wonderfully helpful, the students seem exemplary,
the food outstanding, and we have’nt really gotten lost, just momentarily
confused. So, despite what the experts say, we are excited and happy to
be here-both in Taiwan and the Experimental School.
