校慶活動熱鬧登場

  為迎接三月二十三日本校十六週年校慶,各部皆已規劃 多項活動,紛紛展開慶祝,從英文戲劇比賽、木球賽到五部 才藝表演、教學成果展等,內容都相當豐富。家長會亦同時 於三月廿二日晚間舉辦 "今夜非常實中"才藝表演及募款摸 彩活動,一起同樂。在三月廿三日當天,我們特別邀請仁愛 啟智中心四十名師生來參加校慶園遊會,每人並發校園點券 兩百元,本校慈善性社團同時會支援人力帶領他們逛校園, 分享我們的喜樂。

人事室姜慶芸主任三月九日上任

  本校原人事室劉莉婷主任已調升交大人事室組長,其職 務自三月九日起改由教育部人事處姜慶芸女士接任,我們歡 迎她加入實中的行列。

國外科展選手寄宿家庭確定

  中華民國第卅九屆中小學科學展覽會訂於三月二十二日 至二十六日在新竹市舉行,主辦單位國立臺灣科學教育館及 新竹市政府,素聞本校家長具有國際宏觀且熱心公益,因此 邀請本校擔任國外選手接待組籌備工作,熱切希望本校家長 能在科展期間提供國際選手寄宿家庭服務。目前確定有新、 日、韓、泰、菲、斐、香港、墨西哥八國,共十七名選手來 台參賽,感謝家長熱烈的反應,目前已選定高國中部及雙語 部十七個寄宿家庭來接待遠道而來的外國友人。他們並將在 三月二十二日晚間六時起,參加在活動中心舉行的歡迎餐會 及才藝表演。

簡化國中小年度招生報名
三月二十六日召開說明會

  為簡化本校國中小年度招生報名事宜,今年園區各公司 及其他相關單位如需報名,需直接進入本校網站,下載新生 入學報名管理系統,鍵入資料後存入磁碟片交回本校。本校 訂於三月二十六日上午十時在活動中心召開說明會向有關單 位解說示範。

校際讀書會宜蘭行

  本校與宜蘭羅東高中聯合舉辦校際讀書會,於二月二十 二及二月二十三日假羅東高中進行。為增進高中生對兩性關 係的認識,養成學生對異性的尊重與互助,並促進校園中兩 性關係的和諧,此次主要閱讀的書籍為Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus,全程並以英文進行。在雙語部黃湘 絮老帥的指導與圖書館馬祖瑞主任的帶領下,本校雙語及高 中部共計有13位同學參加了這次校際活動,此行除了研讀討 論指定書籍外,並參觀了羅東運動公園、親水公園、宜蘭縣 政府,對於接待家庭的熱情招待本校至表感謝。

自然科論文寫作班順利進行

  繼社會科學論文寫作班後,教務處與圖書館再接再厲又 舉辦了自然科論文寫作班,特敦請羅吉孟博士蒞校指導,希 望能培養學生撰寫正式小論文與發表口頭報告之正確方法與 能力,並加強學生運用各種應用軟體,以加速報告撰寫的速 度與準確性。第一階段有關科學論文簡介與論文寫作格式的 課程已於寒假期間上課完畢,共有二十多名學生參加。第二 階段有關研究方法概論與實作的課程目前也已陸續展開。

木球比賽熱鬧滾滾

  本校自去年四月引進國人自行研創的木球運動後,老師 們彼此相互切磋,球技日益精進,在戴校長的支持下參加了 多項比賽,也獲得了相當好的成績。為慶祝校慶,特別舉辦 「親師杯木球比賽」於二月六日首先登場,此次比賽尚配合 推動行政院體育委員會之全民運動陽光健身計劃及新竹市木 委會推廣計劃,參與對象以學校教職員工和家長為主,反應 相當熱烈,報名人數高達百餘人。經過激烈的角逐,分別由 國ㄧ三班江以進同學及會計室李素珍主任勇奪男女組冠軍。

劉恆良與蔡康勻同學課業優異獲殊榮

  雙語部十二年級劉恆良與蔡康勻同學進入美國1999年學 業優異獎學金的決選名單。這項殊榮已肯定他們的學業成就 是在全美高中畢業生的前百分之一的排行榜內。我們在此預 祝他們成功。

SCHOOL ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS BEGIN

  School anniversary fever has set in--all departments have eagerly begun preparations for NEHS's sixteenth school anniversary on March 23. Activities range from the March 6 woodball competition to the English drama contest. They also include an inter-department Talent Show as well as several classroom exhibits scheduled for March 23. The school has invited forty members of the Jin-Ai Center to take part in the festivities, allotting $200 NT in coupons to each guest. Several of the school's service clubs have volunteered to assist these visitors in touring the grounds and in sharing the day's fun and excitement.

NEW DEAN IN PERSONNEL OFFICE

  The former Dean of the Personnel Office, Ms. Liu, has transferred to a new position at Chiao Tung University. The new dean, Ms. Jian Ching-yun, who previously worked in the personnel department at the Ministry of Education, took office on March 9. We welcome her aboard.

HOST FAMILIES FOR INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE FAIR PARTICIPANTS

  The thirty-ninth annual national science fair, coordinated by the National Taiwan Science Education Center and Hsinchu city government, will be held March 22-26 in Hsinchu. Because of NEHS's reputation for global awareness and hospitality, the coordinators have asked NEHS students and families to host international science fair participants. Participants include seventeen students from eight countries--Singapore, Japan, Korea, Thailand, the Philippines, South Africa, Hong Kong, and Mexico. We have now selected all seventeen Experimental and Bilingual host families, after taking into account the visiting students' ages, genders, and individual needs. We thank all those who took the time to complete the survey, and we apologize to those families with whom we could not place a science fair student. We hope that everyone will continue to support school activities.

SIMPLER APPLICATION PROCESS FOR ELEMENTARY AND JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL

  Starting this year, companies in the Science Park and other eligible institutions can download the NEHS New Student Application Form from on-line and then send the completed electronic application to the school on a diskette. NEHS will give a briefing on March 26 at 10:00 am at the gym.

INTER-SCHOOL READING DISCUSSION GROUP

   Thirteen NEHS students attended a reading discussion group hosted jointly by NEHS and Lo Tung Senior High School in llan on February 22 and 23: each student was housed with a host family. The main purpose of this activity was to enhance students' knowledge about the relationship between the sexes, and to promote gender respect. The programs were conducted in English, and students were required to read Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus under the supervision and instruction of Ms. Suzanne Huang and Dean Ma of the NEHS library.

NATURAL SCIENCE THESIS WRITING CLASS PROCEEDS SMOOTHLY

  Following the social science thesis paper writing class, the Academic Affairs Office and the library have set up a natural science thesis writing class, taught by Dr. Lo Gi- mong. The goals of this class are to provide an opportunity for students to learn how to write a thesis paper in natural science, deliver an oral presentation, and use software effectively to increase the speed and accuracy of the thesis writing. In the first phase, which took place over winter break, over twenty students were introduced to the fundamentals of thesis writing. The second phase, which has begun recently, concerns methods of research and actual thesis writing.

WOODBALL COMPETITION HELD ON MARCH 6

   On March 6, a woodball competition, open to students, teachers and parents alike, was held to celebrate the school anniversary as well as to promote this interesting sport and support the " Exercise and Get Healthy " campaign endorsed by the Executive Yuan. More than one hundred people participated. After fierce competition, Jiang Yi-jing from the Experimental seventh grade and the Dean of the Accounting Office won first place, respectively, in the men's and women's categories.

TWO BILINGUALS HONORED AS MERIT FINAUSTS

  Eugene Liu and Kang-yun Tsai have been named finalists in the 1999 Merit Scholarship Award competition, sponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Program in the United States. This places them in a group representing fewer than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. We wish them the best of luck in the continuing selection process for a National Merit Scholarship Award.
