Year 2001 Graduation Ceremony
|
The graduation
ceremonies of the year 2001 have been
held on the nights of June 14 (Bilingual Department) and
June 15 ( Experimental Department ) and the morning of
June 16 ( Elementary Department )
. This year , the
decoration has been done
by students under the
leadership of Ms. Terry
Wang of the Bilingual
Department , and we hope that
this year's graduation
will become a good memory for the graduating students.
On the day of graduation
, the students sadly said
goodbye under the blessings of
parents and teachers.
This month's NEHS Newsletter
is a special issue
dedicated to the graduating students. For more detailed
information, please read pages three to ten. We wish the
graduates good luck.

Mr. Shih Chien- Hwey and Mrs. Helen Jou Selected as Power Teacher Representatives in Hsinchu Area
|
Mr. Shih
Chien-Hwey of the Experimental Department
and Mrs. Helen Jou of the Bilingual Department were
announced as the winners of the second annual Power
Teacher Award in Hsinchu area. Along with two other
teachers , both Mr. Shih and Mrs. Jou will be nominated
to the National Teachers' Association
to compete with
teachers island wide for the national award. Mr. Shih and
Mrs. Jou have been elected for this award because of their
diligence, creativity and good interactions with students.
NEHS congratulates them for being
honored as Power
Teachers.

Evelyn Shih of the Bilingual Department is Awarded the National Merit Scholarship
|
Every
year , approximately ten million American high
school students take the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude
Test ( PSAT ). Of these ten million students, half million
are selected as commended scholars
while only 7700
become semi-finalists for the National Merit
Scholarship
Award.With the strong competition, it is highly admirable
for student Evelyn Shih to
win the National Merit
Scholarship Award . We predict that she will be just as
successful in college.

Kindergarten English Presentation a Great Success
|
The
Kindergarten Department held
an entertaining
English Presentation at the
Elementary Department
Multimedia Room on June 2. The Program started off on
a high note with family sing-along activities in English.
Following the song was a drama performance directed
by teachers, featuring classic plays such as The Golden
Goose, The Ugly Duckling, The Big Bad Wolves. Those
kindergarteners did not show any stage fright at all when
speaking English on the
stage . A long thunderous
applause and tables full of refreshments awarded these
adorable kindergarteners for their
cute, yet successful
performance.

Elementary Department Wins Website Award
|
Elementary Department teacher Tien Ray-Chen took her
students from the gifted
program to compete in a
competition set up by the Taiwanese Internet Exhibition.
The class , using " Silicon
and Orchid in the Golden
Mountain Side " as their website
topic , analyzed the
relations between humanities and
technology at the
Golden Mountain Side, a district right next to the Science
Park . After two months of
hard work , the class was
awarded for their efforts. The award ceremony will take
place on June 16 at the Taipei Commerce Building.

Transpacific Teleconference Proceeds Successfully
|
Since the
beginning of this semester
, some junior
students from the Experimental
Department , led by
Ms . Fan Pin - Hui , an
intern at the Experimental
Department , have been
participating in Global
Collaboration 2001 , a program hosted
by Blair High
School in the U.S. Participants of this program come from
countries all over the world, including Finland, Australia,
the U . S . , Mexico, China and Japan. On May 24, after
months of discussion and
preparation , Experimental
students attended a teleconference
with Blair High
students, during which they exchanged views on youth
pop culture today. Experimental students also performed
a few magic tricks using
chemistry , impressing their
American counterparts on the other side
of the Pacific.
After the conference , students on both sides continued
corresponding via email to get to know each other better.
Technology has truly shortened the distances between
people of the 21st century.

The Hilarious Unplugged Concert
|
On the
night of June 1 , Bilingual students
held an
Unplugged Concert at the Multimedia
Room to raise
money for charity. They sold a total of 140 tickets with
all profits donated to Je-Kwan Orphanage. That night,
students from grade seven to twelve performed a total of
17 programs. Mr. Kehrle and Mr. Mcleod were asked to
host the concert. They entertained the audience as body
builders and old men, whose performance drew roars of
laughte r from the
audience . It was quite a night to
remember.

Impressive Research Presentation by Experimental Juniors
|
The
Experimental Department juniors of the gifted math
and science class has been conducting research in the
five areas of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology,
and information science for almost a year. One June 5,
nine groups of these talented
students presented their
varied research results
using advanced computer
presentation software , and left
a good impression on
those who attended the presentation.

Elementary Department Graduation Field Trip
|
For the
first time , the Elementary Department held a
two-day graduation field trip for the sixth graders. From
May 31 to June 1, the seven graduating classes split into
two groups . One group
went to Wan - Rei Forest
Recreation Park while the other
went to Flying Cow
Ranch . This trip gave the
sixth graders a wonderful
experience that will last in their memories forever.

Renowned Author Wen Shao-ping Gives Speech
|
At the "Seize the Golden Moment" program's invitation,
renowned author
Shao-ping Wen came to our school on
June 1 to talk about Love in Literature and Films. Ms.
Wen used the love stories in Academy Award-winning
Chinese film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and the
popular Korean soap opera Blue Life-and-Death Love to
help her audience understand the relations between the
two genders. A teacher Peng Hwan-shu was also invited
to train the students' bodies and souls; he designed lots of
activities to help the students
strengthen their bodies.
Seize the Golden Moment ,
an enrichment program
focusing on who freshmen who don't need to take the
basic academic testing again , has successfully end on
June 8.
