二十週年校慶 熱鬧滾滾　全校歡騰

本校二十週年校慶活動於三月二十三日熱烈展開，除了在活動中心舉行教師才藝表演及各部表演慶生活動之外，另有民歌比賽、老照片展、新詩朗誦表演、跳蚤市場及園遊會等各式活動一同進行，更邀請到魏海敏女士蒞臨演講「國劇賞析」。活動精采，請勿錯過。詳細活動時間及地點請見第四頁。

高三學測逾七成達頂標　去年國三學測全國第一

本校高三同學參加學科能力測驗成績表現耀眼，全年段一百二十九位同學中，成績在七十到七十五級分的共有二十五人，而五科達頂標總分六十分以上的有九十二人，合計全校五科達頂標六十分以上的同學高達百分之七十一點三，遠高於全國平均僅百分之十點二六。高三 2 班張博亭五科總分更達七十五級分滿分，是新竹地區唯一得到滿分的同學。另據中國時報三月四日報導，本校國中部去年學測總平均分數高達二二一點四七分，榮居全國第一

。預祝今年高國中部的畢業生都榮登金榜，進入理想的學校系所！

雙語部楊清筠、盧卓恩同學　榮獲美國國家卓越獎學金

雙語部十二年級楊清筠及盧卓恩兩位同學參加美國學業成就測驗前測，成績優異，在眾多角逐者中脫穎而出，並榮獲美國國家卓越獎學金，確為殊榮。每年約有一百萬名美國高中生參加此次競賽，其中約有五萬名學生進入初步候選名單，經進一步篩選只有七千七百人能進入最後總決選，競爭十分激烈。同時楊清筠、盧卓恩同學已分別獲得美國著名學府哈佛大學及麻省理工學院之提前入學許可。在此恭賀並預祝她們今年畢業後，繼續在大學中同樣有出色的表現。

國小少棒隊　全國聯賽新竹區賽　勇奪冠軍

本校國小部少棒隊，在邱中正老師的領軍指導及全體隊員勤奮操練之下，代表學校出賽，迭獲佳績。三月七至九日在市立棒球場參加由教育部主辦的九十一學年度國民小學棒球運動聯賽，表現出色取得新竹地區冠軍，並取得代表權於五月參加全國大賽。在此預祝他們勝利成功，再度為校爭光!

國小部與美國密蘇里州學生　首次視訊會談圓滿成功

本校國小部六年三班的同學與美國密蘇里州 Independence City Bryant 小學於二月十九日上午在第一會議室進行兩校學生第一次視訊會談。在一個小時的通訊時間內，六年三班的同學們不但由螢幕上看到了對方的夥伴，聽他們介紹當地的特色，更一個個地在螢光幕前大方、清楚地用英文介紹實驗中學，一天的生活，以及新年、元宵節等節慶的民俗活動。雙方的孩子都非常地興奮，也更熱烈地期待接下來交換班級網頁及個人檔案等其他一系列的交流活動! (詳見八、九頁專文介紹)

高國中英語唱遊戲劇比賽　精彩絕倫

高中部於二月二十六日（三）周會時間，於活動中心舉辦兩年一度的高一、高二英語話劇比賽，國中部則於三月五日( 三 )下午分別於活動中心、多功能教室舉辦年度國一英語歌曲演唱及國二話劇比賽。各班在長時間的用心準備下皆展現超水準的演出。同學們不但在台上展現出流暢生動的英語能力，更在題材、劇本、佈景、特效上表現出實中學生富創意的巧思，使在場觀眾齊聲叫好。這幾場比賽競爭激烈，每班各有千秋，讓評審老師傷透腦筋，討論再三，最後頒發各年級冠軍給高二一班、高一一班、國二三班、及國一五班。

本校奈米科技人才規劃小組　參加教師研習營並作專題報告

本校於去年九月初獲選為奈米科技人才培育計劃之標竿學校，立即成立校內『奈米科技人才規劃小組』。多位各部教師積極參與本計劃之研究工作，不但已多次參加校外相關演講，並於校內規劃及進行奈米相關知識的推廣計劃。本月 8 日上午九至十二時在行政大樓第一會議室，舉辦『高中生奈米科技研習營』。20日各部教師一同參觀工業技術研究院相關研究。28及29兩日全體規劃委員參加奈米科技人才培育計劃K-12教師研習營，會中本校教師金仁初、陳元彰、林秋月、馮蕙卿、蔣先舜、曾宏煇等均將作專題報告。

雙語部中國週活動　年味十足　喜氣洋洋

雙語部家長會與中文教師會於三月十七至二十一日，每天中午十二時至一時在雙語部音樂教室前停車場舉辦中國週活動。家長們熱心地準備了多項與中華文化有關的各項春節民俗活動，包含捏麵人、採高蹺、寫春聯、糖葫蘆

、毽子擂台戲、布袋戲、畫糖、剪紙、扯鈴擂台會、國樂介紹及演奏等。學生們興致高昂地參與，活潑熱鬧地享用了一場豐富的文化饗宴!

NEHS 20TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

NEHS will celebrate its 20th anniversary March 23. Activities  will  include  the teachers'  talent show,  folk  song  contest,  old  picture displays,  modern   poetry  reading, flea market,  and other festivities, not  to  mention  a  speech by Miss  Ha -Min  Wei  on Chinese opera analysis and  appreciation. NEHS STUDENTS RANK TOP ON STANDARDIZED TESTS

The seniors  of  the High School Department performed extremely well on the scholastic achievement test taken on January 24 and 25. The test is  scored on a scale of  0-75.  Senior Samuel Chang was the only student in the Hsinchu area to attain the full  score of  75. Out of  the 129  seniors who  took  the test, 25 scored  between 70  and  75. Over 71%  of  NEHS  students   scored  in  the  top  twenty- fifth percentile (scored 60 and above), compared to 10.26% nationwide. In addition, according to a  report in the China Times  March 4, the junior high school students of NEHS averaged  221.47  (out of 300) on last year's junior high  school  scholastic achievement  test,  the top  average  nationwide. We wish this year's graduating students much academic success!

BILINGUAL STUDENTS MICHELLE YANG, GRACE 

LO WIN NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP

Bilingual Department seniors Michelle Yang and Grace Lo were recently  announced  National  Merit  Scholarship   finalists for  2003. This  prestigious  award  is  given to less than one  percent of all U.S. high school graduating seniors. Additionally, Michelle Yang and Grace Lo  have  received  acceptan-  ces from Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, respectively.  Congratul- ations  to  Michelle  and  Grace,  and  best  wishes  in  continuing  their  superior  performance during college. 

ELEMENTARY DEPARTMENT BASEBALL TEAM 
WINS CITY CONTEST AND MOVES ON TO 
NATIONAL COMPETITION IN MAY

NEHS  Elementary   Department  baseball  team, coached by  Mr.  Tony  Chiu, has  brought  victories  home.  The  team  joined  the Hsinchu  city  contest  held  in the city baseball  field  March 7, 8, and 9 where they won the championship, which  advanced  them to the play-off in the National Competition in May. Congratulations and best wishes for another triumph!

ELEMENTARY DEPARTMENT STUDENTS 
SUCCESSFULLY SPEAK TO PEERS IN MISSOURI

On  February 19, thirty-nine  students in class three of  grade  six in the Elementary  Department  held  their first videoconference with Missouri's Bryant Elementary School in the  First  Conference  Room.  Not only did NEHS  students  see their American  counterparts  and  hear  accounts  of American life, but they also unabashedly used their English skills to  talk  about our school and a typical day in their lives,  as well as  explain the Lantern Festival  and  the  Chinese  New Year. Both  groups  of  excited  students eagerly await the upcoming exchange of class web pages and personal information files. See pages 8 and 9 for details.

EXPERIMENTAL DEPARTMENT ENGLISH 
ACTIVITIES HELD SUCCESSFULLY

High-school students hosted their biannual English drama contest for juniors  and  sophomores in  the  gym  Wednesday,  February  26,  while the middle  school  held the  seventh - grade  English  singing  contest   and  the   eighth - grade  drama   contest   in  the  gym  and  multi - purpose  room on  March 5.  After weeks  of practice,  students  astounded  judges  with  their mastery  over  English,  ingenuity of  scripts,  and  the  creativity of scenery  and  props.  Competition was  fierce, though  classes  H2-1, H1-1,M2-3, and M1-5 managed to bring back the trophies. 

TEACH ERS PRESENT REPORTS AT 
NANOTECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP

Last September, NEHS was chosen by the  Ministry  of  Education  as  one  of   seven  model  schools  for  the  advancement  of  nanotechnology.  Since  then,  teachers  from  different   departments  have attended seminars  and  promoted  knowledge  of  nanotechnology  among  students.  On  March  20,  teachers  toured   the  Industrial  Technology  Research  Institute  (  ITRI  )  to   learn   about  ongoing nanotechnological  research.  On  the  28 and  29,   Mr. Hung -  huei  Tseng  and  some  other  NEHS  teachers  will present reports at a nanotechnology workshop for K-12 teachers.

BILINGUAL DEPARTMENT CHINESE WEEK 
FESTIVAL GENERATES MUCH EXCITEMENT

To further introduce Chinese culture to students  and to celebrate the  school's  twentieth anniversary,  the PTA  of  the  Bilingual  Department  held  a  Chinese Week Festival  March 17 to 21.  At the noon  lunch hour many  students,  teachers,  and   parents  gathered   in   the  quadrangle  for  a  celebration  with various  activities  such as  Rice - Dough  Figures,  Stil - Walking, 'Spring Couplets' Writing, etc. Thanks to the efforts of the parents, the activities were fun and exciting.
