九十二學年度 快樂迎新
本校新、舊任校長於八月八日在教育部中部辦公室交接。前任校長戴禮明博士帶著同仁及學生們的敬意與不捨
，前往新竹高商履新。新任校長吳榕峰博士積極帶領並參與各部迎新活動。雙語及高國中部於九月十日分別舉辦國際餐會及營火晚會熱鬧歡迎吳校長、新進教師以及學生。國小部則於十八日在活動中心，由四年級的大哥哥姊姊牽著一年級新生的小手進入會場，並以謝明媛老師新編的活潑歌曲和同學們快樂的舞蹈表達歡迎的熱忱

教育部長官蒞校視導 諸多嘉勉
教育部中部辦公室顏火龍主任及教育部范巽綠政務次長分別於九月九日及二十七日蒞校視導，對行政及教師同仁帶來諸多的鼓勵與期勉，本校將秉持一貫認真辦學之精神，戮力以赴，以不負兩位長官對本校的期許與厚愛
。

中小學科展 國小部榮獲全國亞軍 竹市冠軍
國小部資源班兩位老師洪素惠及劉如加，指導九位學生代表本校，於七月四日參加新竹市國民中小學科展，不但在數學及化學科奪得冠軍，更以總共多達六件得獎作品，榮獲新竹市團體獎第一名。其中，劉如加老師指導林昱諠、黃中道同學研究之數學專題『最佳全翻位的探討』，獲選晉級參加八月二十五至二十九日在台東體育學院舉辦的第四十三屆全國中小學科展，並榮獲全國國小組數學科第二名之殊榮。特此感謝兩位老師辛勤的指導以及對孩子們的啟發! (得獎名單詳見榮譽榜)

思源大賽 高二學生獲金、銅牌大獎
由思源科技教育基金會主辦的2003 年思源科技創意大賽，總決賽於九月十三日在逢甲大學舉行，共有北、中、南三區共十七隊，從參加初賽的七十隊高中職隊伍脫穎而出，通過各地區複賽，參加最後角逐。本校高二 2 班
劉瓅涵等五位學生所組成的「C.P.M.」隊勇奪全國金牌及十萬元獎金；劉瓅涵個人更獲「 最佳化學創意關卡獎
」。而由高二 1、3、4 班薛郁齡等八位同學組成的隊伍則榮獲銅牌獎。今年本校高二共有九支隊伍通過初賽，
更有四個團隊在決賽中囊括多項獎項，所有參賽學生在施建輝、林秋月、及陳金楓三位老師日夜辛勤指導之下
，於暑期中與骨牌、科學實驗揮汗奮戰，不但創造了難忘的暑期經歷，更為自己及實中贏得極大的榮耀! (得獎

十一月八日校運會 敬請撥冗參加
九十二學年度全校運動會將於十一月七、八兩日在大操場盛大舉行。七日 (周五)將進行全校六年級以下班級(含幼稚、國小、及雙語部)之運動競賽項目。八日 (周六) 則進行開幕典禮、全校七至十二年級 ( 含雙語部及高國中部)   運動競賽項目以及國小部趣味競賽總決賽。今年校運會除了鼓勵學生運動強身、活潑團結、爭取個人及班
級的榮譽之外，最大的特色，是在「 大隊接力 」及「 兩人三腳接力賽 」中，不但將全校各部教職員用電腦隨
機取樣， 混部編組，以拉近各部同仁間的距離， 更大力邀請家長會、 園區管理局、以及園區廠商派隊參加。
盛況可期，敬請熱烈參與。

『弦話四季』 樂聲悠揚
本校弦樂團於九月六日晚間七時，於清華大學禮堂舉辦『弦話四季 』社團成果發表會。演出以優美的『卡農 』揭開序幕，接著韋瓦地的『四季』更是由程彥凱、王擘元、李婕、潘詠庭四位同學帶來精湛的獨奏，隨後葛利格的『霍爾堡組曲』、趙菁文作曲的『夜來香之吻』以及安可曲『不可能的任務』，曲曲獲得在場觀眾熱烈的掌聲。感謝蔡幸娟老師的指導，也恭賀團員們以勤奮努力所換得的成功與掌聲!

樊敖宣油畫個展 「十七歲的蛻變」
高三1班學生樊敖宣於九月七日至三十日在交通大學浩然圖書館舉辦個人油畫展「十七歲的蛻變 」。這是樊敖
宣自 12 歲首次個展以來第四次個展，共展出十六幅近期油畫作品，本期刊頭「 蟬叫林田山 」即為其一。從展
出的畫作中，師生藉由作者日益精湛的表現技巧，一起經歷成長歲月中面臨的煩惱、苦悶、憂鬱，以至克服，而到蛻變；不僅看到一位誠懇、認真、謙和、執著的畫者，也見證熱情的生命力量。

Covenant Players短劇表演 幽默逗趣 意涵豐富
雙語部邀請 Covenant Players 劇團於十月八日為小學及中學階段學生各演出一場表演活動。上午十一時，在多功
能教室為一至六年級學生上演的是『 The  Real  Test 』等四齣迷你劇；下午一時在活動中心為七至十二年級的學
生演出的則是『The Changeover 』等兩齣短劇。Covenant Players 劇團是一群環遊世界之美籍教育表演者，在活動
中以幽默逗趣的短劇表演，以及即席互動、生動有趣的方式，引導學生觀察、思考、討論、並找出較為妥適的方法，來處理生活週遭切身的事情以及人際關係。當天的兩場表演共吸引了約七百名師生，在演員豐富的肢體語言引導下，都非常的專注投入，不但熱烈地參與討論，還輪流自願上台參與表演活動。散場時，更是意猶未盡的討論劇情及活動內容。確實是一場非常值得觀賞學習的精采演出。

WELCOME TO THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR
On August 8, the old and the new principals of NEHS met in the Ministry of Education's Central Office to complete the  transition 
of power. New principal Dr. Rong- feng Wu enthusiastically led and participated in many welcoming activities. The Bilingual Department and the High School Department held, respectively, an International Dinner and a Campfire Event on September 10 and the Elementary Department held their welcome party in the gym on September 18. Once again, we'd like to give a warm welcome to all the new members of our big family and we hope they join us in having a wonderful time at NEHS.

OFFICIALS OF MINISTRY OF EDUCATION VISIT NEHS
Two officials of the  Ministry  of  Education recently visited NEHS. Mr. Huo-Lung Yen, the director of the Central Office,  and Ms. Sun-Lu Fan, the Deputy Minister, visited NEHS on September 9 and 27 respectively.  They both  approved the  school's  educational accomplishment. In return Principal Wu promised the continuing efforts from all the staff to make NEHS an even more  successful school.

ELEMENTARY DEPARTMENT WINS SILVER MEDAL IN NATIONAL SCIENCE FAIR 
The Elementary  Department  Resource  Class entered  the  Hsinchu  Elementary and Junior High Science Fair on  July Fourth and placed first in both the Math and Chemistry categories. With four other prize-winning experiments, they earned the "Group Award "of the Hsinchu Division. Of these  prize-winning experiments, the  project "Best Comprehensive Examination" , done by students Yu-Shuen Lin and Chung-Dau Huang was awarded 2nd  place in the national competition held from August 25 to 29 in Taitung. Special thanks to teachers Ru-chia Liu and Su -huei Horng for their supervision and inspiration to the students. 

HGH SCHOOL JUNIORS WIN GOLD AND BRONZE 
MEDALS IN SPRINGSOFT SCIENCE COMPETITION
The 2003 Creative Science Competition, sponsored by the Springsoft Education Foundation, held its Nationwide Finals on September 13th,with 17 remaining teams selected from a nationwide total of 70. These teams persevered through regional trials and semifinals, and of these teams our own "C.P.M", comprised of Li-Han Liu and four others, surged forward to claim the gold and a 100,000 NTD award. In addition our other team, led by Yu-ling Shueh, won the bronze award in this national competition. Special thanks to the teachers Mr. Jien-Huei Shi, Ms. Chou-Yueh Lin, and Mr. Jin-Fong Chen. Congratulations, Junior teams!

OPEN INVITATION TO ATTEND SCHOOL FIELD DAY EVENTS ON NOVEMBER 8
The School-wide Field Day will be held on November 7 and 8 this year at the school track.  On Friday, November 7, the students of grade six and below from all departments will participate in many races. On Saturday, November 8, the students from the seventh to twelfth  grades  from  all  the  departments  will  compete  in  numerous  race  and  track events after the opening ceremony. Parents, companies in the science park, and the Science - based Industrial  Park Administration are all invited to send teams and participate in the group relay and the three-legged relay. We hope this will be a happy event for everyone!

NEHS STRING ORCHESTRA PERFORMANCE RINGS WITH FOUR SEASONS
The NEHS string orchestra  performed  at the  National Ching- Hwa University  auditorium on  September 6. Yen-Kai Chen, Chin-
yuen Wang , Jei Li, and Yung-ting Pan played  solo  in Vivaldi's "Four  Seasons,"  and other performers  played  various  melodies 
that   all  received   enthusiastic  applause  from  the   audiences.  Congratulations  to  the  String  Orchestra  for  their  unforgettable performance, and thanks to Ms. Hsin-chuen Tsai for her wonderful guidance.

PETER FAN'S SOLO EXHIBITION: 
"THE TRANSFORMATION OF A 17-YEAR-OLD”
High School Department senior Peter Fan's solo exhibition of oil paintings,"The Transformation of A Seventeen-Year-Old," was displayed in the National Chiao-Tung University Library from September 7 to 30. Sixteen recent oil paintings composed this exhibition, Peter's fourth personal exhibition since the age of 12. From the paintings exhibited, the viewer not only experiences the painter's annoyance, anguish, and melancholy, but also sees the sincerity, perseverance, and humility of the painter. 

COVENANT PLAYERS PERFORM HUMOROUSLY AND PROFOUNDLY
The Bilingual Department invited the Covenant Players to perform for our  elementary and high school students on  October 8. The Covenant  Players  performed " The Real Test" and  three  other  skits  for  some  elementary  students  in  the  morning  and " The Changeover" in the afternoon for some high school level students. The Covenant Players are  a world - touring group of  educators whose  goal  is to  use humorous drama to present to students  a  positive way  of  thinking,  problem  solving, and  living.  Under  their lively performance, students were enthusiastic in volunteering to go up to perform. Their performance was certainly a  success and worth enjoying!                                                        ( English Editors: Linda Huang, John Tsuei, and Issac Yang )
