雙語部陳盼妤榮獲費曼亞洲獎學金

雙語部十二年級陳盼妤同學榮獲美國康乃狄克州韋斯利恩大學 ( Wesleyan University, Connecticut)  所提供的費曼亞洲獎學金,除該校四年全額的學雜及書籍費之外,還包含住宿、每月零用金以及一趟台灣美國往返機票等費用。該獎學金自一九九四年起,每年提供台灣、日本、新加坡及中國大陸等亞洲十一個國家各兩個名額,競爭非常激烈。陳盼妤同學,繼本校2002年畢業生趙宇玄同學,獲此殊榮,真是非常難得
,我們恭賀她,也預祝她未來在大學學習與生活上更上一層樓。

羽球隊表現傑出 獲選為竹市運動會傳遞聖火

本校羽球隊在陳樹華及邱中正兩位教練辛勤指導下,以年度各項比賽的優異表現,獲選為新竹市九十三年度全國中等學校運動會傳遞聖火,負責於四月十四日傳遞台十三線路口至誠仁橋北端之路線。獲選的傳遞聖火羽球隊隊員為:雙語部的江仁和、藍金華、林晴立以及高國中部的周杰、周寧、陳品縈、賴怡俐。在此感謝兩位教練的指導訓練並恭賀以上七位同學代表羽球隊,榮膺重任,為校爭光!

2004年NRC暑期研究名單確定

加拿大國家研究院自1997 年至2002年,連續五年提供本校四位學生名額,於暑假期間到該研究院及渥太華大學進行六週的暑期科學研究。去年此計劃因受 SARS  疫情影響而暫停,今年則由實驗部高一同學莊凡萱、李信宜,以及雙語部高二同學盧卓民、藍金華共四位獲得這項難得的榮譽與機會。在此預祝他們一行成功愉快,收穫豐碩。

第三屆旺宏科學獎 歡迎本校高中生創意參賽

由旺宏電子教育基金會主辦的第三屆旺宏科學獎由三月一日至五月三十一日止,接受全國高中、職在校學生以個人組方式報名並繳交「創意說明書」參賽。旺宏科學獎是為啟發高中生對自然科學及應用科學領域的興趣而規劃,提供高額獎學金鼓勵優秀學生參賽,初賽入圍即獲研究補助金新台幣貳萬元,決賽最高獎項「旺宏獎」得主除講座、證書外,還獲頒大學四年每年新台幣拾貳萬元,共計肆拾捌萬元獎學金;其他獎項得主亦可獲頒大學四年每年新台幣二萬五千元至拾萬元不等之獎學金。本校高中部2003年畢業生張瀚同學即為第一屆旺宏科學獎優等獎得主。主辦單位特別熱忱邀請本校高中生 (含雙語部)熱烈參與,詳細資料請上網查詢: www.mxeduc.org.tw/ScienceAward

「和小說家在高中校園有約」楊照、施叔青蒞校演講

「和小說家在高中校園有約」座談會,是由台積電文教基金會、聯合報副刊、誠品書局聯合為全國各地區高中生舉辦的系列活動。本校很榮幸得以承辦全國第三場新竹地區的座談會。座談會於四月十四日下午二至四時在活動中心進行,由知名作家陳義芝先生主持,邀請兩位著作等身的著名小說家楊照先生及施叔青女士,為校內師生、家長以及社區民眾暢談「好小說與壞小說」。兩位大師博學廣識、妙語如珠
,為實中帶來了濃郁的文學氣息,也給所有聽眾上了一堂最精采深入的「小說課」。

性別平等教育書展系列活動 圓滿成功 

由教育部主辦,本校輔導室承辦,定名為「春天的精神饗宴」性別平等教育書展系列活動於校慶前順利陸續舉辦。書展於三月八日至十九日進行,在圖書館二樓展出共約 200 本關於性別議題的中英文書籍和視聽媒體;其他活動包含由高中部李文蓉及李巾賢老師分別主講共三場「從兒童繪本和文學看兩性議題
」座談會、由陳韻琳女士主講的「愛情」電影賞析和羅月鳳老師為家長們所做的「和爸媽談戀愛」專題演講等。讓本校師生和社區民眾得以對兩性議題有全方位深入的認識。輔導室李沁芬主任特別選輯高、國中部學生逛書展、寫心得的優良作品,分兩期於本刊發表,與大家分享,請見第八頁。

「從文學看人生」讀書會 歡迎報名參加

本校學習型組織「歡喜園丁」舉辦「從文學看人生」讀書會,鼓勵親子共讀世界名著。此讀書會將於四月十七日起至六月五日止,每週六上午九至十二時,在行政大樓第一會議室進行赫塞、張愛玲等中外著名作家生平介紹及其作品的導讀與討論。讀書會帶領人黃士倩老師,為新竹女中退休資深國文教師,長於導讀古今中外文學名著,經驗豐富,其「說書」生動活潑,深度廣度兼具,精采可期。歡迎本校學生

圖書館藝文空間啟用 歡迎全校師生踴躍使用

本校圖書館一樓入口處左方空間在校長指示並全力支援下,由教務處鍾興能主任、圖書館馬祖瑞主任及中學部美術科許佩玫老師精心規劃、交付施工完成後,已成為一處新穎完善的展覽空間。啟用首展即為高三一班學生樊敖宣的油畫展,獲得全校學生、家長及教職員工的熱烈迴響和一致讚賞。接下來,吳校長已邀請到以新竹地區畫家為主要成員的「山水有情畫會」,於四月二十六日至五月七日展出約五十幅水墨山水作品。雙語部蔡淑英老師為參展畫家之一,其作品亦在展出之列。五月十日起則為國小部四年級一班及七班,由鄭秋娟老師指導學生完成的美勞作品展覽。預計此一藝文空間將會為全校帶來熱絡的藝文氣息,也會增進大家與藝術的接觸及欣賞品味。預約展覽檔期,請洽圖書館馬祖瑞主任,校內分機300。

BILINGUAL DEPT STUDENT PAN-YU CHEN WINS 
FREEMAN ASIAN SCHOLARSHIP

Congratulations to Pan-Yu Chen (12A ) who has won the prestigious Freeman Asian Scholarship and admission to Wesleyan University. The Freeman Asian Scholarship at Wesleyan includes full tuition, fees, books, room, board, a monthly stipend and one-time air transportation to and from the United States. This scholarship is given to two ROC students annually and is very competitive. Pan-Yu joins another former alumni, May Chao(Class of 2002), as winners of this award. This is yet another indication of the outstanding students at NEHS. Well done, Pan-Yu.

NEHS BADMINTON TEAM DELIVERS TORCH FOR 
HSINCHU CITY SPORTS COMPETITION 

Under the guidance of coaches Chen Shu-Hua and Chiu Jen-Chung, the badminton team won many awards in last year's competitions and was granted honor to deliver torch on April 14 for the Hsinchu City in the National High School Sports Competition. The NEHS Badminton Team representatives included Cecilia Jiang, Gloria Lan, and Erica Lin of the Bilingual Department and Jessica Jou, Tiffany Jou, Pin-ying Chen, and Yi-li Lai of the High School Department. Congratulations to all these outstanding athletes! 

2004 NRC SUMMER PROGRAM LIST FINALIZED

The Canadian National Research Council has been offering our students very precious six-week summer research opportunities since the year of 1998, with the exception of last year that the plan had to be cancelled due to SARS. Thanks to the continuous support from the Research Council that this program will go on. This year, Experimentals Christine Juang and Hsin-yi Lee and Bilinguals Gloria Lan and Christopher Lo were selected through competition to gain the honor of attending this program. We wish them a successful and rewarding journey.

THIRD MXIC SCIENCE AWARD NOW OPEN FOR 
SIGNING UP

The third MXIC Science Award held by MIXC Education Foundation is open for high school students to sign up and submit individual proposals during March 1 and May 31. The purpose of this competition is to initiate students' interest in natural science and its applications. The awards include NT$25,000 to NT$120,000 each year for four-year college education.   FAMOUS NOVELISTS YANG CHAU AND SHIH 
SHU-CHING GIVE SPEECH AT NEHS 

"A Chat with Novelists at a High School Campus" was a series of conferences held by the Education Foundation of TSMC, United Daily Newspaper, and Eslite Bookstore, for nationwide High School students. NEHS was honored to be the host school in Hsinchu area. The conference was held on April 14 from two to four o'clock in the afternoon at the auditorium. The two esteemed novelists, Mr. Yang Chao and Ms. Shih Shu-ching, first gave a marvelous speech on "Good Novels vs. Bad Novels" to almost one thousand audience and then answered some of the students' questions. It was an afternoon full of wisdom and keen discussion.

GENDER EQUALITY BOOK FAIR:A SUCCESS

With the support from the Ministry of Education, the Guidance Office of NEHS successfully hosted the Educational Gender Equality Book Fair. From March 8 to 19, the school library displayed over 200 Chinese and English books and also held media presentations relevant to the gender equality theme. The book fair has given students, teachers, and the general community a broader and deeper understanding of many equality issues. 

"LOOKING AT LIFE THROUGH LITERATURE" 
WORKSHOP OPEN FOR SIGNING UP

NEHS is hosting a "Looking at Life through Literature" workshop and welcomes students and parents to read and discuss famous selections from world literature. This workshop is in Chinese and lasts from April 17 to June 5, every Saturday morning from nine o'clock to noon. Anyone who is interested in participating may call extension 270 to sign up.

NEW ART GALLERY WELCOMES TEACHERS 
AND STUDENTS TO DISPLAY ARTWORK

Under Principal Wu's instruction and some other administrators' careful thinking and preparation, NEHS now has a brand-new art gallery in the school library. Principal Wu has already invited some local Hsinchu artists, including Bilingual Department teacher Ms. Viola Tsai, to exhibit 50 delicate Chinese paintings from April 26 to May 7. The new art gallery is expected to spread an artistic and cultural awareness to all of the NEHS students and teachers. Students and teachers interested in displaying their artwork are welcome to make a reservation with Mr. Ma Chu-ray, the Dean of the Library, at campus extension 300.
