Last week, the
Lee family went to the countryside to enjoy a ten-day vacation.
During the vacation, the family went to the beach to see the
spectacular view of the sunset. Mark was the youngest child and
was fascinated with the sea. He decided to go to the beach
himself the next morning.
The next morning, Mark went to the beach with his dog. He then
saw a sign warning people not to swim in the sea. But Mark
thought he was so good at swimming that he would never get into
any trouble.
He swam happily in the sea with his dog barking along the shore.
A couple of hours later, the weather became stormy and the sea
level surged so quickly that Mark could not swim back to the
shore. He was stuck on a small rock far off the shore. The dog
then started barking for help.
A rescue team finally reached the beach. They began to rescue
Mark. One of the rescue men jumped into the water, swimming
toward Mark. Eventually, Mark was back to the shore and was
trembling uncontrollably.
Sadly, Mark dare
not go swimming anymore because of fear. He learned the lesson
of survival, but he could not overcome his fear.

It was a sunny
afternoon last Saturday. A boy named Edon was swimming in the
river. He was good at swimming, but he couldn't understand a
sign beside the river. After a few minutes, a white dog started
barking and running toward him. That was Edon's dog, Shine,
which was also Edon's swimming assistant.
Why was Shine barking? Not because Edon was in danger, but
because the dog found someone else drowning. A crowd of people
gathered by the river bank. Everyone was curious about what was
happening. "A man is drowning!” Everybody then screamed with
panic. Someone even called 119! The dog threw a colorful
lifebuoy to Edon before the ambulance arrived, and he saved the
boy! All the people then gave him a big hand.
However, a person who dressed just like the drowning man said to
Edon angrily, “Hey, boy. My partner wasn’t drowning. He was
trying to save you. We thought YOU were drowning. Don’t you EVER
swim in this river again! You are not supposed to do that
anymore!” Edon stood there feeling embarrassed, not knowing what
to say.

Michael was a
teenager who liked to exercise every day, especially swimming in
the sea. Last week, Michael went swimming with his dog as usual.
Michael happily swam in the sea although there was a “No
swimming” sign nearby. He ignored the sign. He only thought that
he swam much better than any other students in his class, and
that he wouldn't get into any trouble. But things didn't go
right on that day. The tide came in silently, and Michael didn't
notice it at all.
As it was about time for Michael to go home, he was really
tired. However, his feet couldn’t reach the bottom of the sea.
All he could do was to stand on a higher rock off the shore. The
tide didn’t seem to go soon. His dog had no idea about his
master but kept barking on the shore.
Fortunately, the noisy barking was noticed by a passer-by. He
kindly called the police to help Michael. The police came soon.
A rescue team tried to reach Michael with a lifebuoy.
Eventually, Michael was rescued. Michael was too tired to say
any words except shivering with cold. He could only smile to the
rescue team.
After this terrifying lesson, Michael promised that he would not
do anything violating the law. Now he still exercises every day,
but he jogs “on the road." And, of course, he always goes
jogging with his faithful dog.

It was a sunny
and windy day. In the afternoon, there were so many children
coming to my house to have some fun. So, I decided to tell them
an interesting story about my last Halloween.
I was going to buy more candy for the children who would never
be satisfied with what they got. While walking down the street,
I was suddenly shocked by a flash light. And then, in less than
a second, a big fire ball fell from the eastern sky with a
terribly loud noise. It sent out some strange smell. I thought
that was a meteoric stone, but later I found that I was wrong. A
creature came in sight. It was about one and a half meters tall
and . . . and it looked very much like a dog. Oh! My Goodness! I
was so terrified that I couldn’t move or even say a word.
I wanted to run and call the police, but my mind was just like
being controlled. The alien then went on to knock on Robber’s
door. No way! It COULD NOT abduct my best friend. I was so
angry, but my legs still could not move. To my surprise, Robber
just thought HE was another kid to ask for candy and gave him a
lollipop. HE left disappointedly, just like most children around
the neighborhood.
Then, I found that I was wrong thinking of him as a bad
creature. Maybe he just needed a hand to fix his spacecraft. As
I thought of this, my body finally came back to my control. I
walked to him and said, “Do you need any help?" He quickly
smiled at me and uttered, “Bowwow~, Bowwow~.” I helped him fix
his aircraft and watched him fly away into the east sky.
“That was an unforgettable memory in my life,” I told the kids.
“If you guys see any friends from the outer space next time,
don’t think they are bad guys at first. They might just need
some help, OK?” A human-being girl, a dog-headed boy, and two
frog-legged twin girls smiled at one another and said loudly,
"Of course, we are good friends!"

On a starless
night, an alien was flying a spacecraft silently. Suddenly, the
spacecraft was hit by a swarm of melting meteor storm and began
to shake fiercely. With a big crashing sound, the spacecraft
lost its controlling power and then plunged onto an unknown
planet.
The alien on the
ship felt everything dancing. All he could do was to use the
rest of the power to land as safely as possible. The planet
which he landed was called “the Earth.” After the spacecraft
landed, it tumbled down into pieces. The alien had no way to go
back and had to seek help from the local residents to find a way
home.
The alien got out
from the heated iron of his broken craft, and wore an emergency
suit to prevent the local atmosphere from intoxicating his
health.
The alien started
to walk aimlessly, hoping to find the right creature to help
him. As time passed by, he was getting tired and sleepy due to
lack of regular meals. What kept him going was his strong iron
will.
Finally, he found a small town in the immense desert. The closer
he approached the town, the brighter his hope grew. At last, he
walked toward a house in the town and knocked on the door.
When the door was
open, a man showed up. Before the alien could say anything, the
host of the house grabbed a bag of lollipops and shouted, “Happy
Halloween!” The alien was too surprised to say anything.
“Wow, I can get a
lot of lollipops without paying anything!” the alien talked to
himself. With a bag of lollipops in his hand, the alien decided
to stay at this planet because he could live on this planet
without paying anything.
As the alien
walked away, the man stood at the door with his mouth open. He
whispered to himself, “I haven’t seen any alien costumes so real
before!”

With a loud bang,
a weird spacecraft crashed onto a farmland. While black smoke
kept steaming out, a small figure crawled out. He stood up, and
looked quite confused. It was an alien, not much taller than a
10-year-old kid. There was a name card on its chest, which was
"CV-O8T". The alien, looking depressed, stared at the broken
spacecraft for a while, and decided to look for help.
It hurried to the nearest house, and knocked at the door. The
person who answered the door was an unfriendly big guy, wearing
no smiles on his grumpy face. Before CV-O8T could say anything,
the man handed it a lemon-flavored lollipop and sent it away.
CV-O8T was pushed out to the front steps and the door closed
behind it with a loud slam.
Utterly confused,
CV-O8T walked away with the lollipop, hoping that it could be
some kind of fixing tool. Two kids rushed by CV-O8T with strange
costumes, both carrying a pumpkin-shaped basket. They knocked on
the man's door in the same way as the alien did. When the door
opened, they shouted "trick-or-treat" merrily. CV-O8T didn't
understand what they said but it didn't bother to ask. Worried
and frustrated, the alien hurried back to the spot where its
spaceship lay half destroyed.
Actually, the man was no child-lover but a mad scientist who
hated kids. He worked for the military to invent weapons. What
he gave CV-O8T and the two boys were not real sweets, but
mini-sized bombs wrapped in colorful candy paper. After giving
out candy to the two innocent children, he slammed the door
right in front of them with a nasty grin.
CV-O8T stood in front of the wreckage, getting more and more
confused. It didn't know how to use a lollipop to fix a
spaceship, but decided to give it a try. It tapped the steaming
UFO lightly but nothing happened. Then CV-O8T tapped it again
much harder. Before it could scream out an SOS message, the
lollipop exploded. Everything turned into ashes.
Far away from the
farmland, the two kids noticed the lights and sounds caused by
the explosion and thought that it must be some kind of fireworks
display. However, when they ran excitedly to the spot, what they
saw frightened them, and they dropped their pumpkin baskets.
Boom!! The candy in the baskets exploded as well.
The next morning, the farmer who owned the farmland noticed
something strange in the middle of the crops. There were crop
circles. And when everyone in the neighborhood came, the mad
scientist merely smirked.

It was a
beautiful weekend. Mr. Jones was driving along the foggy
mountain road with his wife and three children, Steven, Joan and
Benny. The mountain road was not unfamiliar to the kids. It was
the way to the house once belonged to their grandparents.
The house sat in the quiet mountain forest where the scenery
changed with season. Which season did they like best? The answer
would definitely be autumn. "You can see all the trees in the
forest turn yellow and red, and the view in front of you is so
fascinating that you would hold your breath," Steven once
described in his essay.
For the kids, the backyard of the house was just like heaven.
They played hide-and-seek, chatted and even read books under the
tree. But during autumn, they had one more thing to do - raking
the leaves. Raking the leaves might be such a boring chore for
any other kids, but not for the Jones.
Actually they did
not even regard it as a chore that most of the kids refused to
do. Smelling the leaves, feeling the breeze blowing gently and
taking a deep breath of the refreshing air in the mountains were
all what they enjoyed. Steven raked the fallen leaves. Joan
collected them in a bamboo basket. Benny was still young and
sometimes messed it up, but his brother and sister would never
be angry at him. Now that the leaves were messed up, they might
as well lie on them and watch the clouds floating in the clear
blue sky and enjoy their leisure time.
The Jones found happiness in the nature. The house in the forest
was not only a place once their grandparents owned, but also
where the whole family shared sweet memories.

Lunar August 15th
is a special day for the Chinese. It's the Moon Festival! People
usually spend time with their families. They eat moon cakes and
pomelos, and admire the bright full moon together.
Years ago when I was just a little girl, dad and I were sitting
on the top of the roof. I watched the moon and listened to dad's
stories about the festival he had experienced when he was young.
He told me that he always had to clean the leaves around their
house with his brother and sisters in fall and winter. They
piled up the leaves to a child's height. Dad liked to hide
beneath the leaves and no one could find him.
Once, a typhoon came before the Moon Festival. Strong winds blew
the leaves and dirt all over the ground. Everything was a mess.
Grandpa didn't want their house to look terrible on that special
day, so he sent dad and my uncle to clean up all the mess
outside the house. Dad and my uncle had a fight over the
distribution of the workload, but they had to do it anyway. When
dad finished most of the hard work, he hid himself under the
leaves again. Noticing that his little brother has gone, my
uncle did not bother to look for him. He thought that his
brother would appear for supper anyway.
The night came,
and dad did not show up. Everyone started to worry. Then dinner
was ready. Grandpa asked everyone to look for my dad. An hour or
so later, they finally found my dad. To everyone's relief, my
dad did not get hurt or anything. He just fell asleep with the
leaves upon him. He even had a good dream.
It is Moon Festival tonight. Recalling the great moments we had
together, I am really thankful for the precious memories with
dad. Now, he is working in China. Yet, even though we are in
different countries, we can still look at the same moon tonight.

Mike and Debbie
were busy art school students. Tonight they had to finish their
sculpture painting and hand it in the next morning.
“Hey Debbie, I finished my painting. How about you?" Mike asked
with a big smile.
“Not yet. I
haven’t even finished my draft. This sculpture is too difficult
for me. I have no idea what to do," Debbie answered impatiently.
She had started working on it since morning and now it was ten
at night.
“Be patient. When
I have no inspiration, I will try to talk with the sculpture,”
Mark suggested.
"Talk with it? It
sounds really funny. Are you making a joke at me?” Upset and
frustrated, Debbie just wanted to finish it as soon as possible
and go home.
“That is sound
advice. Take it or leave it. I have to go,” Mike knew he should
stay and give her a big hand, but it was getting really late.
After Mike left, Debbie stayed alone in the room. Outside the
window, nothing could be seen. The night was so quiet that only
the scratching sounds from Debbie’s brushes could be heard.
“Why are you
working so hard?” Debbie said to herself although she knew it
was stupid. She had no choice but to try Mike’s advice. “Will
you give me inspiration? I will be very thankful if you do.”
“All right. What
can I do for you?” A faint voice uttered.
“Who is it?”
Debbie shouted loudly in fear.
“It is me. I am
the poor sculpture,” the voice continued.
“You can’t talk,
can you?” asked Debbie. Debbie thought she must have been too
tired. “That was impossible.”
“Of course, I can
talk. When somebody complains about me, I would talk. I think
the problem is not about me. It is you,” said the sculpture.
Debbie was too shocked to answer anything.
“I am a handsome
sculpture. Don’t you think? ... Hey, answer me. Answer my
question,” the sculpture seemed to become angry. Its voice
became louder and louder.
“Answer my question, Debbie. Why are you sleeping here? It is
morning," the art teacher asked. “What? Teacher? What time is
it? Oh I haven’t finished the painting. I am so sorry,” Debbie
explained. Even though she tried very hard, Debbie could not
finish her painting.
“No. You did very
well. This is the most handsome sculpture painting I have ever
seen. Great job!” said the Art teacher.
”Really! Thanks. But...,” Debbie was confused. She thought to
herself, “Is that a dream?” Suddenly, Debbie discovered one
thing. Her paintbrush was next to the sculpture and she saw a
satisfied smile on the sculpture.
