The fact that out of the 78,560 AMC12 competitors worldwide only 11 received full marks makes Mark’s achievement quite an honor. ELEMENTARY TEAM WINS GLORY AT TAIWAN INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN’S TV AND FILM FESTIVAL III

The 2008 3rd annual Taiwan International Children’s TV and Film Festival welcomed 365 films from 41 counties worldwide and awarded only 8. The Elementary Team, lead by teacher Mr. Chu Chi-ching, entered the category of “Big Dreams of Little Director” with a documentary titled “Let’s go dancing” and brought home the Children’s Jury Award. The film was shot by a student team whose members were Lu Tzong-min, Sun Cheng-yuan and Wang Hsien-chen. The six-month-long filming documented the process of four girls (Sun Cheng-fung, Tang De-yi, Kao Yi-jing and Chen Ling-hsuan) who devoted half a year pursuing a dancing dream and touched the young jurors’ hearts. The “big dream” of the “little directors” came true, and they have both a film and an award to prove it (see p.5 for details). Mr. Chu’s film-making talents also helped NEHS in making an introductory film for the High-School-based Regional Education Project. Many thanks to Mr. Chu for his overall contribution to NEHS.

BILINGUAL STUDENT DELEGATES SHINE AT TAIMUN VI 2008

The Sixth Annual Taiwan Model United Nations Conference (TAIMUN VI) was held at the American School in Taichung on April 17 and 18. NEHS and seven other high schools participated in the conference. Issues discussed included the admission of Taiwan to the UN, the provisions of the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty and the human rights issues in Myanmar. At the end of the two-day conference, 8 out of the 240 student delegates were honored with the title of “Best Delegates”. It is NEHS’s honor to boast that 5 of the 8 best delegates were from the NEHS Bilingual Department. We applaud Mark Chen, Li Chu, Tammy Hsu, Kenneth Jeng and Teresa Lou for their hard work, and Ms. Wyant, Ms. Nancy Wang and fellow teachers for their teaching and assistance. Such a unique experience is a sound promise of a better tomorrow for the world.

ELEMENTARY DEPARTMENT HOSTS DANCING COMPETITION

The 9th annual “Dance Showdown” of the Elementary Department took place on March 21 in the Gym. There were 34 teams competing; each one of the self-organized teams practiced during quiet-time and after school. Through dancing, the students built team spirit and self-confidence, and thus experienced a great sense of accomplishment. Principal Wu’s participation in the dance, Ms. Peng’s humorous role as the MC, parents’ support in costume and makeup, and Ms. Wang’s lovely stage decoration were the magical elements that gave the Elementary students and teachers a wonderful Friday afternoon.
