Europe and the United States on the mission of presenting
Chinese folk sports to the world. During their visit here at

breath-taking Chinese Yo-yo and shuttlecock performance and left
the audience in awe. Following the show they gave instructions
and demonstration of the Yo-yo skills to the exciting 4th
grade classes, then toured the campus. Thanks to PE teacher Ms.
Wang Yu-jen who helped arrange their visit. We look forward to
more of such meaningful interschool activities in the future.

ENVIRONMENTAL
ACTIONS TAKEN ON EARTH DAY
April 22nd
this year was the 40th Earth Day. Students of the
Junior and Senior High Departments and IBSH joined in on this
grand event with the 180 nations, 17000 international
organizations involved and contributed their efforts in cleaning
the environment. Earth Day is a day designed to inspire
awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment. It was
founded on April 22nd, 1970 and was taken
international in 1990 with organized events in 141 nations. This
year at NEHS, our environmental awareness is marked by the
efforts of the students of H2-4, H1-1 and J2-5 who devoted their
time to the cleaning of the Nan-Liao Beach on April 17th,
and by the IBSH students of 1st through 6th
grades who spent an entire hour cleaning up the campus in hot
sun. From elementary to high school, students’ actions towards a
better environment are well-recognized, and we hope to see more
people show support and get involved in local Earth Day events,
not just on Earth Day but everyday.
THE 25TH HIGH SCHOOL
SENIOR’S OIL REPLICA EXHIBITION OPENS
The 25th High School
Seniors’ Oil Replica Exhibition took place in two sessions. The
first session was held from April 21st to 25th
at the Hsinchu Culture Affairs Bureau, second session was
between April 30th and May 12th at the
Ming-guan Art Gallery in Ju-dong Township. Without much previous
art experience due to the heavy academic pressure, these High
School Department students in their junior year bravely took on
the challenge of imitating the masterpieces of renowned artists,
waving their paint brushes at the monstrous canvas into late
nights, weekends and holidays as the tormenting mission of
completing an oil-painting single-handed became a soul-cleansing
experience in reflection, and the completion the ultimate
redemption. Like the phoenix that rose from the ashes, they
found themselves soaring into a new height, with an oil-painting
to prove it. Thanks to Hsinchu Culture Affairs Bureau for
providing the facility for the exhibition, the PTA for great
support, Ms. Hsu for her dedicated teaching and the students for
their hard work. (See p.3-6 for details)
TEACHER-PARENT
WORKSHOPS ENJOY CLASSIC LITERATURE
The Guidance Office
hosts 12 workshops titled “Light Readings on the Classics” this
semester for teachers and parents of the community. Ms.
ChenYun-lin, a well-read writer and radio show host, once again
led the readers onto a joy ride through novels and stories of
the classic. From the Golden Bowl to the Great Gatsby, from
Virginia Woolf to Marguerite Duras, participants enjoyed the
classic literature through readings, movies and group
discussions, and increased their awareness of gender-equality
and the meanings of life. The workshops began on March 10th,
and the final meeting on June 2nd will bring this semester's
events to a closure with a highly moving film titled “My
Sister’s Keeper”, ending this enchanting journey on a high note.
Both workshops this school year were funded in part by an
anonymous patron. The participants paid for the rest of the
expense. Many thanks to all for the financial support and
enthusiastic participation.
