The STEP Winter Camp has returned with a 3-day educational event held in collaboration with Luzhu
Elementary School after a 2 year hiatus. This time around, the theme of the camp was "Home and Beyond,"
prompting students to consider the various definitions of "home" and providing them with the English
vocabulary to describe their ideas. The camp was split into two classes—grades 1 to 3 and grades 3 to 6—
each offering a variety of games, crafts, and experiments.
During the event, students learned about everything from electrical currents to the differences between
pets & pests. Our volunteers helped design and facilitate activities that combined learning with fun. Our
students were able to make their own dreamcatchers and dream jars, experiment with batteries and circuits,
and even sketch blueprint layouts from scratch. On the final day, students were led through a campus wide
scavenger hunt, completing obstacle after obstacle to reach the event's grand finale: Capture the Flag.
While our members worked tirelessly during the day, the afternoon was always a well deserved break.
Whether it was quiet preparation in the early morning, team naps after lunch, or heated arguments during
rounds of Mafia, STEP Winter Camp volunteers have undoubtedly formed a sense of camaraderie in their
time together. Even if many of us started as strangers, we concluded the trip with a new community built on
laughter and hard work.
Over the course of 3 months of careful lesson planning, scheduling, and interschool communication,
IBSH volunteers have put to use their multilingual and interdisciplinary backgrounds to create unique learning
opportunities for local Taiwanese students. Ultimately, STEP was able to build a platform for elementary
students to not only build confidence in using a second language, but also explore beyond classroom emphasis
on grammatical rules.
