本校視訊會議室裝設完成
五月二十二日越洋會議啟用
高一四班全體學生將於五月二十二日上午在第一會議室,啟用本校新進添購、可進行四方同時會談的視訊攝影器材,與美國加州 Blair
High
School的學生進行視訊會議,針對「全球化」議題進行面對面的英語對談討論。這是本校高中部學生連續第三年參與由Blair
High
School 國際交流計劃小組主導之跨國高中生交流活動
。每年有一班高中部學生參加此計畫,與美國、芬蘭、奧地利、日本、中國等國參與此交流計劃的高中生,首先共同選定討論議題,接著,各自分組準備英文相關資料,在課堂上進行討論、整理,再經由網路與國外夥伴進行小組對談,最後
,藉由視訊會談進行最後階段面對面的英語交流討論及總結。每年參與的學生們都很用心地準備練習,也都從中得到很大的樂趣和收穫 !

雙語部羽球隊
參加新竹市羽球賽 連奪三冠
由新竹市政府主辦的主委盃羽球賽於四月十九、二十日在大庄國小舉行。本校雙語部羽球隊在教練們的指導下勤練多時,果然在賽場中威風凜凜,無可匹敵,分別奪得高中女子組、國中女子組及國中男子組冠軍
。特此感謝陳樹華、鄭富仁、邱中正、林士元、徐慶錚老師們的優異指導以及全體隊員的勤奮努力,為校爭光!
高中部劉玲秀老師
當選第一屆新竹市Super教師
全國教師會為發掘並鼓勵基層優良教師,從今年起將每年舉辦 Super 教師遴選活動。新竹市教師會特別成立遴選委員會,於三月底前接受各校推薦,並於五月中完成實地訪視調查,最後選出高中職、國中、小學
、及幼稚園四組 Super 教師各一名。本校高中部劉玲秀老師
以其“勇於嘗試生活化的教材,豐富了學生體驗自然的生命 ”當選第一屆新竹市高中組 Super
教師,獲頒獎牌,並進入全國遴選。劉老師深耕多年,實至名歸,特此恭賀!
高中部陳哲聿、羅元隆 全國力學競賽榮獲銀牌
為推廣及促進力學科學之普及教育並發掘相關力學優秀人才,中華民國力學學會特別舉辦2003全國中學生力學競賽。此競賽於二月十五日在台北、高雄、台中、新竹四地區分別舉辦初賽,共有六百零八位各校菁英參加。初賽入選的二百人,於三月一日在台北市國立台灣大學參加決賽,最後選出十位金牌、二十位銀牌及五十位銅牌得主。本校高三二班陳哲聿及高一四班羅元隆同學,表現優異,榮獲銀牌。在此恭賀這兩位學生的傑出表現,也謝謝陳元彰老師的辛勤指導!
國小部五年級英語說故事比賽 流暢生動
國小部英語科教師為提昇學生學習興趣,特於四月二十五日上午在活動中心舉辦五年級學生英語說故事比賽。每班初選優勝的三位代表,共二十一位參賽學生,在兩位英文教師洪瑩容老師及 Ms.
Lorrie
Patterson 的辛勤指導下,以流利清晰的英語,生動的肢體語言,娓娓述說著有趣的英語故事,在場的師生都聽得興味盎然,不住讚賞。此次比賽競爭激烈,最後由五年五班鄭喬允奪得冠軍,二至六名得獎學生依次為黃秋萱、徐皓哲、許青揚、莊昀及王嘉澍。
南科管理局吳盟分副局長 蒞校訪問
為規劃成立南科雙語中小學並參考本校雙語部的成功經驗,南部科學園區管理局吳盟分副局長偕同南科國中小籌備處人員一行八人,於四月二十二日上午蒞臨本校雙語部訪問。當日除參觀雙語部環境及教學外,討論議題還包含雙語部教學、設備、吸取建校經驗以及外籍教師聘僱方式等。戴校長、雙語部教學組黃芳芷組長及訓育組金仁初組長,竭誠招待並深入分享實中的經驗。

NEHS ADMISSION DATES RESCHEDULED
Due to the SARS epidemic, the Ministry of Education has rescheduled the date for the Junior High School Basic
Achievement Test. For details, see page 16. In accordance with
the change of schedule, the school has rescheduled the deadlines for applying to the High School Department. The new
due date for application is July 4 and the new testing date
for Gifted Math and Science Program is July 8. If there are
further changes of date on the part of the Ministry of
Education, the school will reschedule accordingly. For recent updates , check in on the NEHS website at
www.nehs.hc.edu.tw.

TELECONFERENCE TO BE HELD ON MAY 22
A class of High School students will attend a video
teleconference on the morning of May 22 in the First
Conference Room, using the newly purchased
audiovisual facilities. They will address the issue of globalization in a
discussion with students from other high schools. This is the third year students of the High School Department have
participated in the global collaboration hosted by Blair High
School of Pasadena, CA. Each year, participants spend a great
deal of effort preparing and rehearsing for the
teleconference, learning a great deal in the process. We would
like to thank English teacher Chiwen Chien for her instruction and the Computer Center staff for their assistance.
BILINGUAL BADMINTON TEAM WINS THREE
TITLES IN HSINCHU COMPETITION
The Bilingual Department Badminton team won first place in the
high school girls, middle school girls, and middle school boys
categories in the city badminton competition on April 19th and
20th at Da-Chuang Elementary School. The school thanks
teachers Shu-Hua Chen, Fu-Ren Cheng, Chung - Jeng Chiu, Shi - Yuan Lin, and Cheing Cheung Shu for their outstanding instruction
and congratulates the students on their excellent results.
MS. LIN-SHIOW LIU WINS FIRST ANNUAL
SUPER
TEACHER AWARD OF THE HSINCHU CITY
In order to discover and encourage excellent teachers, the National Teachers ' Association has established the Super
Teacher Award. The Hsinchu Teachers' Association formed a
selection committee, accepting nominations from schools at the
end of March and completing classroom evaluations by mid-May.
Ms. Lin- Shiow Liu, the High School Department geography teacher, has been announced winner of the first annual Super
Teacher Award of the Hsinchu Area and will go on to complete
nationally. Being a well- loved teacher for many years, Ms. Liu
is recognized by the committee for " enriching students ' learning experiences with creative teaching approaches."
Congratulations to Ms. Liu!
HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS JER-YU CHEN AND
YUAN-LUN LUO WIN SILVER MEDALS IN
NATIONAL MECHANICS COMPETITION
The Republic of China's Society of Mechanics recently held the 2003 National High School Mechanics Competition. Preliminaries proceeded at four separate testing sites in Taipei, Kaoshiung, Taichung, and Hsinchu on February 25. Out of 608 competitors, 200 were chosen to compete in the finals at the National Taiwan University on March 1. Ten gold, twenty silver, and fifty bronze medallists were chosen. NEHS students Jer-Yu Chen of H 3-2 and Yuan-Lun Luo of H 1-4 received silver medals for
their excellent performance. Congratulations to them, and
thanks to physics teacher Yuan- Chang Chen for his instruction.
ELEMENTARY DEPARTMENT FIFTH GRADE
ENGLISH STORYTELLING CONTEST: EXCITING
Elementary Department English teachers held an English storytelling contest on April 25 in the gym for the fifth
graders in hope of encouraging interest in English among
students. Each class chose three winning candidates for a
total of twenty- one contestants. Under the instruction of Ms. Caroly Horng and Ms. Lorrie Patterson, students enraptured the
audience with their fluent English, engaging performances, and interesting stories. Competition was fierce, with Michael
Cheng of class five winning first place.

SCIENCE PARK ADMISITRATION VISITS NEHS
Deputy Director General Mung - Fin Wu of the Tainan
Science - Based Industrial Park Administration and seven members from the Nan-Ke Elementary and High School committees visited the Bilingual Department April 22. The Tainan Science Park is planning to establish bilingual classes within the Nan- Ke
Elementary and High Schools, a nd they hope to use the NEHS
Bilingual Department as a model. Principal Tai, Academic Affairs Coordinator Ms. Christine Huang, and Student Affairs Coordinator Mr. Ray Chin received the guests. Besides taking the guests on a tour of the Bilingual Department's classrooms
and surroundings, they also shared experience on teaching
methods, facilities, and foreign teacher recruitment.
