First Hsinchu High School Model United
Nations Conference
Took Place at NEHS
The first Hsinchu High School Model United Nations
Conference took place on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2005 at the first
conference room of NEHS. Twenty-eight students from the four
participating local high schools (Hsinchu Girls’ Senior High
School, Chien-Kung Senior High School, Hsinchu Commercial
Vocational High School and NEHS) acted as the delegates
representing the twenty-eight nations at the environmental
committee of the United Nations Environmental Programme at the
conference. The conference commenced at 8:30, after the
opening speeches the lobbying amongst the delegates went into
serious action, the debate on the final resolutions and voting
took place after lunch. The zealousness of the delegates
carried on beyond the originally scheduled closing time, and
the conference did not conclude until around 5:30. Such an
unprecedented event required immense amount of time and
effort, and we are grateful to all the people that helped make
it happen. We wish to see this event to be carried on into a
tradition, and the future youngsters can also benefit from
this precious experience for years to come (see p.8 for
details).
Elementary Students Shared A Month Of Thankfulness
A series of activities to nurture
thankfulness took place at the Elementary Department
throughout December, 2005. The sharing of stories of
thankfulness preceded the many activities such as the
decoration of the tree of thankfulness, the singing of songs
of gratitude and the making of thankful cards. On the morning
of December 23, 2005, a grand gathering in the Gym presented
programs from all elementary classes and the students enjoyed
a great play on the theme of thankfulness. A wonderful book, I
am my parents’ camera, was recommended for the youngsters to
read. A writing competition is being held to encourage reading
of the story and sharing of the feedback (entries accepted
from December 30, 2005 to January 13, 2006). Students of the
Elementary Department enjoyed a very meaningful holiday season
together.
Kindergarten Students And Teachers
Enjoyed A Wonderful Christmas Gathering
TThe students, teachers and friends of the Kindergarten
Department enjoyed a wonderful Christmas gathering in the
morning of December 23, 2005 in the gym. “The Gingerbread Man”
play, along with the jolly Christmas songs, brought on the
Christmas spirit that permeated the entire gym. The highlight
of the program was, of course, when Santa Clause visited with
bags of candy. Principal Wu joined in on the Christmas fun and
wished the little ones a very merry Christmas.
Junior High 7th Graders Enchanted Kindergarteners
With Stories Galore
The Kindergarten students had two
feasts of stories on December 28, 2005 and January 4, thanks
to the 7th graders of the High School Department. Students of
Ms. Ei-ling Chang’s English class were divided into 6 groups,
one for each kindergarten class, and spent one hour each time
telling stories to the little kindergarteners. To the little
ones, it was a moment of enchantment; to the 7th grade big
brothers and sisters, it was an opportunity to polish their
English verbal skills and a moment of realization of their
responsibility to be a good role model.
Video Conference Connected Students
From Bilingual Department And The Tainan First High School
A video conference that took
place on January 3 at the first conference room connected
students miles away. Bilingual students in Mr. Lamirand’s
class in Hsinchu and students from the Tainan First High
School in southern Taiwan in Mr. Chiang’s class enjoyed a
lively and enthusiastic discussion through video connection on
the topic of “searching for happiness inside”. Following the
lead-in of the article discussing happiness in the March 2005
issue of the Time Express magazine, students shared their
personal experience on ways of finding happiness. Through the
hour-long discussion they facilitated friendship and bonding
between the student body of NEHS and the Tainan First High
School. What a fascinating and positive cyber-space
experience.
Workshops Enriched Lives Of Teachers From
The Local Community
Two informative teachers’ in-service workshops were held in
December, 2005 for teachers in the local community. On
Wednesday, December 1, the workshop for English language arts
teachers titled “Poetry into classroom”, and lectured by
Professor Ying- Hsiung Chou from the Chiao-Tung University,
explored the concept and practicability of integrating English
poetry into classroom teaching. On Sunday, December 18, the
social studies workshop invited Mr. Wu, the warden of Tao-yuan
Prison and also the instructor at the Center of General
Education at Chiao-Tung University, to give a lecture on “The
complexities between globalization, regionalization of the
European Union and postmodernism.” This series of workshops
provided a ready access to opportunities for self-improvement
and were welcomed enthusiastically by the neighboring teachers
of the community.
