Fifth Annual Thimun-Singapore Conference
THIMUN Singapore held its fifth annual
conference at the Hwa Chong Institution campus from the 17th
through 22nd of November, 2009. A total of 77 schools and over
1200 delegates contributed to the grand event this year. The
theme, "Limits to Growth—The need for Sustainable Development",
warranted the creation of the Commission of Sustainable
Developments (CSD), which discussed plausible international
policies in achieving sustainable development. IBSH teacher Ms.
Janice Rossing led the press team, and Ms. Elizabeth Wyant
served as the director for the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
For those who prepare and actively participate, MUN conferences
are great steps to making a better future community. Let us join
hands and contribute our efforts in creating a brighter tomorrow
for us all.
NEHS Writers Bring Home Literature Award
The 2009 Hsinchu Literature Award ceremony
was hosted in the Performing Arts Center on the 12th. Instructed
by teacher Jin Shian Lee, three students from the High School
department, Da Bang Wang, Yan Tzi Lai, and Yan Ting Cheng,
brought back glory and honor. In the children’s sector,
Elementary department student Chong Hao Zhao, instructed by Ms.
Yu Chi Lai, also brought home the “Outstanding Work?award. Along
with monetary awards provided by the Hsinchu government,
delicate glass trophies were also especially designed to award
winners. This year’s competition generated 754 articles, and the
34 winning articles were combined and published. Congratulations
to all the participants, and let’s hope next year’s competition
will be an even greater success!
Physics Classes Race Boats Against Strong Wind
The second year of the High School physics
creative activity—the boat racing contest?took place on November
18th at the NEHS swimming pool. After intense competition, H2-4
team’s boat won the prize for the farthest distance traveled,
while H1-4 team’s won at the fastest speed category. This
boat-racing activity was founded by two physics teachers, Mr.
Jin Feng Chen and Mr. Yuan Jang Chen. The purpose was to
cultivate team spirit, creativity and problem-solving skills
through a hands-on project competition. Students combined theory
and practice and made boats that went against great winds, while
in the meantime their creativity and passion for learning also
took wings. (reported by Tie Ding from the High School R&D
section)
2009 Regional High School Homogenizing Project
The first semester of the 2009 Regional High
School Homogenizing Project has come to a great end. The focuses
this year were Art Appreciation and Life Education. Five
subprojects took place this semester: eight fascinating lectures
under the topic of “Reading the Classics, Reading Life? a
successful UNICEF fundraiser which raised over 260,000 NT to
help the needy local and abroad, two informative
service-learning workshops introducing its concept and praxis, a
joint moodle workshop that shared NEHS?technological advantages
with the neighboring She-Jieh High School, and an exciting
geographical on-site subproject that took the students exploring
in Jin-shan and Ye-liu. This semester has been a great success,
and we look forward to more excitements in the project next
semester.
Elementary Teachers Present Expertise At
Workshop
In order to encourage sharing and learning
among fellow teachers, the Elementary department hosted an “Expertise
Showcase?on December 9th. Participating teachers shared their
specialties. Music teachers demonstrated a game of music poker,
Science teachers shared creativity applicable to daily life,
math teachers introduced several interesting math games, and
language arts teachers shared a lesson of “script-writing? The
grand finale was the PE and Health teachers?“Chinese Yoyo?lesson
where everyone was “tossing and learning?at the same time.
Workshops of this kind help teachers connect with one another
beyond the classroom boundary and enhance the teaching quality
of all. Best of all, it’s even Fun!! (Reported by Elementary
teacher Ms. Jen-ru Huang)
Science Class Lectures Captivate Students
For the newly-established Science class this
school year, the High School department invited professors from
the biology, chemistry, and physics department of Tsing Hua
University for a series of lectures and experiments.
Furthermore, in order that the students would have an
opportunity to explore in different realms of interest,
Professor Chih Nung Hsu, Yung Ping Chen, Nan Ji Chang, and NEHS
high school teacher Mei Fen Ding gave lectures on topics ranging
from math, technology, literature to biomedicine. With the great
variety in topics and fields, the Science class lectures aimed
to provide students with more interesting learning and a greater
horizon in knowledge pursuit.
