Elementary Department After-school Tutor Program: A Success!

The Elementary Department led the “After School Tutor Program?from this winter break from 1/21 to 1/27. By maximizing school resrouces, our teachers were able to tutor disadvantaged students and to help them lay good academic foundations. This program was guided by the Ministry of Education, hosted by the Hsinchu City government, and coordinated by our elementary department, who not only created student profiles and the resource bank, but also designed the curriculum for the program. The five weekdays were dedicated to courses in Chinese, English, math, reading and writing. After a successful winter session which ended on the 27th, teachers have decided to expand the scope of this project during this coming summer by opening two classes and extending the program from one week to four weeks (eighty periods). We thank all the teachers who contributed to this program, and we hope that their acts of kindness can inspire more love and care all around.

Library Hosts ¡§Play With Lines¡¨ Workshop in Taipei

Our school library hosted a “Play With Lines?teacher workshop in Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School on January 25th to help teachers incorporate the art into their curriculum. “Play with Lines?is the 2010 topic of the annual circulating art exhibition hosted by the Quanta Culture and Education Foundation. It consists of art work of four different categories: types of lines, expressions of lines, the texture of lines, and dancing lines. Through these creations, artists hope to inspire children’s imagination and help them feel the many facets of art. “Play With Lines?will be exhibited in our very own library from 3/15 till 3/30, during which a series of relevant activities will also take place. We encourage everyone to participate.

Bilingual Students Build Houses for Cebu

Lead by Mr. Eric Swan, Ms. Elizabeth Wyant, Mr. Travis Clemens, Mr. Nathan Bryant, and Mr. Steven Huang, twenty five bilingual department juniors flew to Cebu on January 24th to help the locals rebuild their homes. This weeklong volunteer service was a response to the Gawad Kalinga calling for people to eradicate poverty and rebuild homeland for those who are desperately in need. For a week, our students and teachers labored through the process of building houses from scratch, laying bricks and making sturdy walls, all under the blazing heat of the Philippines sunshine. Though our team was often found covered in dirt and was unable to finish the entire project due to time constraints, their content smiles reflected the satisfaction of knowing that someone will be able to sleep soundly under the shelter. This meaningful service received wide acclaim, and teachers have decided to continue with the program. We thank the teachers and students involved, and hope that more students and teachers would participate in the future.
