The Elementary Department Hosts 2014 Taiwan-China Elementary Language Teaching Conference

The Elementary Department hosted the 2014 Taiwan -China Elementary Language Teaching Conference on April 28th, led by Taiwanese Elementary Language Education Chairman Dr. Wu and National Hsinchu University of Education Principal Dr. Chen, with the Hsinchu City Major Mr. Hsu. This conference provides long term educational exchanges between China and Taiwan. This year, the well-known teacher Mr. Bai from Yuanling Elementary School in China, Ms. Yang from NEHS Elementary Department and Taoyuan County Da Hua Elementary School¡¦s Ms. Lin hosted three observational classes. At the same time, NEHS principal Christine Huang and Dong Hua University Chinese Department Professor Han-Chiu Liu were the hosts of the discussions between the classes. At the end of this conference, Professor Wu, Professor Liu, Hsinchu Education University¡¦s Professor Lee and China¡¦s famous teacher Mr. Bai hosted a discussion about teaching poems. Not only did this conference provide teachers from China and Taiwan to see how other teachers taught and spoke, it also encouraged the educational exchanges between the two countries, emphasizing the importance of learning Mandarin from a young age.

High School Department Yan-Wei Liao Awarded 103rd School Year National Humanitarian Role Model by MOE

Yan-Wei Liao from H202 received the 103rd School Year’s National Humanitarian Role Model given by the Ministry of Education and was awarded personally by the Hsinchu City mayor, Ming Tsai Hsu. As a child, Liao had impaired hearing. Because of this, her mother quit her job and drove her to Taipei twice a week for speech therapy. No matter how busy he was, her father would read her stories before and after work in her childhood. Even though Liao’s linguistic abilities experienced constant improvement with her own and her parent’s incessant efforts, she was still hindered by the degree of her hearing impairment and was unable to study at school as well as interact with her classmates during her primary and middle school years. Therefore, in order to complete her beginning years of education, Liao had to self study at home. Although her condition improved after she started high school, Liao permanently lost her right ear’s hearing ability due to an accident. In the tedious process of surgery and rehabilitation, Liao’s parents maintained a positive attitude through their presence and encouragements, allowing Liao to successfully rely on self-studying to finish her freshman year without being able to hear any teachers?lectures. Despite the fact that her educational career was extremely rocky, Liao was not discouraged and instead valued her family even more and strove for her education with even more perseverance. Furthermore, because Liao’s mother witnessed the arduous process of pursuing education for hearing-impaired students, she wanted to use her first-hand experience to help even more people, and thus founded the Angel Voice Association, which promotes early treatment to benefit more families. Liao realized that doing community service not only gives one happiness and proves one’s self-reliance, but it also helps countless other people.

Expanding Students¡¦ Global Perspectives: Elementary Department and Thai School Converse through Webcam

Under the guidance of homeroom teacher Yu Fang Huang and English teacher Ying Rong Hong, the 28 4th Graders of Class 3 in the Elementary Department engaged in a video conference with 14 students from Thai-Chinese International School for the very first time on 5/8. Using an ipad per student, the 4th Graders introduced themselves and conversed with their Thai schoolmates in English. The Greeting Event was especially exciting, where students had to focus on speaking English in groups of two. Our school expresses great interest in further conversations and looks forward to such international interaction in the future. This project will take place once per week discussing topics such as schools (IBSH and TCIS), hometowns (Hsinchu and Bangkok), festivities (Dragon Boat Festival and Thai Songkran), and other themes that stimulate this telecommunicative event in hopes to expand our students?global perspectives and broaden transcultural communications and understanding.

2014 Parents Cup Road Race and Orienteering Event Ends Successfully

In order to promote exercise among students, develop good recreational habits, and build our school¡¦s athletic features in the middle school department, the Office of Student Affairs hosted the 5th annual Parents Cup Road Race during Wednesday 4/9 afternoon. On the day of the event after Principal Christine Huang¡¦s opening words and the PTA president¡¦s urgings and gun-firing, roughly 650 middle school and bilingual department 7-9th graders successfully completed a 3km route around the school track and the Science Park. The school¡¦s fourth ¡§Orienteering Competition¡¨ was held at Jiaotong University on the afternoon of Wednesday 4/23, with a total of roughly 600 students participating from grades 10-12 of the Bilingual Department, grades 10 and 11 from the High School Department, and the 10th graders from the NEHS at Center Taiwan Science Park. Within the vast college campus, the students used knowledge they gained in the classroom and their compasses to read the maps and discern their position, follow routes to find destination points, and attempt to finish the route within the time limits. Although the weather was not optimal, the students were determined to finish their goals in time, creating a rather lively atmosphere.
