Brian Chen wins gold at
International Olympiad in Informatics
Brian Chen (12A) from the Bilingual
Department won silver in the 2011 International Mathematical
Olympiad, gold in 2012, and another gold in 2014 at the
International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI). Taiwan hosted the
26th IOI for the first time this year from July 15 to 17 in
Taipei, hosting 311 competitors from 82 different countries. The
actual competition took place over two consecutive days, with
three different subjects every day. Competitors must design
their own programs to complete the tasks in five hours. Chen won
gold with his outstanding skills in computer science and logic.
Furthermore, National Taiwan University¡¦s mathematics department
established a scholarship program to encourage and attract
talented students to enroll in NTU, and further train them to
become an internationally renowned mathematician. Chen is the
first student to receive this scholarship. Let us show our
gratitude to Mr. Spock Tsai, who guided Chen to his success.
NEHS shines in
the
National Competitions
At the 2014 Taiwan Regions of
Mathematics League (TRML), Team
¤õÀs³J combining members
from the middle- and high-school departments won a national
silver medal! The team’s members include Di-Yu Chen, Jia-Wei Liu,
Xiang-Rui Wu, Hao-Yun Chang, Yu-Ting Liu, Yi-Cheng Huang,
Zhen-Yu Huang, Yun-Ting Tsai, Yi-Hong Wu, Jian-Ping Liu,
Chong-Hao Chao, Ren-Wei Huang, Jun-You Wang, Yan-Xiang Chang
(M304) and Shi-Yu Wang (M205).The TRML is a competition designed
for students in Taiwan’s high schools with problems from the four
mathematical fields of number theory, algebra, geometry and
combinatorics. Each team consists of fifteen members, who
compete in four rounds: the Team Round, Power Round, Individual
Round, and Relay Round. In particular, Yan-Xiang Chang of M304
also won an individual silver medal at this competition! There
are also three teams from the high-school department who won
team honorable mentions in the northern or central region. Also,
at the 12th Intelligent Iron Man Creativity Contest and 10th
International Senior High Schools Intelligent Ironman Creativity
Contest, Team ¶Æ¼b¸¡¶Â¶¤ from the high-school department won first
place in the international division and third place in the
national high-school division. The team’s members are Ke-Xin
Wang, Xin-He Zhou, Guo-Lun Zeng, Rui-Jun Lin, Xin-Wen Chang and
Han-Yong Jian. Finally, at the 2014 Hsinchu Region High-School
Thematic Studies Competition, Cheng-Xin Wu and Fang Chen won an
excellence award and Zhi-Jing Wu and Fang-Yu Chen won an
honorable mention, both in the field of biology. Many thanks go
to the teachers who made these results possible: Jun-Nan Xu, Hui-Zhu
Chen, Qi-Ming Huang, Ju-Han Zheng, Yu-Zhen Zhou, Hui-Qing Feng
and Wei-Bang Jie. For detailed name lists, please see the honor
roll at the back of the newsletter.
IBSH¡¦s Experimental ¡§Future
Classroom¡¨ Innovation Plan
IBSH, Taiwan Normal University High
School, and National Taichung Girls?Senior High School are now
part of the Foxconn Technology Group plan of implementing a new
generation of uture Classroom Education Innovation programs,
which includes building centralized digital learning classrooms.
The team hopes to provide teaching materials and platforms for
teachers and interactive learning and group discussions for
students by integrating different educational fields with
technological advances, such as the Internet, iCloud, webcam,
mobile devices, tablet computers, etc. The aim is to make the
process of learning more fun and to create an ideal environment
for students. Hopefully, teachers will be able to create more
inventive ways for learning in different fields, allowing
education to cross beyond the border of dull blackboards and
boring textbooks, and to inspire students passion for learning.
Let us put these technologies to good use by increasing our
efficiency in learning and becoming proactive in our pursuit of
knowledge.
2014 Animal Carnival at NEHS
Hosted by the Jane Goodall
Institute, and jointly by the Hsinchu City Government and our
school, the 2014 Roots and Shoots Day-Hsinchu Animal Carnival
will take place at the Hsinchu Science Park in the afternoon of
November 2 (Sunday). The event route will start from the meeting
point at NEHS, wind around Waterfront 3rd road, the Lake Placid
Park South Wing trail and back to our school. An estimate of 800
to 1000 people, donning festive costumes, from various schools
and civil organizations will participate in the March
performances. The 80-year old Dr. Jane Goodall will participate
for the entire duration of the march and give a speech at NEHS
after the march. Our school Elementary students, IBSH 5~6th
graders, and freshmen pupils will be present at the gathering.
Starting in October, the art teachers and three artists from the
Jane Goodall Institution will incorporate the school ecological
habitat into the Art curriculum by using recycled materials to
make animal masks and props. Through the festive march, they
will present the diversity of animals, promoting the concept of
animal conservation, to speak up animal rights.
NEHS and Hsinchu City Government
Hosts International Teacher¡¦s Education Program
Since 2012, the Ministry of
Education has pushed the School-based International education
Plan for the primary and secondary schools, with ¡§Fostering 21st
Century International Talents¡¨ as the main motto. NEHS has,
since then, promoted 3 years of international education, and by
2014, produced eye opening developments: international
elementary education certificates plans and coral reef
ambassador and education projects. One such professional
education advancement program was hosted in collaboration with
the Hsinchu City Education Department from July 1st to 4th in
NEHS¡¦s First Conference Room. Experienced participants and
pioneers of globalized education include: Professor Yi-Tsing
Chuang and Professor Wen-Ro Hong from National Chi Nan
University, Principal Christine Huang, Principal Dow-Ren Pan
from Kaohsiung Municipal Wenshan Senior High School, and Dean
Tsai-Ron Zeng from New Taipei Municipal Tamsui Vocational High
School. A total of 80 Hsinchu City teachers and administrative
members participated and were awarded certificates in
international education. This educational project aims to
establish the foundation of an internationalized education
system with teachers and administrative staffs in the Hsinchu
area. With this globalization of education, learning has
transcended the classroom walls, allowing students to explore
the world and to become responsible global citizens.
NEHS Community Service Promotion
Program - A Success
Community service has always been
promoted and encouraged at NEHS. As a result, many students have
participated in such programs and have taken away valuable life
skills such as service, cooperation, respect, and acceptance.
This year, 21 rising NEHS Juniors along with NEHS Student
Activities Coordinator Ms. Ho participated in an international
service trip based in Olango, off the coast of Cebu. Meanwhile,
IBSH students, along with Mr. Spock Tsai, Ms Casey Feng and Ms.
Suzanne Huang, served as volunteers and country guides in the
2014 International Olympiad of Informatics (IOI). In addition,
H205, under the guidance of Ms. Liu and Dean Hsieh as well as
the financial assistance of SYNTEC Education Foundation,
successfully hosted a four-day science camp for 29
underprivileged children and families from Laos. By hosting this
science camp, they hope to ignite these childrens¡¦ interest in
learning and give them a basic understanding of English, Math,
Physics, and Chemistry.
