New School
Year New Atmosphere
NEHS Welcomes Principal Mr. Roger Lee
Our school’s seventh principal, Mr. Roger Lee, officially took
office on August 1, 2017. On the inauguration day, school
administrators hosted a grand ceremony that invited esteemed
guests, government officials, our school’s former principals, as
well as Mr. Lee’s friends, family, and colleagues to welcome Mr.
Lee as our new principal and to thank our school’s sixth
principal, Ms. Christine Huang, for her service. Principal Lee
was enthusiastic to learn about the different departments of our
school and to understand our school in a short period of time.
In the opening ceremony on August 30, Principal Lee greeted
students and teachers with his speech about safety, health,
respect, and care and wished everyone a splendid school year.
NEHS Pride-Science and Linguistic
Education Reaps in Success
Our school’s students have attended international competitions
for a long time and consistently brought back outstanding
results. This year was of no difference. On July 22nd, Wang Shi
Yu from H205 won a silver medal at the 58th International
Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) held in Rio de Janerio, Brazil. On
May 8th, Zhang Yan Xiang from H305 won a bronze medal at the
18th Asian Physics Olympiad (APho). Huang An Rong from H304
participated in the 2017 IYPT (International Young Physicists’
Tournament) and won a silver medal. Su Bai Xuan from H205
participated in the 2017 International Olympiad in Informatics
(IOI) and won a silver medal. In addition to mathematical and
physics competitions, our school participated in linguistic
tournaments as well. Zeng Yuan from H305 and Julian Liu from 12A
participated in the 2017 International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL)
as a group and won gold medal. Julian Liu also won a silver
medal for an individual competition. The students’ brilliant
performances once again brought honor to our school.
Congratulations to the award-winning students!
Representing Taiwan in Israel: Winning
Third Place for the International Rube Goldberg Contest
Thchnion – Israel Institution of Technology, one of the leading
institutes of science and engineering in the world, hosted a
competition in which teams of high school students from schools
around the world designed and created their own Earth Daythemed
Rube Goldberg machines. Alan Lee, Alex Ku, Anthony Chen, Brian
Feng, Hong Huang, Hubert Hung, and Thomas Kim from IBSH banded
together to form the only team representing Taiwan, and were
awarded third place. The Israeli representative in Taiwan, Asher
Yarden, arrived at our school personally to bestow the awards
and deliver a speech, illustrating the importance of the
competition to Israel. Through incorporating the concepts behind
traditional Taiwanese trinkets in their design, the students
managed to infuse Taiwanese culture with the technological
aspect of the project. Most of their supplies were found in the
school’s recycling house, reinforcing the idea of being
eco-friendly for their Earth Day project, which included symbols
of the alarming effects of global warming such as air pollution,
wastewater discharge, deforestation, and mudslides. They also
introduced the 5Rs of environment protection: to Recycle, Regrow,
Reuse, Reduce, and Refuse. The students ended the video by
asking viewers to contribute to what should be a global effort
of protecting the Earth’s environment, and hopefully one day
returning Mother Nature to her original state of beauty.
“One student, one project”: NEHS
Electives Course at NTHU College of Engineering’s Joyful
Inception
“One student, one project” is among the brightest milestones
established in the NEHS curriculum this school year. After
multitudinous discussions with Professor Lin He-Nan of National
Tsing Hua University (NTHU), the ends of NTHU and NEHS finally
meet as students embark on courses with esteemed professors from
the College of Engineering and acquaint with the process and
learning of college. This year, ten professors from the
Departments of Chemical Engineering, Power Mechanical
Engineering, Materials Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering
generously participated in the year-long courses. The topics
prescribed include Nanomaterials, Energy Materials, Innovative
Engineering, and Electronic Technology Development, open to NEHS
juniors and IBSH students from grades 10-12. A welcome inception
party was hosted on 8/31 at NTHU, marking the outset of this
journey as professors and students get to know each other and
look into their operation laboratories. The potential of
something exciting is evident; it is with even higher hopes that
students, administrators, and professors alike target as they
proceed with the courses every week to stimulate exceptional
flames of glory on the scientific platform.
