B
ilingual Jannie Tseui Receives Acceptance from Harvard
Teachers and students were happy to hear that senior Jannie Tsuei
of  the  Bilingual  Department   received   early   acceptance   from
Harvard University in the middle of December. Because of intense
competition ,  to receive  early acceptance from Ivy League schools
is very difficult .  Yet  because  of  Jannie's academic achievement
and  accomplishments ,  she has proven herself to be of excellence
and  of  eligibility .  Congratulations  to  Jannie Tsuei and may she
have a great time in her college years!

E
lementary Department Drama Program Enriches Student's
    Minds

As  the  pleasing  winds  of  autumn  whispering of  fallen golden
leaves   swirled   near ,  the  students  of  Elementary  Department
enjoyed  the  performance  of  many  talented actors and actresses.
Students of the Bilingual and Kindergarten Departments were also
cordially  invited  to  attend. The first of these series of production
was  The  Special  Horse  Catching   Force   presented  by  the  If
Children's  Drama  Group  on  November  16th .  Following  this
spectacular    performance   was   the   play   Toyota's   Blessing,
performed by  the  Chwen-Ching Foundation on November 20th.
The  grand  finale was The Happy Well performed on December
7th  by  the  Victory Church. The actors' lively performances and

    21st Anniversary

NEHS School Band performed  at the Science Park's twenty-first
anniversary on the night of December 14th. Despite the miserable
weather ,  our  students  enthusiastically  performed  Latin  Gold ,
Seagate Overture, Disney Spectacular, and Overture for Winds, to
start  up  the event . In the cold and wet weather, their euphonious
music warmed the  audience, and the audience showered the band
with  praises  as  our  students opened the lighting ceremony with
Centuria.

B
ilingual Department Chinese Presentation
The elementary students of the Bilingual Department have always
been quick and eager learners of the Chinese language. To display
the  results  of   their   learning ,  they  held  their  annual  Chinese
presentation  on  November  27th .  Not  only  did   teachers   and
students  devote themselves entirely to practicing but parents also
did  their  best  to  help. For example, the first graders performed
" The  Mouse's Bride," a well-known folktale. In order to recreate
the atmosphere of a traditional Chinese wedding, parents prepared
decorative  hangings ,  trumpets ,  cymbals , and  gongs and even
borrowed  a  palanquin  to  carry  the bride in. The children attired
themselves  in  traditional  garments  and  held   a  loud  wedding
onstage .  To  the teachers, seeing the enthusiastic participation of
students  and  parents  was  a reward in itself.

"
Fly So High"-Aerospace Research Club Launches Rockets
Our  school's  Aerospace  Research  Club  presented the results of
their  research  on  December 15th ,  firing the model rockets they
painstakingly  designed  for  weeks at the school field. In order to
reduce the weight of the rockets , students used paper and plastics
as  their  materials .  Besides  the   rockets ,   they  also   designed
peripherals  such  as  ignition   systems and triple-track trackers to
assist the rockets in  their  flight. With everyone's cooperation, the
rockets took off  successfully.  Several rockets are to be improved
and launched again on December 26th. The president of the club is
Experimental senior Shih-ming  Hsieh ,  and the teacher advisor is
Mr. Chien-Hui Shih. Besides learning  theories, the club focuses a
great deal on actual experimentation.  There  are thirty members at
present ,  including  both  high   school   and  junior   high  school
students .  As  there  are  only   two  female  members ,  girls  are
encouraged to join.

H
igh School Choir Performs Superbly in Competition
The  NEHS  High  School  Choir  attended  the  2001  City-wide
Hsinchu Student Music Competition. With the song " For unto a
Child Is Born" and a Taiwanese folk song, the choir  managed to
enter  the  finals ,  which  are scheduled for March next year. The
choir teacher Ms. Chang  indicated  that success for the choir had
not been easy. The choir practiced usually on Saturday mornings.
The  students'  passion  for  singing ,  Ms. Chang  adds , is what
motivates her to use after-school hours for practice. Our gratitude
goes  out  to  Ms. Chang ,  whose  contribution  made  the choir's
spectacular  performance  possible .
