全校通力合作 積極嚴防SARS 

為預防  SARS ，本校各部積極進行宣導，並於十二月五日起開始要求所有學生在家每日早晚共兩次測量並記錄體溫。此外，校方亦已採購並儲備足夠的口罩、溫度計、洗手乳等相關物品，不但嚴格要求發燒的學生務必留在家中休息並觀察，三天未退燒者聯絡 117  專線電話就醫檢查，更要積極預防，經常徹底清掃校園，消毒環境，鼓勵學生勤洗手、多運動、發燒不上學，在家多休息。希望能夠藉著全校師生及家長的通力合作，維護全體人員的健康。

全國教育局學務管理會議   雙語部分享聘用外籍教師經驗

九十位各縣市政府教育局引進外籍教師業務相關人員，參加全國教育局學務管理課 (股) 長會議，由教育部國教司翁榮銅專門委員與林威志科長率隊，於十一月二十七日下午蒞臨本校參訪。吳校長偕同雙語部黃芳芷主任及鄭貴立老師在本校行政大樓第二會議室接待，並簡報分享有關外籍教師引進、管理、輔導等經驗。與會者就各項議題進行熱烈的提問與討論，本校人員也悉心具體說明，雙方都得到豐富的收穫!

高中部張維貞 國語文競賽 全國第二名
林韡承 李信宜 全國分區英文比賽 中區優勝

由教育部主辦之年度「全國國語文字音字形競賽」於十二月五日在竹北博愛國中舉行，本校代表高二二班張維貞同學，擠身全國數百位精英代表當中，出類拔萃，奪得全國第二名之殊榮。另由教育部中部辦公室主辦「全國高中英語北、中、南分區比賽」中部地區決賽，英文作文及英文演講比賽項目分別於十一月五日及十四日在國立台中第二高級中學舉行。本校代表高三四班林韡承及高一一班李信宜，分別榮獲英文作文及英文演講比賽優勝。本次競賽，兩位同學分別從近九十位中部地區各校代表中，脫穎而出，與其他五位優勝者同享最高榮譽的優勝獎項，殊屬難得。本刊特於本期第十二頁刊登李信宜同學的參賽心得，與讀者共享。在此深深感謝高美玲、許儀宇、林淑瑜三位老師的特別指導! 

高中部林晏佑 榮獲全國高中數學競賽 個人銀牌

由財團法人九九文教基金會舉辦的「第五屆台灣區全國高中數學聯盟數學競賽」，於十月二十五及二十六日，在國立台灣大學舉行。高一四班部林晏佑同學，榮獲個人賽銀牌獎。團體賽部分，高三 4 班王涵及高二4班蘇皓瑋等，以及高一4班楊佳寧等兩隊各十五位參賽同學表現優異，分別榮獲團體銅牌獎及團體賽優等獎。在此特別恭賀並感謝顏貽隆、林淑真以及莊添丁等多位指導老師! (得獎名單詳見榮譽榜)

洪蘭博士蒞校演講 擠爆多功能教室

洪蘭博士應新竹市文化局家庭教育中心及本校國小部之邀，於十一月二十五日下午一至四時，在多功能教室，為教職員工、家長、及社區人士演講：「激發孩子的潛能－學習的神經機制」。洪博士現擔任中央大學認知與神經科學研究所所長，多年來以其過人的智慧及服務的精神，不但深入於神經科學的研究，更以翻譯書籍、演講等方式致力於科普知識的推廣，期能培養眾人科學思考的能力，並建立正確的教養觀念。近三百位聽眾擠滿了多功能教室，一同沉浸在洪博士發人深省、妙語如珠的演講當中，喜悅的學習。演講會後，洪博士還接受本刊專訪，請見第八頁「人物專訪」單元。

高中部江以進、劉欽中  參加全國及國際木球比賽 凱旋而歸

高三一班江以進同學入選為木球國家代表隊國手，於十月下旬參加在南京市舉辦的「第三屆亞洲城市盃木球錦標賽 」，贏得男子團體組第一名及個人第三名。劉欽中亦表現出色，榮獲「2003南京木球公開賽」團體組第四名。江以進、劉欽中並於十二月六、七兩日參加於雲林縣私立義峰高中舉辦的「全國中等學校木球錦標賽」，江以進榮獲高中職男子組個人第一名，並與劉欽中贏得雙人組第一名，兩人同時取得教育部運動績優甄試保送資格。兩位同學在黃展明及李素滿老師指導下，球技高強，堅毅卓絕，不但為校爭光，更已培養出自身精湛的運動專長，特此祝賀!

高國中部樊敖宣 劉凡宣  竹市美術比賽 榮獲佳績

高三一班樊敖宣送件參加由新竹市政府主辦之年度美術比賽，榮獲高中普通組西畫類第一名及水墨畫類第二名之殊榮，並獲晉級參加全國決賽；國三四班劉凡宣亦在國中普通組西畫類組中，榮獲佳作。本期刊頭為樊敖宣於十一月參加苗栗縣文化局舉辦之年度美展優選作品「童年涼夏」，特與讀者分享。

高國中部棒球隊 獲竹區棒球聯賽第二名

由教育部主辦的九十二學年度新竹市中小學棒球聯賽，國中青少棒組與高中青棒組分別於十月十三日及十月二十二至二十四日在市立棒球場舉行競賽。本校國中青少棒隊劉定彥等十位選手，以及高中青棒隊彭凱棟等十五位選手，在邱中正、陳樹華、鄭富仁、藍文權等四位老師的辛勤指導下，勤奮練習，成果優異，榮獲新竹區第二名的佳績。在此為整個團隊喝采股掌，也感謝教練們的帶領指導! ( 選手名單詳見第七頁英雄榜)

SCHOOL-WIDE COOPERATION TO PREVENT SARS

Starting from December 5, the entire school has requested that all students take and record their temperatures at home twice daily. If a student has a fever, the school will require him or her to stay at home. If the fever does not recede in three days, the student will need to obtain medical care. Additionally, the school has purchased and stored plenty face masks, thermometers, and hand soap and will also be cleaning and disinfecting the school grounds. Students are encouraged to engage in health-maintaining activities such as washing their hands, exercising, and staying home if feverish.

ATTENDEES AT NATIONAL EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION CONFERENCE VISIT NEHS

Under the leadership of Education Department officials, ninety-plus education administrators visited NEHS in the afternoon of November 27. Principal Wu, Bilingual Department Dean Christine Huang, and Foreign Teachers' Liaison Gary Cheng received the delegation in the Second Conference Room. Our administrators shared their experiences and knowledge with regard to bringing in, working with, and aiding foreign teachers. 

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WIN NATIONAL 
AWARDS IN CHINESE AND ENGLISH COMPETITIONS

High School Department student Chang Wei-jen won second place at the Education Department-sponsored National Chinese Language Competition on December 5. She distinguished herself from among hundreds of outstanding students from all over the country. Furthermore, senior Lin Wei-chen and sophomore Lee Hsin-yi won the English Composition category and the English Speech category respectively at the district-level round for the National High School English Competition. Congratulations to these students and thanks go to their instructors Kao Mei-ling, Hsu Yi-yu, and Lin Shu-yu!

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS BRING BACK AWARDS FROM TRML

The 5th Taiwan Regional Mathematics League, hosted by the Nine-Nine Cultural and Educational Foundation, took place on October 25-26 at the National Taiwan University. Sophomore Lin Yen-yo won second place in the personal section, and students Wang Han and Yang Chia-ning, along with fourteen of their peers, made a strong showing in the group section. Wang Han and her team placed third, while Yang and her teammates won an Honorable Mention. We would like to congratulate and thank teachers Lin Shu-jen, Jaung Tien-ding, and Yen Yi-long, among others, for their hard work and quidance!

DR. HONG LAN GIVES SPEECH AT NEHS

Doctor Hong Lan visited NEHS and gave a speech to three hundred people on “The Stimulation of a Children's Ability” on November 25. Dr. Hong currently holds the esteemed position of Chairman at the Graduate Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience at the National Central University. Please refer to page 8 for more on the interview with Dr. Hong Lan.

HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS JIANG YIH-JIN AND LIU
CHIN-JONG WIN WOOD BALL COMPETITIONS

In October, Jiang Yih-jin, a High School senior at NEHS, entered "The Third Asian City-wide Wood Ball Tournament" in Nanking and won first place in-group and third place personal in the male category. Liu Chin-jong, also a senior, received fourth place in the group category for the "2003 Nanking Wood Ball Competition." With medals from regional and national competitions, both of the students are qualified as Outstanding Athletes for College Admission. Congratulations!

NEHS STUDENTS FAN AU-SHIUAN AND LIU 
FAN-SHIUAN WIN ART COMPETITIONS

High School Department senior Fan Au-shiuan participated in the Annual Hsinchu City Art Competition and won first place in the western painting category and second in the inked category, which advanced him into the National Competition. Also, Junior High Department student Liu Fan-shiuan received an Honorable Mention in the western painting category. We applaud these students for their achievements.

NEHS BASEBALL TEAMS WIN SECOND PLACE
IN CITY COMPETITION

On October 13 and October 22 to 24 respectively, the high school and middle school students conducted a baseball competition at the national baseball stadium. Guided by coaches Chiu Chun-chen, Chen Shu-hwa, Jeng Fu-ren, and Lan Wen-chuen, ten middle school and fifteen high school athletes from our school practiced very hard and won second place. Let's congratulate these wonderful athletes and thank the coaches for their guidance.
