本校參加社區「五校歲末聯合音樂會」熱鬧聯歡迎新歲
本校受邀參加鄰近社區共五所學校「歲末聯合音樂會」，與龍山國小、關東國小、科園國小及光武國中等四所學校師生家長，共同迎接新的一年。此聯合音樂會於十二月三十一日晚上七至九時，在光武國中大禮堂盛大舉行。在本校吳校長、家長會黃昉鈺會長及國小部曾良惠主任陪同下，雙語部學生藍培儷、林芹卉及譚安應邀演出，以鋼琴三重奏演奏貝多芬及布拉姆斯樂曲共兩首。藍培儷等三位學生甫於去年三月榮獲全國音樂比賽冠軍，造詣深厚、默契絕佳，獲得如雷的掌聲，也以美妙的音樂陪伴五校師生一起邁入嶄新的而美好的2005年。

國小部資源中心招待桃山國小學生參觀訪問
繼去年八月艾莉風災後，本校師生持續關懷桃山國小師生，並已逐漸建立熟悉、溫馨的情誼。為了更增進彼此更深入的交流，國小部資優資源班五、六年級學生，與桃山國小五、六年級學生，通信交筆友，並於十二月三十一日邀請桃山國小筆友到校參觀聯誼。桃山國小林育宏及黃正賢兩位老師帶領二十二位學生於當日上午九時抵達園區門口，本校田瑞貞及鄭碧玟老師帶領擔任接待的二十九位資源班學生，首先陪同貴賓參觀隸屬於行政院的太空計劃室。接著，在本校第二電腦教室，曾良惠主任致歡迎詞，並由田瑞貞老師指導桃山國小學生製作個人網頁。中午，由曾主任、李素滿老師、資源班老師以及資源班家長代表陪同，在貴族世家享用完午餐後。由於天雨，擔心山上路滑，於下午二時提前結束行程，小筆友們互相擁抱，依依不捨的送貴賓們踏上歸途，並期待未來繼續舉辦兩校聯誼活動。

高國中部學生 數理競賽大放異彩
高二四班王渝溥等九位高中部學生在各學科教師的指導下，參加九十三年度「全國高中數學、自然暨資訊學科能力競賽」成果輝煌，在化學、物理、生物、數學、地球科學及資訊各科目競賽榮獲大獎！ 國三學生參加第二屆JHMC國中數學競賽新竹地區決賽亦表現優異，團體組方面，何應佑等四位榮獲一等獎，呂秉耕等四位榮得三等獎；個人組部份，何應佑榮獲一等獎，林硯澤和劉謙凡榮獲二等獎，徐嘉駿、呂秉耕及石銘威榮獲三等獎。在此恭賀得獎學生，也向指導教師們致謝。(JHMC詳細得獎名單請見第十六頁榮譽榜，高中競賽詳細名單請見上期實中園地榮譽榜)

高中英文選修班與台南一中進行英語視訊會議
今年本校高中部與雙語部合開英文選修課程，高一「英文選修班」近三十位學生在雙語部教師Ms. Joyce Orebello的指導、王鳳真老師以及電算中心的協助下，於十二月十日下午二至三時在行政大樓第一會議室與台南一中進行了一場活潑而豐富的英語視訊會議。會議中討論的主題是「由韓劇討論對偶像崇拜的看法」。詳細活動內容，請見第三頁。

高中部舉辦『歌劇入門』講座研習
為建構高中職社區化適性學習社區，本校教務處主辦『歌劇入門』講座研習，開放本校及社區教師和學生報名參加。此研習特別邀請到楊淑老師主講，於元月八日及十五日兩個週六上午九至十一時，在國文專科教室，藉由比才的卡門等多齣著名歌劇的欣賞，穿插作曲家介紹、歌曲的語譯，及其文學、歷史的背景等，透過視覺與聽覺的幫助，闡述音樂故事。楊淑端老師為奧地利國立維也納音樂學院鋼琴碩士，並曾擔任莫札特音樂學院歌劇伴奏，對音樂典故瞭如指掌，演講生動幽默，聽眾隨著歌劇故事的進展起伏，陶醉在優美浪漫的歌劇世界。

國小部舉辦「壓力調適與認識憂鬱症」研習
為提供同仁正確的壓力調適方法並認識憂鬱症，國小部於一月五日，假多功能教室舉辦「壓力調適與認識憂鬱症」研習。現任竹東榮民醫院臨床心理師張純吉先生應邀主講，並以日常語言深入淺出的介紹壓力、產生壓力的原因、因應調適的方法以及區隔「憂鬱」與「憂鬱症」的判別方法等。會中張醫師並實地教授演練肌肉放鬆的動作。張醫師輔導經驗豐富、談吐風趣，與會教師均感收穫豐碩。

空中英語教室教師 蒞校演出「聖誕青年音樂會」
財團法人所屬「天韻合唱團」及「空中英語教室」外籍教師群於每年聖誕期間舉辦環島音樂會，與青年學生共享聖誕溫馨。十二月十三日上午十時共十六位表演者及工作人員蒞臨本校，在活動中心為青年學生演出「聖誕青年音樂會」，表演以傳統及現代聖誕詩歌為主，並結合短劇、多媒體、舞蹈、現場互動之整體呈現，傳播聖誕節的真義為付出、愛與關懷。現場兩百多位學生熱情參與，與表演者熱烈互動，共度了一段溫馨喜樂的美好時光。

「小太陽兒童劇團」蒞校演出
「小太陽兒童劇團」受邀於一月十四日上午九至十一時為國小部一至六年級師生，在活動中心演出兩場「馬達馬撒的傳說」，希望藉著戲劇演出，幫助同學建立「勇氣」的品格，學習能有承認錯誤的勇氣、愛人的勇氣及拒絕誘惑的勇氣。隸屬於財團法人中華基督教信義會勝利堂的「小太陽兒童劇團」每年十一月至十二月在新竹地區各國小巡迴義演，以與各校攜手，共同為孩子營造一個光明、溫馨的心靈花園為宗旨，表演生動有趣，寓教於樂，深受學生和教師們喜愛。在此感謝劇團成員的熱忱義演及工作人員的慷慨付出。

NEHS ATTENDS JOINT CONCERT OF FIVE SCHOOLS AND CHEERFULLY WELCOMES THE NEW YEAR
NEHS was invited to attend our community's joint concert of five chools, including Long-Shan Elementary, Guan-Dong Elementary, Science Park Elementary, and Guang-Wu Middle School, on December 31, from 7 to 9 p.m. in Guang-Wu Middle School's auditorium. Principle Wu, Parent's Association President Ms. Huang, and Elementary Department Dean Ms. Tzeng also attended, along with Bilingual Department students Audrey Lan, Natalie Lin, and Andrew Tarn, who performed a Violin-Piano-Cello Trio. The above-mentioned students have previously won first place in the nation-wide music contest, developed great teamwork, received grand amount of applause, and lead us to a wonderful year 2005!

ELEMENTARY DEPARTMENT'S RESOURCE CENTER HOSTS VISIT WITH TSES STUDENTS
After the Allie Typhoon hit Taiwan mid-August last year, NEHS has not stopped showing our loving care and concern for the students of Tao Shan Elementary School. In order to promote the relationship between the two schools, some fifth and sixth graders of both schools corresponded in pen pal letters and some TSES students were invited to visit NEHS on December 31, 2004. The 29 students and two teachers from the Resource Center of the Elementary Department greeted the 22 students and two teachers from TSES at 9 a.m. They first toured the National Space Program Office and then the campus of NEHS. Their last stop was the computer room where the TSES students learned how to make their own webpage under the instruction of Ms. Tien Ren-Jen. At 2 p.m. the young pen pals exchanged hugs and were reluctant in saying good-bye to one another.

HIGH AND JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS PERFORM EXCEPTIONALLY WELL IN MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCES COMPETITIONS
Under the guidance of various teachers, high school student Wang Yu-Po along with eight other students performed astoundingly well in the National Mathematics, Sciences, and Communications Competition, bringing back medals in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Mathematics, Geology, and Communications. In addition, junior high students, including Ho Yin-Yo and some others, competed in the Junior High Mathematics Competition (JHMC) Hsinchu Regional Finals and finished well in both team and individual contests. Many congratulations to the winners and much gratitude goes out to the teachers.

HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS HOLDS TELECONFERENCE WITH NATIONAL TAINAN FIRST HIGH SCHOOL
This year, the High School and Bilingual Departments opened a joint English elective class. Under the guidance of Bilingual Department Teachers Ms. Joyce Orebello and Ms. Nancy Wang, and the assistance from the Computer Center staff, almost thirty high school sophomores held a teleconference in English with the National Tainan First High School students on December 10. The topic was "Discussion of celebrity worship based on Korean Soap Operas. More details are on page three.

HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT HOSTS "INTRODUCTION TO OPERAS" SEMINAR
The High School Department hosted an "Introduction to Operas" seminar for the students and teachers in our school and those from the community on January 8 and 15, from 9 to 11 am. The speaker Ms.Yang Shu-Duan combined various famous musical pieces such as Carmen by Bizet, composer biographies, and historical backgrounds into musical stories. Graduated from Austria Vienna's Music School with a master's degree in piano, Ms. Yang is very familiar with the history of music and has a humorous style in presenting her knowledge. The audience enjoyed some heavenly operas through the melodic sounds and exciting storyline.

ELEMENTARY DEPARTMENT HOSTS "ADJUSTING TO STRESS AND ACKNOWLEDGING DEPRESSION" SEMINAR
The Elementary Department held an "Adjusting to Stress and Acknowledging Depression" seminar on January 5, with therapist Chang Chuen-Ji of the Chudong Rongmin Hospital invited as the speaker. Dr. Chang spoke in depth of how to recognize and ameliorate the problems commonly associated with depression, giving everyday examples including an exercise on how to loosen one's muscles. This seminar was an enlightening experience for all audience.

STUDIO CLASSROOM TEACHERS BRING HOLIDAY CHEER TO NEHS
On December 13, Studio Classroom teachers and the Heavenly Melody Choir made a stop at NEHS as a part of their island-wide tour, hosting the much-awaited Youth Christmas Concert. The sixteen-teacher group gave a two-hour long show combining drama, dance, and songs into an interactive concert that dazzled and enthralled a two hundred odd student audience. Through Studio Classroom's fantastic performance, students learned the true importance of love and compassion on this worldwide-celebrated holiday.

SHIAO-TAI-YANG CHILDREN'S PERFORMING GROUP TEACHES COURAGE TO ELEMENTARY DEPARTMENT
STUDENTS
Shiao Tai Yang (Little Sun) Children's Performing Group performed two shows for the Elementary Department students on January 14. The acted legend of "Mah Dah Mah San" was chosen for its enactment of the moral of courage: courage to admit wrongness, to love others, and to resist temptation. We thank the Shiao Tai Yang Performing Group for their time and talent in presenting us with these wonderful and meaningful plays.
