That the Taiwanese government should adopt stricter punishment to curb juvenile crime。

NEHS LIBRARY RECEIVED NEW BOOKS
FROM THE CENTRAL OFFICE OF MOE

The NEHS library has recently received 245 volumes of donated new books on Taiwan history and geography from the Central Office of the Ministry of Education. Our school librarians volunteered their service in helping the MOE’s English Books Committee projects. In return, NEHS was generously included into the donation list. These books are already in circulation at the library and the duplicate copies were sent to high school classes to enrich their class library. Many rare publications are included in this newly added collection to the NEHS library. Many thanks to the Central Office of the MOE for their generosity. Students, teachers and parents are encouraged to make full use of these new arrivals of books.

NEHS RANKED FIRST AT 2006 CICERO DEBATE CONTEST
The annual 2006 Taipei Citywide Cicero English Debate contest for high school students took place on December 23 of 2006 at Chungshan Girls High School. Of all the 8 schools (16 teams) in competition, the NEHS team (with members from both the Bilingual department and the High School department) finished as the best team after a series of heated debates. The topic this year was “That the Taiwanese government should adopt stricter punishment to curb juvenile crime”. Students were challenged to complete extensive research and preparation, practice a full range of drills prior to the debate, exercise critical thinking, personal expression, careful weighing of evidence and tolerance of others' opinions throughout the debate, and learn to appreciate the free and open exchange of ideas. At the end, the true essence of democracy was fully practiced. Thanks to Ms. Ting for her guidance and the team for their fabulous work, and best wishes to all in the 2007 Cicero Debate.

2006 QUALITY ENGLISH-FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT EVALUATION
NEHS RECOGNIZED AS “VERY GOOD”

The evaluation of 2006 Quality English-friendly Environment, finalized in October, recognized NEHS as “very good”, an equivalent to “2nd place” in the evaluation. This is the 3rd time NEHS received this honorable recognition. The evaluation is part of the Executive Yuan’s action plan to integrate establishment of a bilingual environment and training of English talents for professional competencies, in order to expedite Taiwan’s connection with the international community. Since the evaluation’s debut in 2002, more than 1257 public and private agencies have been evaluated. Overall, this plan has taken effect in improving public awareness and participation in creating a “Quality English-friendly Environment” in Taiwan.

PERFORMANCE OF THE “ENGLISH DIPLOMATS” OF NEHS
INSPIRED VISITED TEACHERS AND STUDENTS

The “English Diplomats” of NEHS and four other local high schools (Hsinchu Girls’ Senior High School, Hsinchu High School, Chien-Kung Senior High School and Shu- Guang Girls’ High School) toured and performed skits for 4 junior high schools in Hsinchu on December 20, 2006. The purpose of the “English Diplomats” program (sponsored by the MOE) was to equip high school students with abilities in English presentation and diplomatic skills to promote Taiwan to the world. These English Diplomats took on a challenge as they managed to complete the tour while at the same time working with their heavy academic loads and busy school schedules. Their achievements and efforts were widely recognized, and truly valued and appreciated by all. Chu-kuang Junior High School’s impressive work of turning all five scripts of the skits into PowerPoint presentations, within 48 hours of receiving the files, and presenting them to enhance students’ learning and understanding spoke clearly of how much the “English Diplomats” were appreciated. Students blessed with such hardworking teachers with such clear vision will sure turn out to be the next stars of the “English Diplomats” program.

BILINGUAL 4TH GRADER BRIAN CHEN
CHALLENGED AND ACED 2006 AMERICAN MATH COMPETITION

The 2006 AMC8 results came out on January 7, 2007. Bilingual 4th grader Brian Chen skipped 4 levels and challenged the competition and aced a perfect score. There were 150,000 participants worldwide competing in the AMC8 2006, some of them are elementary students like Brian who chose to challenge a higher level of math capacity. Being one of the only six elementary students who scored a perfect 25 in Taiwan, Brian Chen’s amazing achievement was welcomed with an applausive recognition. Brian has demonstrated outstanding math capacity far above his grade level. As a result, Ms. Christine Yin, a high school math teacher, started tutoring him in September 2005. Ms. Yin was impressed by how Brain finished 8th and 10th grade Math in one year. This semester Brian finished geometry and is currently enjoying analytical geometry. Congratulations to young Brian on the impressive accomplishment and thanks to Ms. Yin for her fine teaching. The appreciation also goes to the Bilingual Administration for tailoring education to students’ aptitude.
