2007 SCHOLASTIC ACHIEVEMENT TEST
CHANG- HENG WANG EARNS PERFECT SCORE
The seniors of the High School Department
performed exceptionally well on the scholastic achievement test.
The test is scored on a scale of 0-75. Senior Chang-Heng Wang
earned the full score of 75, an outstanding achievement. Chang-Heng
Wang has a wide variety of interests and has recently passed the
Semi-Finals in Physics Olympiad. His achievements brought honor
to NEHS and made us all proud. Furthermore, over 81% of our
school’s senior students scored in the top twenty-fifth
percentile, and 28 seniors scored above the 70-point mark. We
wish this year's graduating students much academic success!
2007 PHYSICS CHEMISTRY AND BIOLOGY OLYMPIAD
SEMI-FINALS
HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS BRING BACK HONOR
The 2007 Physics, Chemistry and Biology
Olympiad Nationwide Representatives Semi-Finals were held
respectively in the past few weeks. High School Department
students Chang-Chi Wu, Chang-Heng Wang, Gang-Jun Yang, and Yu-Xiang
Wang passed the competition in Physics and won the honor to be
in the Finals. Out of the 29 semi-finalists in Taiwan, it’s quite
an honor that four are from our school. Furthermore, also from
the High School Department, Adam Lu passed the Biology
Semi-Finals and will be competing in the Finals in April. In the
Chemistry Olympiad, Long-Yen Chen placed 3rd, and Ying-You He,
awarded the first place, will be representing our country at the
2007 International Olympiad Finals, which will be held in Russia
during the month of July. Congratulations to these outstanding
students and best wishes to their future glory.
MS. JIN-HSIEN LEE RECEIVES AWARD FOR GOOD
TEACHING
FROM STANFORD UNIVERSITY
High School Chinese teacher Ms. Jin-hsien Lee
has been invited by Stanford University to participate in a
heart-warming ceremony and to receive an award for her
outstanding work in teaching. NEHS alumnus Jean Yang (Class of
2003) performed exceptionally well during her education at
Stanford, and is graduating this year with the honor of the
Frederick Emmons Terman Engineering Scholastic Award. For
students graduating with high honors (scoring in the top fifth
percentile), Stanford University has the tradition of inviting a
high school teacher who influenced him/her the most, so to award
the fine work in preparing the student well for higher
education. The expenses of her entire trip will be paid by
Stanford University, and our school will grant Ms. Lee official
leave for such an honorable occasion. NEHS Bilingual Department
teachers Ms. Christine Huang and Mr. Henry Chen had also
received such honorable recognition in 2005 and 2006
respectively. We would like to thank these teachers for their
dedication to education.
ELEMENTARY CHOIR WINS FIRST PLACE CITYWIDE
On the 4th of December, the Elementary
Department Choir, a recent assemblage which began only last
semester, participated in the 2006 Hsinchu City Choir Contest
and won the first place in their very first competition! We
would like to thank choir teachers Ms. Ming-Yuan Hsieh and Ms.
Shiang-Ru Shih for their guidance and the students for their
hard work, which brought honor to our school. The Elementary
Department has provided a live-recording of the competition for
the entertainment of teachers, students, and parents. You are
welcomed to download the recording from

BIONIC ROBOTS WINTER SCIENCE CAMPS END
SUCCESSFULLY
NEHS opened two Bionic Robots science camps,
led by Mr. Shih-Yuan Huang, a Computer Science teacher from the
High School Department, to all Hsinchu junior high school
students during winter break. The science camp’s goal was to
introduce students to the field of robotics and to stimulate
student interest through robotics hands-on experiences.
Originally, only one session was scheduled to take place from
February 5th to February 7th, but after applications overflowed,
a second session was arranged to take place from February 12th
to February 14th, much to the hopeful expectations of parents
and students. Through participation in the program, students
became familiar with a variety of robot sensors, behavior
manipulation program design, expression through movement of
outer features, etc. Also, they have learned to design robots
with characteristics of animal behavior through program writing,
and spectacular robot talent contests were held during the
sessions. We would like to thank Mr. Shih-Yuan Huang for his
devoted efforts in bringing students into the world of
high-technological robotics and for designing a marvelous
interactive website for students. For more details as well as
the enjoyment of the camp photos and a short film of dancing
robots, please visit the following link:

VILLAGE HEADS INVITED TO GIVE ENVIRONMENTAL
SEMINAR
TO BILINGUAL AP STUDENTS
On the 22nd of January, 18 AP Environmental
Science students, under the arrangement and guidance of Mr. Ray
Chin, met with the village heads of Jin-shan, Ke-yuan and
Hsien-shuei villages in a seminar concerning the effects of
Hsinchu Science Park on the environment. This seminar’s main
purpose was to give students an on-site understanding of how the
development of the Science Park has influenced the environment
and how its population increase has changed populace
concentration, demographics, and quality of living, among other
things. Such an understanding aims to allow students to put
their knowledge into practice in real-life situations. The
valuable experiences of the village heads helped students
understand the huge cost industrial development has had on the
nature surrounding it, and encouraged them to utilize their
knowledge in finding a balance among economic development,
cultural continuation, and environmental preservation. We would
like to thank Mr. Cheng-Guang Luo, Mr. Xing-Nan Zheng, and Mr.
Ming-Chih Lin for making time to participate in this event and
Mr. Ray Chin for his thoughtful planning. Their efforts have led
to the success of this seminar.
LIBRARY SHOWCASES ART THERAPY WORK
Elementary Guidance Counseling Center hosted
a series of 10 sessions of ?Therapy Through Art?for the parents,
and their artwork was showcased at NEHS library from January
17th to March 3rd. ?Therapy Through Art?aims to provide
participants with a non-oral channel of communication. Through
the process of creativity, participants of the program learned
to deal with and resolve emotional conflicts, and to further
explore topics on emotion management, new positive approaches to
life, and more. The participating parents acknowledged that this
program has had a positive and productive effect on harmonizing
of their inner selves and outside experiences. To read more
