Once upon a time there was a happy
little girl who lived with her large loving family in a country
far, far away. The little girl had a squeaky voice so her father
called her Cricket. Cricket grew up in the U.S. in a state
called Wisconsin which was extremely beautiful, with rolling
green meadows and crystal blue lakes. She lived in a small
village, dotted with farms, where cows lazily munched grass all
day long. Cricket loved to explore the cool dark forest and
meadows of wild flowers near her home where she daydreamed about
the fields and rivers of far off lands. The happy little girl
grew up and became a teacher named Mrs.Smith. Teaching in the
U.S. brought much joy to Mrs. Smith's life, but she was still
very curious about the green farms and bustling cities of far
off lands, so she decided to continue learning about the world.
Mrs. Smith got out a map and searched the planet for the perfect
place to start her journey. She soon discovered an alluring
island covered with majestic mountain peaks and surrounded by
sparkling water and the name of this magical place was Taiwan.
When Mrs. Smith arrived
in Taiwan she spent her days investigating the colorful busy
streets of her new city and discovered many interesting things,
like: delicious dumplings and noodles, a charming lake to walk
around, high speed trains, and lively markets selling exotic
fruits. And then one day she discovered the most amazing thing
of all… (To be continued).

I was
born in Denton, Texas. My family moved overseas when I was two.
My father still teaches high school and my mother 6th grade, at
the Singapore American School. After getting my BA from the
University of Texas, I wanted to go back to Singapore. I worked
for CNBC-Asia for a year, then decided to go to the University
of Canterbury in New Zealand for a teaching degree. Last year I
was a substitute teacher at SAS and at the Yangon International
School.
In my free time, I like to read literature, philosophy, and
science fiction. I also collect indie records, and have every
expansion for "The Sims 2."

My name is Kayao Sou
(pronounced Kyle Su). I am Canadian - Chinese and my parents
were originally from Hong Kong. I taught grades 7 through 9 in
Vancouver, Canada before making a life decision to come to Asia
to rediscover my roots. What was supposed to be a brief stop in
Taiwan on the way to Hong Kong has turned out to be anything
but. This will be my 10th year teaching in Taiwan and my first
year at NEHS/IBSH. Additionally, I met and am married to a
wonderful Taiwanese woman who is also a Chinese teacher at a
local Chinese school in Hsinchu. We have a year and half old
daughter named Megan.
In
addition to the academic learning, I believe strongly in making
sure my students learn to be respectable, responsible citizens
with good manners. I have some classroom rules and positive
rewards that will both promote and reinforce this. I will
explain these rules and rewards to both the students and parents
at the start of school year in hopes that the parents will help
me promote these ideals at home and support me as much as
possible. Let’s all work together to ensure these children have
a successful year.

Dear
fellow students and faculty members:
Hi! How
are you? My name is Marina Lin, and I am teaching 9th
grade English as well as the new Broadway musical performance
elective (it’s really good, you should take it!) Having
completed two M.A. degrees at Teachers College, Columbia
University, I spent a good three years in New York. My favorite
pastimes include enjoying concerts at Lincoln Center, ice
skating at Bryant Park, and of course, catching Broadway shows
at Times Square. As a former student of NEHS, it is such an
honor to be able to join the faculty and work with teachers that
I admire. I am excited for this year and everything it will
bring.

Hello! My name is Natalia Juarez. I am from Toronto, Canada and
I have been working in Taiwan for 3 years already. Where does
the time go? Although I am a certified as K-6, my heart is in
primary (K-3). I am happy to be joining the IBSH team, and
looking forward to a successful and fun year to come!

Hello, my name is Sze
Wai Campbell and I will be the new ESL Teacher this year at IBSH.
This is my fourth year working in Hsinchu, Taiwan. I spent the
last three years teaching Kindergarten and Elementary classes at
American Eagle School. I was born in Hong Kong but grew up in a
city of London, Ontario, Canada. I graduated from McMaster
University in Hamilton, Ontario with an Honors Bachelor of
Commerce in 2005. My husband, Shawn Campbell has been a fourth
grade Humanities teacher at IBSH the past three years so I am
fortunate enough to have already met many of the wonderful
staff, administration and students here. In my spare time I
enjoy experimenting with new recipes, exercising and playing
with my cats, Puma and Pony. I am excited about joining the
IBSH family and I look forward to meeting many more students and
colleagues throughout the school year.

From
being born in Los Angeles, CA and eventually moving to IN and
back again to CA, I tend to think I have a very diverse
upbringing. I’ve quickly realized it does not compare to that
of most students here at IBSH. Growing up, athletics played a
huge role in my life, as I competed in most sports offered. As
I grew older, I focused primarily on basketball, which
eventually led to competing at the university level. After
graduating from Cal State San Bernardino, I began my MS in
Counseling, with a specialization in Educational Counseling at
National University (NU) in Los Angeles. During my time in
graduate school, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work
as an Admissions Advisor at NU for approximately 2 years. After
my time spent at NU, I proceeded to work in Los Angeles Unified
School District as a Guidance Counselor/School Psychologist at
Washington Prep HS, Hollywood HS, and Westchester HS.
My career changed spontaneously in the middle of 2006, as I took
a position at a local university in Seoul, S. Korea. Here, I
taught Psychology and English Conversation. Living and working
abroad has proven to be one of the best experiences of my life.
Now, in Taiwan, I look forward to continuing my life abroad and
experiencing all Taiwan has to offer.

Hi, I am
Doug Merz. This is my 33rd year of teaching (WOW,
that’s a long time!). I teach 3rd grade and my wife
Judi is teaching 1st grade. I come from Camano
Island in Washington State, USA. I like to catch and eat crab,
hunt, fish and dig clams.
I have
three grown boys named Mike, Jake, and Steve. I have 2
granddaughters named Margie and Valerie. I miss them very
much! I really like being a grandpa.
Judi and
I have already enjoyed going to the Palace Museum and Taipei 101
in Taipei. We also vacationed in Kenting for 4 days in August.
It was hot!
Prior to
graduating from Western Washington University I spent four years
in the U. S. Navy. I traveled to Japan, Vietnam, Singapore,
Malaysia, and Hong Kong. I am really enjoying Taiwan. The
people I’ve met are wonderful and the food is delicious!
Hi, My
name is Judi Merz and I am the first grade teacher for 1B. I
have taught for 21 years in Alaska and in my home state of
Washington. I have taught first grade, second grade, third
grade, fourth grade, and seventh grade! First grade is my
favorite and I am having lots of fun getting to know my students
and living here in Hsinchu.
Back in
Washington I have 3 boys and two beautiful granddaughters. When
we are together we spend a lot time at our cabin on Camano
Island. Yes, I live on an island when I am in Washington, too,
but it’s not as big as the island of Taiwan.
I love
the beach, reading good books and flamingos. Doug says I have
to add shopping to my list of things I like to do. I am happy
to be here at IBSH.
