NEHS Celebrates Its 28th Birthday

NEHS celebrated its twenty-eighth anniversary on March 23rd. At 8 o’clock in the morning, the ceremony began with the lively pieces of NEHS’s band. Following the band, the kindergarteners, Bilingual department dancers and cheerleading squad, and teachers?choir put forth enthusiastic performances that brought the ceremony’s atmosphere to its climax. At 10:30, the library hosted a tea party and exhibition for retiring teachers and administrators. The event not only presented the diverse experiences of the teachers?artistic endeavors, but also showcased the talents of the Bilingual Department orchestra and the High School Department choir. Mrs.’s gentle performance of a Hakka lullaby and Mr. Mai’s violin performance memorized the audience. The Elementary Department and the Middle School Department displayed student works in the Art room and the Chinese room, attracting the attention and compliments of many parents. An exciting carnival and flea market was hosted in the hallway, where students mustered all their skills to advertise for their booths. The profits made in the carnival will be donated to charity. Special thanks to the Hsinchu City Deputy Mayor Jen Kwuo Shung, Deputy Director Hsia Gwen Hsio of the Administrative Bureau, and all the distinguished guests who participated in the celebration.

Come to NEHS to experience creative interaction with science

To welcome the IYC2011 International Chemistry year, the Chemistry-Express car made its first stop at NEHS on March 30th. This year’s “Have fun with chemistry, come experiment at NEHS?event was hosted by NEHS, the Chemistry Education Resource Center, the International Chemistry Year administration, and the SpringSoft Education foundation. The event displayed films on new experiments made by the Resource Center and the exciting competition by the SpringSoft. In order to allow students to do hands-on experiments, they created a series of games in which students could participate in. 140 students from the NEHS high school department served as the volunteers. The games included chemistry trivia, magical bubbles, nano technology investigation, catching fire through air, rainbow fountain. These series of events attracted more than 1000 teachers and students from the Hsinchu region. Through DIY experiments and science-related displays, students were not only given the chance to understand the depths of scientific world, but also given the chance to allow their creativity to flow without bounds.

ESLRs of IBSH by IBSH Leadership Team of the WASC Accreditation

As IBSH undergoes the process of WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) accreditation, one of our first goals has been to create and refine the school purposes and the ESLRs (Expected School-wide Learning Results). The ESLRs are the goals of the IBSH school program--what we hope our students to become upon graduation. Teachers are encouraged to integrate the ESLRs into their planning and instruction as guidelines for their teaching strategies and curriculum standards; administrators are encouraged align their decision-making and activities planning with the ESLRs. Throughout the process of the WASC self-study, we keep asking ourselves the following question: Does what we do help guide and assist our students in reaching the school goals? By answering yes or no we either discover our strengths or indentify growth areas to be improved.Within the framework of the ESLRs, we’ve completed our self-study on Feb.24 and discovered many school strengths and growth areas. We are proud to continue what we do where the positive findings are reported, and are planning to start addressing the school weaknesses in accordance with our action plans. ESLRs help to bring all teachers together and keep the entire operation of IBSH in line with our expectations for students?learning. We have enjoyed the productive self-study process, and are ready to present our efforts to the coming WASC visiting committee in April.
