2013 Hands-On Fun Science, Enjoy Experimenting

To celebrate NEHS’s 30th anniversary and simultaneously allow more students to experience different scientific activities, our school hosted the 2013 Hands-On Fun Science, Enjoy Experimenting event on March 30 ( Saturday). It attracted students from the National Hsinchu Senior High School, National Hsinchu Girls Senior High School, Hsinchu Municipal Guangwu Junior High School, Yi Ming Senior High School, Hsinchu County Ren Ai Junior High School, Po Ai Junior High School, and the Dasi Junior High School, which traveled from the far off Taoyuan, as well as community students to add up to nearly a thousand participants. This event was facilitated by the 11th grade student body, with 11 chemistry levels, 7 physics levels, and 3 biology levels adding up to a total of 21 levels. One of the levels,  I am a Legendary Shooter  which applied the concept of  using Acetylene to ignite a fire and produce large amounts of heat, CO2, and water vapor, causing a sudden increase in pressure was extremely popular. Furthermore, the event even invited the school’s retired teachers Mr. Shih to initiate an interactive lecturing teachers workshop, constructing a school-wide league of teacher peer support systems, as well as enhancing the professional development of teachers and their effectiveness in educating students.

Congratulations to NEHS Students for Winning Bronze at the Taiwan Young-Students Physicists Tournament

The NEHS seniors Zhen-De Huang¡BDa-Zhong Ji¡BYun-Zhong Lin¡BZi-Yi Wang¡BJian-Yu Sun and juniors Jin-Cheng Zhan¡BWei-Cheng Chen¡BYan-Ting Liu¡BYa-Zhu Zhan¡BYun-Ru Wu participated in the 2012 Y. Z. Hsu Competition - the 5th Taiwan Young-Student Physicists Tournament (TYPT) and obtained two bronze medals! The TYPT is a competition in which high-school students form teams and solve complex scientific problems with their own abilities. They must describe their results convincingly in debate tournaments and defend them with scientific discussion. This competition process is also known as Physics Fights. Competing students must not only be skilled at English and physics skills, but also must be patient and persevering. Since the debates are also done in English, the competition is extremely difficult. Thanks to the devoted training from the teachers Mr. Yu, Mr. Chen, and Ms Shi.

The 28th Senior Oil Painting Exhibition Successfully Closes

The 28th Senior Oil Painting Exhibition was hosted at the Hsinchu County Culture Center from April 3rd to April 14th along with the Opening Tea Ceremony on April 7th. Every beautifully drawn picture in the exhibition were made by our senior students, who have worked on these oil paintings for a year since junior grade in art classes, break times, and weekends, with their colors carefully chosen and paintings thoroughly planned and edited with numerous breakthroughs. Senior 5th Class De-Kai Liao’s short film “Cannot Be Signed?also portrayed how many of the seniors challenged and overcame themselves by drawing these portraits through perseverance while under high school academic pressure. In the “Oil Painting Camp,?they have completed a portrait of their life, brushing the most brilliant colors of their high school years. Special thanks to Teacher Shu for her contributions and guidance in the Hsinchu County Culture Center, making out senior Oil Painting Exhibition especially successful.

Scientific Monograph Exchange with Funabashi High School and Fukushima High School

12 Funabashi High School mathematically-gifted students visited our school along with 4 teachers on Monday, March 18, 2013. The goal of this event was to observe and learn from each other by presenting the results of the students?math and science research from both schools. NEHS junior students from H204(math-and-science gifted class) shared their research results over the past year with the Japanese students through a presentation. On Thursday, March 21, 38 science-gifted students led by 8 teachers from high schools in Fukushima will participate in a mathematical monograph-exchanging activity with NEHS scientifically-gifted students from the class of H205. The initial awkwardness and weird feelings between NEHS and Japanese students were ignited into passion and enthusiasm with their common interest in science. This event broadened our horizon and opened the door to international friendship.

2013 Parents Cup Marathon and Orienteering Race Ended in Success

The 4th Parent Cup Marathon for middle school students was held on the afternoon of Wednesday, April 3rd with a total of 650 students from both the experimental and bilingual departments. On the day of the event, the sun was shining brilliantly and the weather was superb. After a speech from Principal Christine Huang, the PTA President Mr. Peter Lin signaled the started of the race with a shot. The students ran through the track and the Science Park on a route of 3.2km. With encouragement from parents, teachers and fellow classmates, all the students finished the course successfully. The purpose of this event is to promote and develop good habits of exercising, and to establish a distinguished sport for our school. The third NEHS orienteering was held on April 10th at National Tsing Hua University with the attendantees of Experimental Department 10th and 11th grader, Bilingual Department 10th to 12th grader, and Taichung Experimental High School 10th grader. Using compass and their maps, 600 students scampered around the campus searching for checkpoints within limited time. It was quite a sight watching the students.

IBSH hosts ¡u2013 TEA Conference-learning revolution¡v

IBSH held the first TEA Conference on April 13th and also scheduled professional development workshop for IBSH teachers on April 12th, inviting Dr. Diep Nguyen and Mr. Brice Particelli to Taiwan to serve as the keynote speakers. A total of 72 Chinese and foreign administrators and teachers from ten schools attended 2013 TEA Conference. These schools included IBSN, Mingdao High School, Kang Chiao Bilingual School, and Hsinchu International School, etc. Having years of experience training teachers in second language development and curriculum development, Dr. Nguyen was a skilled and precise speaker, explaining ¡uStrategies to provide a Language-Rich Environment for Second Language Learners¡v to the participating teachers. And at the same time, Dr. Particelli used attractive examples and hands-on practice combined to show all the teachers ¡uThe power of Curriculum-Based Publication¡v. TEA-Taiwan Educators Association is established by the international schools in Taiwan Region and its purpose is to provide professional development and a networking platform for international educators in Taiwan.
