Coral Reef Ambassador Project Presentation Held in NEHS

The “Coral Reef Ambassador” project led by the National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium (NMMBA) hosted a wrap-up presentation at NEHS’s International Conference Hall on Monday, April 13. Fourteen ambassadors participated, including Liang-Yu Chen, Yu-Wen Wang, Rennie Jiang, and Joseph Chen from our school and students from the NMMBA, National Chaochou Senior High School, Hengchun Junior High and Liuchiu Junior High. The presentation kicked off as our school’s award-winning brass quintet performed a cheerful tune. The dance team "505" from the Elementary department also attracted applause with their “Beast Dance”. After Principal Christine Huang welcomed guests and reporters with a speech, the 2015 Coral Reef Ambassadors presented, in both English and Chinese, the results of their trip to the United States, which lasted from January 28 to February 18. Professor Fan Tong-Yun took the 22 teachers and students to visit Granite Hills High School, Crawford High School, and Montgomery Middle School, all located in San Diego, California. The group also interned at the Birch Aquarium of University of California, San Diego, and described their experiences there during the presentation. The goal of the trip to the U.S. was not only to promote the beauty of Taiwan’s coral reefs, perform cultural exchange, and advocate environmental protection, but also to train the students’ leadership skills. The schedule, transportation, time management, posters for cultural exchange, and cultural events were all entirely planned and executed by the students. To deepen students’ awareness of marine environmental issues and expand their international perspective, NEHS has participated in the NMMBA’s Coral Reef Ambassador program since 2013. We hope to strengthen the students’ understanding of Taiwan’s marine ecology, particularly the ecology of the coral reefs, and to promote their learning and exchanging of experiences across cultures.

Chiba Prefectural Funabashi Senior High School from Japan visits NEHS

On March 18, 2015, Chiba Prefectural Funabashi Senior High School teacher Mr. Kammura Junji led 29 teachers and students to participate in a scientific research and cultural exchange hosted at NEHS. In accordance with the festivities at NEHS’s 32nd school anniversary, the students were greatly welcomed during their visit. During the opening speeches at the anniversary, students and faculty from the Chiba Prefectural Funabashi Senior High School (CPFSHS) introduced the institution and Japanese Chiba culture, technology, and delicacies as well as performed Japanese folk songs to celebrate NEHS’s school anniversary. Afterwards, the students and faculty, along with H204, engaged in a biology and birdwatching activities at Lake Placid led by Mr. Wei-Ben Jieh followed by a campus tour by the H204 students. In the afternoon, the students participated in the science fair, led by CPFSHS students with their enthralling presentations on scientific research and experimental results. The students displayed their graphs and data on iPads, easily allowing the audience to grasp the essence of their presentations and mend the language barrier. H204’s presentation followed immediately, sharing their results and experimental data with the CPFSHS students. Participating in this cultural and scientific exchange has allowed students from both schools to interact as well broadened their global perspectives through the sharing of experimental results, encouraging bright students from both CPFSHS and NEHS to get the best of both worlds.

IBSH Holds “Open House”

The Bilingual Department hosted “Open House” from April 6th to 10th to allow busy parents to have the chance to better understand their children’s performance at school. Starting one week before the event, parents could log into the IBSH website and register for classes; teachers could also monitor the parents’ attendance. This year’s “Open House” event involved around 94 parent registrations. Opening the classroom up to the parents for observation under the preconditions of adhering to lesson-observation protocols permitted parents to witness teachers’ instruction and students’ learning and led parents to express care for the class, school curriculum and the practicality of education, as well as encouraged teachers to proactively initiate positive communication and interaction with parents with the mutual interest of the student’s education in mind. Furthermore, IBSH held the Science Fair for grades 7 to 12 and 3 to 6 at the gym on April 7th and 8th, respectively, and invited many parents, allowing students the opportunity to explicate their work and research results to participating faculty, students, and parents.

When NEHS Meets Atlanta

On April 10th, eight teachers from the Atlanta Youth Development Center in the US visited our school and 8 classes from the high school department were engaged in the cultural exchange activities. First, our students took turns sharing Taiwan’s special characteristics with the audience: festivals, entertainment, food, and famous figures...then the teachers from the US shared information about the Atlanta Youth Development program. Students from all classes of the high school department reacted to this cultural exchange with excitement. Hopefully, we can use Skype to contact and talk to high school students in Atlanta in the future! This can facilitate communication for language learning and develop each other's Chinese and English skills.
