IBSH Annual Event: Science Fair &
Reading Fair
The IBSH Science Fair was held on
May 18th, featuring 11th grade physics, 10th grade chemistry,
9th grade biology, 8th grade robotics, and 7th grade life
science. Students¡¦ projects first underwent the preliminaries
before each class sent forth its top 3 teams to the fair, at
which IBSH¡¦s science teachers served as judges to determine the
final 3 winners from each grade. All participating students
fluently explained their experiments¡¦ procedures and shared
their results with the judges and other students. We are happy
to say that in accordance with one of IBSH¡¦s ESLRs, cultivation
of an ¡§Innovative and Inquiring¡¨ spirit, the science fair
successfully instilled creativity and perseverance in students.
The 2nd Annual IBSH Elementary Reading Fair took place on
Wednesday, May 11th, from 11:00am-12:00pm. Students from Grades
1-4 were asked to choose a fiction book to present on, including
information such as the title, author, genre, author's purpose,
problem/solution, summary, etc. They each prepared a
presentation and had the opportunity to vote on their favorite
presenter from each grade. Parents, other teachers, and
administrators were also invited to this event, and thoroughly
enjoyed the diverse selection of books and impressive artistic
displays. It was quite a successful event, both fun and
educational.
NEHS Achieves Fruitful Results in
Science Competitions
NEHS has long been dedicated to the
cultivation of science-related subjects. Over the past few
years, students participated in various domestic and
international competitions, achieving excellent results. H302
Chih-Ching Liu won a silver medal in the 2016 International
Geography Olympiad (IGeO), with special thanks to supervisor Ms.
Ling-Xiu Liu and Mr. Hong-Chang Lin. H105 Shi-Yu Wang won a
silver medal in the 2016 International Mathematical Olympiad
(IMO), with special thanks to supervisor Ms. Hui-Chu Chen. H305
Da-Rui He represented Taiwan to participate in the 2016
International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) in Kazan, Russia; he
won a gold medal and placed 8th in the world, with special
thanks to supervisor Spock Tsai. In addition, Jing-Yuan Bai, who
graduated from the high school department in 2016, participated
in the 2016 International Youth Student Physics Debate Contest (IYPT);
under Mr. Shu-Chi Yang, Mr. Yu-Cheng Hung, Ms. Min Yu and Ms.
Ting-Tzu Chen’s instruction, he won a gold medal. Xiang-Rui Wu
attended the 2016 International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) and won
another gold medal for NEHS, with thanks to supervisor Mr. Shu-Chi
Yang, Mr. Yu-Cheng Hung. NEHS hosted the award ceremony on
September 29th to celebrate these student spectacular
achievements. Also, H103 Kai-En Yang participated in the 2016
International Environment & Scientific Project Olympiad (INESPO),
presented the theme of “a three stepped process to correct the
effect of architectural position on earthquake detection?and won
the gold medal. Congratulation to all the aforementioned
students!
NEHS Wind Band Wins Bronze at
International Band Festival
The 2016 biennial Singapore
International Band Festival (SIBF) was held at National
University of Singapore’s Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music.
Middle school department music teachers Yi-Cheng Bao and Jia Lin
led the NEHS Wind Band to participate in the event on July 26th.
The students in the NEHS Wind Band may differ by up to 5 or 6
years in age, yet they all go through the same rigorous training
schedule. In fact, they not only practice on weekdays but also
have extra practices in the week before the competition, in
hopes of winning glory for NEHS. Although during summer only
half of the members (about 35) were able to participate in the
practices, the members took advantage of the extra practices to
train their cooperation and playing skills, competing against
major bands from different countries and eventually winning 3rd
place. We must thank not only the members and the teachers for
their hard work, but also the parents, who helped the team deal
with passport (and other) problems, support the students while
overseas, and document every detail during the whole trip. To
the members, this competition was not only an extremely
challenging experience but also training that inspired them to
dream and reach even higher next year.
NEHS Certified as Google School
Already a technology-integrated
school, IBSH has landed a new breakthrough this July by becoming
a “Google Reference School? one of the four--and the first
public--schools in Taiwan to be certified by Google! Receiving
this honor is no small feat: IBSH has been working tirelessly to
bring technology into its campus. Setting up WiFi within the
school (covering more than 90% of the campus) and opening up the
new campus area (including subject classrooms, laboratories, and
future classrooms that enhance and diversify the learning
experiences of the students) are only some examples of the
technological improvements in our school. Google services,
especially the sharing function, which enables multiple people
to edit online simultaneously, have achieved high popularity and
usage among students and teachers alike, also boosting the “paperless?trend
in our school. In addition, the bilingual department has
thoroughly integrated chromebooks into the learning experiences
of its students, making mobile learning a reality. Special
thanks to teacher Spock Tsai, who used his spare time to hone
his information technology abilities, becoming one of the few
Google lecturers fluent in both English and Chinese. He
currently helps our school organize various studies related to
information and technology. Boasting a strong network of
information and internet resources, our school hopes that such
an environment would enrich and enhance students?learning
experiences.
34th Hsinchu City Science Fair for
Elementary and Middle School
NEHS elementary and middle school
departments once again display their prowess in scientific
inquiry, winning first and second place of the group
competitions at the 34th Hsinchu City Science Fair for
elementary and middle school students. This year¡¦s science fair
topics include Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental
Science, Math, and Applied Science. Among all the participants,
NEHS students showed their team spirit through their
determination and insatiable curiosity. To the students,
figuring out the answer to their research topics not only
answered the questions in their hearts, but also brought honor
to themselves and the school. For more detailed information,
please refer to the Honor Roll on page 15. Congratulations to
all the winners, and deepest gratitude to their dedicated
instructors.
