(Patrick Kulmatycki)

Hello, my name is Patrick Kulmatycki. I come from Red Deer, Alberta. I’m teaching high-school English, including AP Language class. I have degrees in English literature and Journalism. Since 1994, I’ve lived much of my life in Asia, doing a variety of teaching and writing jobs. I’ve previously lived in Hsinchu and Taipei, and most recently spent five years at a Canadian offshore high school in Shanghai. If I’m not prepping for school, I’m enjoying good literature or reportage (with a special fondness for pop music and film criticism), studying Mandarin (and French, unpeu) or at the gym. I also spend a disturbing amount of time in bookshops, real and online. Whether I’m on the fitness bike or negotiating the shopping malls of Bangkok, you can be pretty sure I’m listening to vintage jazz (40s to 60s) or rock (60s to 90s), or the outer fringes of the hip-hop world.

I love teaching students who are intellectually curious and have a special affinity for the printed word. As a lifelong reader, there’s one emotion I never experience: boredom.

(Mackenzie Young)

My name is Mackenzie Young. I grew up in Washington State. I spent all of my adult life, until now, in Seattle. I graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in American Ethnic Studies and History. I worked in an architecture office briefly before deciding to go back to school and get my Masters in Teaching. My husband and I have traveled through much of Southeast Asia and love to travel and experience new cultures. Moving to Taiwan seemed to be a more natural fit for our international adventure because we are both part Japanese and are accustomed to Asian culture in general. In my spare time I like to paint, dance, hike, and eat new foods. I am beginning my 9th year teaching and am excited to be at IBSH.

(John Kosmach)

Hello students!!

My name is Mr. John Kosmach. I am originally from Minnesota in the US. I graduated from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN and earned a double major in History and Secondary Education. This year is my 3rd year teaching in my own class, and my 4th year overall (I was a substitute for 1 year before having my own subjects). I am enjoying being in Taiwan so far! All of you are amazing! In my time away from school I enjoy travelling and being outdoors. When I’m in the US it is common for me to go fishing and camping. While indoors, I do play my Xbox and I am fond of table games such as Settlers of Catan. I believe it is important for people to get out into the world and to explore cultures which are different from their own. This is one of the many reasons I am enjoying my time here, and I hope to continue to learn more about Taiwan every day.
