Given the eventful year and its various notable
current affairs, this year’s HSINMUN conference
theme Civil Rights v.s. Government Control
could not be more relevant. Controversies over
surveillance technology in the age of the pandemic,
global initiatives such as the Black Lives Matter
movement, civil rights protests like those in Hong
Kong and Belarus, climate change action in heavily
affected regions like the Amazon, social equality
developments in countries like Saudi Arabia and
Poland, and growing nationalistic sentiments on a
global scale all remind us that a delicate balance
between a government’s duty to ensure security and
uphold civil liberty is of paramount importance. As
delegates grapple with this complex yet prevalent
dilemma, they learn to think critically about issues
and evaluate the repercussions of various political
actions.
