Field Day A Great Success
The annual school-wide Field Day was held on November
9th. In order to celebrate this great event, each department held
contests for its students. During the opening ceremony of the event
Kindergarten students performed singing and dancing, and all the
students from the Elementary Department performed gymnastics to
cheer the spectators as well as the participants. Classes from the
Junior High Department and the Bilingual Department had a marching
contest as they entered the field. It was a very successful and
joyful event!
Mr. T.S. Jiang Elected New PTA
President
New NEHS PTA Committee members were
elected on Nov. 1st. Dr. T. S. Jiang, the President of Phytohealth
Corp., was elected by all standing committee members of PTA to become
the new President. Dr. Jiang was also our PTA President for the
school year of 1998. Congratulations to Dr. Jiang and special thanks
to former President Ma for his contribution.
Volunteer Parents Hold Their First
Meetings This Year
The enthusiastic participation
of parents in all activities has always been a source of pride for
NEHS. On October 4th, the Elementary Department held a meeting for
volunteer moms to know more about the group with about thirty parents
in attendance. Principal Tai, Dean Tseng, chairperson Ms. Ai-Lin
Liu, and vice-chairperson Ms. Lee-Lin Lee hosted the discussion.
Afterwards, the moms split up into smaller groups for workshops
in different areas. About twenty-five High School and Junior High
School Department volunteer parents assembled for a meeting on October
12th in the Administrative Building and once again elected Ms. Pei-Cheng
Hwang chairperson, and Ms. Jenny Ren vice-chairperson. Dean Fran
Lee of the guidance office presented a report detailing the work
of the volunteer group. Principal Tai expressed gratitude towards
all the volunteer parents in both meetings.
Educational Informational Forum Held in the Bilingual
Department
On the evening of September 25th,
the Bilingual Department held an educational informational forum
to better inform parents of the new teaching methods that are being
incorporated in their children's classrooms. The forum was emceed
by Ms. Janice Rossing, and four teachers spoke. Mr. Devin Kay, Mrs.
Cris Bryan, Mr. Chris Bryan, and Ms. Alison J. Kay presented topics
on: "Traditional Style of Education vs. The Constructivist
Theory and Methodology," "Alternative Assessment,"
"Effective Models in Science Teaching," and "Literacy
and Writing Workshop-Based Curriculum," respectively.
Miss Hai-Ming Wei Visits NEHS
Miss Hai-Ming Wei was invited to
the Bilingual Department on September 19th. As the successor of
the Mai (Mayflower) style of Chinese Opera, Miss Wei is famous for
her performances as leading female characters known as "hua-dan"
and "ching-yi." Teachers and students gathered together
in the music room for her presentation, "Unveiling Chinese
Opera - Farewell to the Concubine." Miss Wei gave an informative
talk on Chinese Opera and demonstrated various singing techniques
and traditional gestures and movements. Bilingual department students
went away with a deeper appreciation and understanding of this ancient
art.
Experimental Department Graduation Trip
Senior high students enjoyed a three-day graduation
trip to Tai-Dung on September 20th. Their trip included a visit
to Dong-Hwa University, Taroke Gorge, a bike trail in Guan Shan
Township, and a walk around downtown Hua-Lien. Junior high students
spent their three days in Central Taiwan amidst the trees of Shi-To
Forest, the Nan-Tao Aborigine Cultural Park, and the National Tai-Chung
Science Museum.
High School Department Conducts Patriotic Singing Contest
Tenth and eleventh graders in the High School Department
participated in the school's annual Patriotic Singing Contest. With
such creative and innovative, dignified and enthusiastic, youthful
and lively performances by each class, the competition was very
close. However, exceptional teamwork and originality distinguished
the winning class, H2-3.
Ghosts and Goblins Come Out For Some Halloween Fun
Halloween (October 31st) is here again! Aside from
their acclaimed and exciting annual costume contest, the Bilingual
Department also hosted a Halloween celebration party after school.
All Kindergarten Kids participated in a Haunted House activity.
The Elementary Department planed an entire week of festivities to
supplement their English classes. Over the course, the first and
second grades held a costume show, and the third through sixth grades
played traditional Halloween games such as "Bobbing for Apples."
The entire Elementary Department participated in a Trick-or-Treat
event.
