思源科技創意大賽
本校代表隊榮獲全國冠亞軍
2002年思源科技創意大賽決賽於十一月二日在清華大學舉行，共有北、中、南三區共十四隊，從參加初賽的七十多隊高中學生中脫穎而出，參加角逐。
本校高二4班共兩隊15名學生榮獲全國冠亞軍，抱走兩面獎牌及十三萬元獎金。此競賽是訓練學生將平常所學到的知識用遊戲的方式表現出來，進而培養學生對科學的興趣。兩隊的傑出表現，是師長們的辛勤指導和所有隊員的勤奮努力所共同成就的，實在是極大的榮耀。在此恭喜他們，也特別感謝施建輝及陳金楓兩位指導老師。(詳見內文採訪報導)

GOLD AND SILVER FROM
CREATIVE SCIENCE COMPETITION
Finals
for the 2002 Creative Science Competition, sponsored by the Springsoft
Education Foundation, were held at the Tsinghua University on November
2. Fifteen students from class H2-4 competed against seventy teams
from all over Taiwan, won first and second place, and carried home
two medals and thirteen thousand NT dollars in award money. This
competition encourages students to implement what they learn in
school through creative contests and hopes to inspire in students
an increased love of science. The outstanding performance of the
two teams resulted from successful teamwork and instruction. They
have made us all proud. Congratulations to the students of H2-4,
and special thanks to their instructors, Mr. Jien-Huei Shi and Mr.
Jin-Fong Chen.

雙語部楊清筠 盧卓恩 周平
張嘉紋同學 獲美名校 提前入學許可
雙語部十二年級楊清筠等四位同學於十二月中旬提前獲得美國著名大學入學許可，消息傳來，師生咸感與有榮焉。楊清筠、盧卓恩、周平、張嘉紋四位同學分別獲得以下著名學府提前入學許可:
哈佛大學，麻省理工學院，Harvey Mudd College，及威斯康辛州立大學麥迪遜分校。要獲得長春藤等名校提早通過入學許可，競爭者眾，相當不易，四位同學品學兼優，各方面表現皆甚為傑出，才會在激烈角逐中，脫穎而出，雀屏中選。再次恭賀楊清筠、盧卓恩、周平、張嘉紋四位同學，並祝福她們在未來的大學生活中更上一層樓。

in the middle of December. Congratulations to Catherine Chang on
her acceptance to University of Wisconsin - Madison, Cassie Chou
on her Early Decision acceptance to Harvey Mudd College, Grace Lo
on her Early Action acceptance to Massachusetts Institute of Technology,
and Michelle Yang on her Early Action acceptance to Harvard College!

第一屆旺宏科學獎
高中部張瀚同學榮獲優等獎
本校高中部張瀚同學參加由旺宏電子教育基金會主辦的第一屆旺宏科學獎，從二百多位參賽者中勝出，通過初賽、決賽作品審核及口試，贏得優等獎及大學四年每年新台幣二萬五千元獎學金。頒獎典禮於11月27日在台北舉行。張瀚同學的得獎作品是”呼拉圈穩定搖擺的律動看圓形駐波模式”。
旺宏科學獎是為啟發高中生對自然科學及應用科學領域的興趣而規劃，採不定題方式，由全國高中、職在校學生以個人組方式於每年二、三月間個別報名，第二屆即將開始收件，請同學把握機會，踴躍參加。詳細資料請上網查詢:

CHANG RECEIVES FIRST MXIC
SCIENCE AWARD
Senior
high student Han Chang competed in the first MXIC Science Competition
held by the MXIC Education Foundation and won a gross scholarship
of 25 thousand N.T. dollars per year for his upcoming four years
in college. Two hundred competitors had to pass numerous examinations.
The award was presented to Chang for his project "Discussing
Rotational Waves with the Help of a Hula Hoop's Steady Rotation"
on Nov. 27 in Taipei. The purpose of this science competition is
to initiate students' interests in natural science and its applications.
With no restrictions on the topic of research, our students are
greatly encouraged to sign up individually in February. More information

雙語部萬聖節晚會 群魔亂舞
由雙語部舉辦的萬聖節晚會於10月31日下午5時在中庭啟動。首先由六個攤位揭開序幕，有吃有玩，熱鬧滾滾。接著就在月光之下展開萬聖晚會，由雙語部兩位教師Ms.
Ellyn Lee 和 Ms. Kathleen Sloan 共同主持。共有九十多位同學參加化妝比賽，中庭裡川梭著各種妖魔鬼怪，引起尖叫連連，也夾雜著許多的欣賞與讚嘆，讓大家大開眼界!
家長們不但熱心參與、幫忙，還預備了許多禮物，頒給各項得獎的鬼怪。最後從天降下的飛天巫婆最為讓大家驚喜，得到熱烈的喝采，也結束了歡樂且難忘的一天!

HALLOWEEN PARTY: A
MOONLIGHT FIESTA
Teachers,
parents, and students gathered together after school at the Bilingual
Department quadrangle for some Halloween trick-or-treating on October
30th. Six stands offered food and games while Ms. Ellyn Lee and Ms.
Kathleen Sloan hosted the costume contest. Ninety plus students did
their best to out-do each other. There were enough “oos” and “ahhs”
to go around. Parents worked hard to prepare the activities, presents,
and not to mention prizes for the scariest costumes. The grand finale,
a flying witch, won enthusiastic applause. |

合唱嘉年華 非同凡響
實驗中學合唱團，由張玉燕老師帶領，參加2002年新竹地區五所高中聯合音樂會”合唱嘉年華”，於11月20日晚在市立演藝廳，與新竹女中、新竹高中、竹東高中、竹北高中等校合唱團共同擔綱演出。勤練多時的實中合唱團七十三位團員
在張玉燕老師指揮，張玉綸及許昕宜兩位同學的鋼琴伴奏下，精采地演唱了三首曲目，獲得如雷的掌聲。今年是實中第二次參與新竹地區高中聯合音樂會，雖然練習的過程非常辛苦，但是團員們能夠有機會跟其他學校合唱團互相觀摩學習，是難得的機會，也得到很多收穫!
在此特別感謝張玉燕老師的辛勤帶領。

CHOIR FESTIVAL
HELD ON
NOVEMBER 20
The
NEHS Choir, led by Ms. Yu-Yen Chang, performed in the 2002 Hsinchu
District Joint-Choir Festival on November 20, at the Hsinchu City
Performance Hall, alongside choirs of Hsinchu Girls’ Senior High
School, Hsinchu Senior High School, Chutung Senior High School,
and Chupei Senior High School. The annual Choir Festival provides
students with valuable opportunity to watch and learn from other
high school choirs. This is the second year the NEHS Choir has performed
at the festival. After weeks of diligent practice, the seventy-three
members, conducted by Ms. Chang and accompanied by students Yu-Kwan
Chang and Hsin-Yi Hsu, performed three pieces, winning thunderous
applause. Special thanks goes out to Ms. Chang for her hard work!

雙語部音樂高峰會 引起共鳴
本校雙語部學生社團少福社主辦的年度 “音樂高峰會”於11月29日晚在活動中心舉辦，由三位學生劉永生，黃詠文，及蔡睿共同主持。長達三個半小時的音樂會共十五項表演節目全都是由雙語部學生擔綱演出，其中有合唱，多種樂器獨奏、合奏，還有樂團表演，更有兩位老師
Mr. Bryan 和 Mr. Powers 參與壓軸演唱。全體演出人員的高水準演出，不但贏得觀眾的喝采、唱和，更讓活動中心整晚都洋溢著熱力與活力!
而當晚演出門票收入新台幣壹萬元，全數捐給世光教養院 ，更是表達了學生們關懷弱勢團體的心意。

CONCERT STRIKES A NOTE AMONG STUDENTS
The Bilingual
Department Interact Club hosted the annual Beat Concert on November
29th in the school gym. Jonathan Liu, Linda Huang, and Tracy Tsai
were the MCs for the evening. A total of fifteen official performances,
including bands and music ensembles, filled the three-hour program.
The singing, dancing, and instrumentals were five-star, winning
quite a few encores and nearly thundering applause. All earnings
were donated to Lux Mundi Nursing Home by Interact.

國立高雄師範大學周建和教授
蒞校演講
國立高雄師範大學周建和教授於11月20日應本校邀請，帶領高中部學生進行了一場生動有趣的”動手玩科學”活動。在日常生活中隨處可見的塑膠尼龍繩和汽球，在周教授的展示下，竟成為利用靜電排斥、在空中悠悠漂浮的人造水母，和可以放大聲音的傳聲筒。周教授更成功地採用學生們感興趣的物品，如迴力標、滑翔飛機、螢光棒等演示了伯努利效應以及化學反應中速率與溫度的關係。同學們看得津津有味，都報以熱烈的掌聲。

UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR JENG-HO JOU GIVES SPEECH AT NEHS
Kao-Shung
Normal University Professor Jeng-Ho Jou led the students of the
high school department in a “Playing with Science” activity. With
a single nylon rope and a balloon, Professor Jou used the theory
of static electricity to make a “floating jellyfish”. Using objects
such as boomerangs, airplanes, and glow sticks Jou demonstrated
the Bernoulli Effect and how temperature affects the rate of chemical
reaction. Mesmerized students applauded thunderously
