Fifth Grade Communication Poems

                                  ◎Instructor: Ms. Barbra Levine

During a history study about early European settlers in North America, fifth graders in the Bilingual Department wrote poems about what it would be like to communicate with people who don't speak the same language. Read below to meet some of these brilliant poets.

"Soundless Voice"

In the time of silence, nothing could be heard,
Not a whisper, a shout, or a single word.
Then, a person started waving his hands around,
But still there were no smiles in the world to be found.
No one understood, the silly actions of his,
So he wrote a message on a big sign-
And underlined it with a big line.
Then all the people understood, but still couldn't say...
All they could do was pray
That their voice would come back
One day.

-Wilbur Chen

"Expression"

Do you ever express your
EXPRESSION
In the middle of your Humanities
SESSION
When you hide your face to avoid
DETENTION?
And giggle until you end up in DETENTION!
Let me ask you a little
QUESTION...
Do you need an attitude
CORRECTION?
Now's the time to put you in POSITION.
Hatch a plan with no
SUSPICION.
Get your friends in, who cares about
DETENTION!!
Now everybody say, "Cheeeeese!"
And you're in the Guiness World Record
SECTION.
Now that's an expression!

"Communicating Without Speaking"

What's it like to communicate,
In a totally foreign place?
You awake into wonders,
And find yourself ponder,
What it's like to communicate here?
~But~
We don't just have a mind to worry,
We also have our human form to hurry.
We don't always have to speak,
We can just use our body and climb the highest peak.
We have this body to use in a million different ways,
(And they are all communicating ways!)
Guess what? We use it everyday!
A big hug means affection,
And enthusiastic cheer means, "Congratulations!"
A friendly wave means, "Hi Bob!"
And an encouraging high-five means, "Great job!"
Oh yeah, wait...
Even a smile can mean a thousand things.

"Speaking Without a Voice"

How do you do?
As my hands move,
I say, "How do you do?"
A nod, a shake,
A sign, a smile...
Are all ways of talking,
Without moving or looking.
A special key to your room of Voices.
So, as you can see,
It's quite simple to communicate
With or without your voice.

"Silent Language"

Silent language
Silent language is very useful
When you arrive to another country
You use silent language
When you try to talk to a person who is from
Another country
You use silent language
When babies are born
They use silent language
When you are shy
You use silent language.

"Communicate"

Hello, how are you?
Do you understand me?
I'm greeting you.
I'm meeting you.
Oooh, how very exciting!
Although I know it's frustrating.
Let's try to understand...
All we have to do is use our heads and hands!
We can put on a big smile,
And shake our happy hands.
We can do what we're best at and welcome
More new friends!
And though I know its hard, to be with
Someone new
We can always try to communicate,
And see from different views.

"Communicating Without Speaking"

Communicating is a great thing,
But some people can't talk.
They can smile and frown,
And they can also walk.
For the people who don't sing,
And those who can't talk,
They can use sign language,
So they can communicate.
People who can't talk,
Use a lot of ways to communicate,
Such as sign language and gesturing.
We should thank the people
Who invented sign language,
For without them,
Many people could not speak out.

“Poem About Communication”

In the Age of Exploration,
Europeans wanted to trade.
But Asian countries didn't want to,
And the Europeans' wish to trade
Began to fade.
But then the Europeans met some Natives
And their wish sprang back to life.
And Europeans went out to trade,
And forgot about their worries and strife.

BUT!!!

The Europeans had one problem,
The Natives spoke a different language—
Different from what others spoke.

BUT!!!

The Europeans did not know
That they would soon begin to trade,
Like an eruption of smoke.

And then one day the Natives and Europeans
Tried to understand each other,
After many, many tries,
They eventually became
Like brother and brother.

-Matthew Wang

“Europeans and the Native Americans”

Long time ago in the 1500s,
Native Americans lived free.
Then the Europeans came, wishing to trade with them.
Natives welcomed them with all their hearts,
And to make business with them.
Each had hard times to communicate through hands
And other recognizable parts.
It became frustrating, but they kept their patience.
They used hands and everything they could use.
It was hard, but they could make friendships
To do business and trade for themselves.
They probably did their best to communicate.
They used sign language and pointed to things…
Who knows? We'd see for sure if we could
Go on a time machine!
