The National Experimental High School 2009 Field Day takes place on November 14th (Saturday) at the field. The IBSH cheerleading squad opens the ceremony with an energetic routine, followed by the IBSH power dance and a heart warming performance presented by parents and their kindergarteners. Students demonstrate the fruits of their efforts in a series of track and field competitions, ending with the inter-department class relay, which is always the highlight of the day. When the day is concluded with the closing ceremony, students return home with memories and laughter. We hope to see everyone again on the field next year. (See page 3 for the Field Day schedule)

IBSH HOSTS FIFTH ANNUAL UNICEF FUNDRAISER

The “Trick or Treat for UNICEF” (United Nations Children’s Fund) program hosted by IBSH entered its fifth year this October. Led by Ms. Barbra Levine, this year the fundraiser combined Service-learning and Typhoon-relief into a joint theme, and the fifth graders, supporting student clubs (UNICEF, Humane and Interact) and subject teachers who integrated the “service learning” concept into their teaching joined together and held a series of fundraisers. The program reached its height on October 28th when the UNICEF carnival took place in the gym, and came to a warm closure on November 3rd at the closing ceremony where everyone’s effort was recognized and appreciated. This year, our school generated total profit of $252,703 NT dollars (around $7,600 USD). Half of the amount was donated to UNICEF, and the other half was donated to the victims of the 88 typhoon in hopes that they would be able to rebuild their homes soon. We thank all teachers, students, and parents, who made this meaningful event possible.

STUDENT AFFAIRS OFFICE HOSTS SECOND OCEANIC LITERATURE EXPERIENCE CAMP

Sponsored by the Ministry of Education, NEHS Student Affairs Office hosted the second Oceanic Literature Experience Camp which took place on the 7th-10th of July. The main theme “Sailing” symbolized voyaging toward the future life. The program started with the opening lesson “Enjoying and Analyzing Oceanic Literature” by Professor Tsai Shou-tz of National Taiwan University, and followed by an oceanic story titled “Sailing Writes Oceanic Literature” by teacher Liao Horng-che. The camp then set sail for Peng-Hu and enjoyed two more lectures there. The first one was “From Oceanic Habitat to Oceanic Literature” by local ecologist Mr. Hong Kuo-husing. Then the author of “Sailing towards Invisible Island”, Chang Tzu-de, shared his life’s experience on cruising via a dugout canoe. What excited students the most was the open seas exploring tour, which covered Green Turtle Ecology Museum, East Island Beach and General’s Island. Students learned a lot and had a whale of a good time during this four-day and three-night event. Special thanks to the utmost devotion of the teachers from IBSH and several other schools, and to the NEHS staffs for their administrative support. (See p.12-13 for more details)

IBSH HOSTS FIFTH HSINMUN CONFERENCE

IBSH hosted the 5th HSINMUN Conference on October 24th and 25th. This year, along with the Security Council (SC) and Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), HSINMUN expanded to include the Human Rights Committee (HRC). Committees discussed issues ranging from nuclear weapons in North Korea and Iran, to promoting sustainable development through trade liberalization, to Uyghur rights in China. After much effort and contribution from teachers and students for the past five years, HSINMUN is now gradually being recognized by high schools from all over Taiwan. A record high of three hundred and fifty students from 11 high schools, located in Taipei, Hsinchu, Tainan and Pindong, participated this year. With the knowledge and experience they gained from the conference, we strongly believe that these students will become more aware of worldwide issues, strengthen their decision-making skills, and make this world a better place to live in. Much gratitude to the IBSH administrative staffs, teachers, and students for their contributions in making this MUN conference a great success, and we hope to meet everyone again next year.
