As a teenager, what can you do to prepare yourself

to be a responsible citizen?

As the keen competitiveness soared rapidly in our society, the sudden development of technology, transportations, mass media were like tsunamis, crushing into our lives. Teenagers undoubtedly will become the generation to face and adjust to this whole new world--global village. Only when we are armed with all kinds of skills and a full preparation can we embrace our future world, instead of falling victim to its ever-changing pace.

As a teenager, firstly, we should take responsibilities. Since we are the backbones of our country, our shoulders are our faiths, to bear any difficulties. That does not necessarily mean we shouldn’t make mistakes. “To err is human; to forgive divine”, but to reflect on ourselves and courageously face the consequences are true repentance. Furthermore, equipping ourselves with various abilities are the keys to entering the global village. The proficiency of both English and Chinese, the mastering of technology, the professional knowledge in a certain field are a must nowadays. To keep abreast of this ever-changing world we should make good use of the handy information around us. From television to internet, these are what caused the information explosion. Since international events bind with our living more directly, a daily check of all international and domestic news should become a part of our routine. Also the issues of our environment and our society, such as global warming, deforestation, the destruction of our ozone layer, our welfare system, the educational issues should be lain more emphasis and care of.

Accomplishing a distinguished individual work is great, but what leads the world’s new trend now is the power of team work. The ability to socialize, properly negotiate, schedule plans, dominate the positions has become more and more important. A team’s work specialized all kinds of people in professional fields; a proper combination surely does a multiplied job. All in all, we should have an aggressive, adjusting attitude and a fine interpersonal relationship as we embrace the concept of a global village. Nothing is forever stabilized. Concepts of old knowledge, new findings of the explanation of our environment could all be over thrown some day. Upon facing the changes, we should have a young heart to accept them and be humble to learn them.

Being citizens of this ever-changing world, we teenagers are the generation to lead the society with our enthusiasm. Hold tight, fasten your seatbelts, we are on a ride preparing to pass a tunnel to the future and we truly are gonna rock the world!

What’s a citizen? And what’s a responsible citizen?

The ancient cities of Greek considered a responsible citizen to be the one who positively engaged in politics. Two thousand years later, under the authoritarian ruling of Ivan the Terror, a good citizen is the one who worshiped and admired the king. The standard of a responsible citizen varied from the Era of Democracy to that of the Absolutism. Even nowadays, we see so many different paradigms of model citizens being held in the perspectives of different cultures. So is there a rudimentary standard that conveys the essence of the citizen spirit? A standard which one should apply for the sake and common will of our society?

Eighteenth century American philosopher Henry David Thoreau had proposed the idea of civil disobedience, which encourages the “illegal but right” act against government’s unjust ruling. Thoreau implied that citizens are not responsible for the government; instead, citizens are responsible for the society which they live in. The citizen spirit is not the one with myopic piety towards government’s policies. It is the enthusiasm under the surface of laws and orders, the enthusiasm to make society a better place to live that makes citizen spirit so profoundly glow in the modern democratic countries. The altruistic act of a high school student who gives up his weekend and volunteers to clean up the ravages after typhoon, a kid who helps the elderly cross the street, and anybody-who brings their own forks and spoons when he(she) goes out to eat. These acts are not required by laws, but are done for the common will of the society, state the real spirit of a responsible citizen.

But does it mean that we don’t have the obligation to obey the rules of the society? What will our world be if everybody acts egocentrically, regardless of other people’s needs? In eighteenth century, philosophers finally came up with an answer to these questions. John Locke, Thomas Hobbes, and Rousseau all came up with a theory called the “social contract”. It states that the government is the product of citizen’s consent, and that the government acts upon the favors of people. It also warns that it the society is unrestrained and functions without rules, human’s greed and selfish nature will deteriorate the society and the world would go back to the Dark Age. The Enlightenment’s philosopher indicated the necessity of citizens to comply with the social orders, or laws, which the majority of people agreed upon. This is not only a theory; we can see this in our everyday life. A madman arrogates himself the right of killing people, a thief broke into people’s houses and take their properties without restrictions, or a kid who just throws his gum right on the street. These acts are life-threatening, property-stealing, and environmentally harming. If there are no punishments against these crimes, our society wouldn’t differ from that of the animals, which everyone fights for their own goods and survival.

Other than thinking considerably for others and avoiding illegal acts, the modern society considered citizens to have another important quality, which is to positively engage in the global issues. You do not engage in the global issues with lunatic mind or unconstructive comments though, you engage in it with sense and sensibility and know clearly what you are capable of on helping to solve the issue. Take global warming for instance, a president or government could establish laws to restrain the industrial pollution, an ordinary student like me can help too, by riding bike to school or taking public transportation system. Just weeks ago, earthquake shook Indonesia again, and the whole island was turned into a wasteland like a World War II village capitulating without order. Knowing that people are suffering thousands of miles away, what will you do? It’s the choice between what you want to do and what you are capable of doing. And a responsible citizen has to be discreet about the kind of help he could offer, and the kind of help the victims need. In order to do this, we need to be more ware of what’s happening in the world, or even in your own country now. The awareness of current events is another way to become a responsible citizen, because a responsible citizen is the one with the zeal of caring where he (or she) lives.

So back to the start, what’s a responsible citizen? And what do me need to prepare ourselves to be responsible citizens? A responsible citizen is the one who is considerate about others, and even more positively thinking about helping others. There are so many ways to reach these standards, you could ride bike more frequently instead of driving everywhere, don’t throw away garbage on the road, and even easier, you fulfill the simple duties of your own-- helping your mom with chores, or do a nice job at your cleaning area at school. And these are what a citizen spirit is all about -- caring about your society, and make it a better place for you, for others, and for the sake of everyone.
