Our School Hosts an Anti-Disaster Drill
Demonstration
The Anti-Disaster Drill was held on October
19, 2011. The magnitude of the drill was massive, and the
Principal Christine Huang was Chairwoman, with Student Affairs
Coordinator Wang Xiao-bing in charge of coordinating the
activity. There were 1100 students and teachers participating,
along with esteemed representatives from government agencies
such as the Taiwan Typhoon and Flood Research Institute, the
Anti-Disaster Education Guidance Group, and schools such as the
National Hsinchu Senior High School. All together there were 24
representatives from 18 groups participating in this
demonstration. The four themes were: improving communications in
disaster-stricken areas and forming emergency squads to deal
with the disaster, emergency resuscitation and rescue of the
wounded, fire extinguishing and evacuation, and control and
accurate reporting of disaster situations. The event was a huge
success. We hope that the demonstration will improve the ability
of teachers and students to respond to emergency situations.

Elementary Department Educates Students on
Birds and the Environment
As the Autumn season approaches, the Hsinchu
City government also began its annual water bird activities. Our
Experimental Elementary Department combined its curriculum with
a series of bird-related activities on 9/30, 10/14, and 10/21 to
advocate environmental studies and increase awareness. Chairman
Chen of Wild Bird Society of Hsinchu was invited to educate 5th
graders on Taiwan’s native birds and on wildlife protection
methods. The 2nd and 3rd graders were taught about bird habits
and actions by teachers Ms. Gao and Ms. Chen, respectively. They
will also be working with the science fair team, “Flying Feather
Journey? to conduct research in the school and surrounding
environment for one entire year. The lecturers used lively and
interesting methods to explain the natural world to the
students, slowly taking them closer to nature step by step. They
taught students how to listen to the calls of the birds and make
sharp observations of the changes in our environment. After
experiencing the valuable lessons, the students should be able
to respect life and cherish Taiwan even more.
