Chiang Mai¡A Thailand
12A ¼B¥@¸sSean Liu
Water rushes past my knees as my toes do what
they can to cling on the rocks. Right in front of me is a
two-story waterfall. “Come on Sean, jump!?my daredevil friends
yell. Even though I’m six feet tall, I’ve never liked heights. Be
a man, I tell myself as I bend my knees to keep my balance. Just
as I start inching forward, my right foot loses grip on the
mossy rock and I’m thrown on my back. The river takes hold of me
and before I know it I’m plummeting to my death. I shut my eyes
and crash butt first into the ice-cold pool of water beneath.
Every part of my skin tingles, and I resurface fully awake and
alive. “WOOH!?I cry, “Let’s do that again!?/P>
An hour later the group and I are riding in a
van, heading to our next village Ban SaiNgam. While I sink into
my seat and relax, I think about everything that has happened in
the last few days.
Just a week ago we had all arrived in Chiang
Mai, Thailand as complete strangers, all volunteers for Rustic
Pathways Foundation. Our counselors whisked us away into rural
Thailand, to a village school called Nohbo Academy. There we
worked for ten days constructing cement block walls in
classrooms and in a new auditorium. We also got to know each
other ?I became close friends with Cory, a soccer goalie from
Wisconsin, and Julia, an aspiring singer who loves to box.
Today is a day of relaxation, a reward for
our hard work at Nohbo. The sun quickly sets, and we stop at a
city called Pai along the way to shop and eat at a night market.
Tired and hungry from jumping off the waterfall, we wander
around the night market in search of tasty authentic pad Thai.
Cory taps my shoulder, “Dude, look at that.?I turn around and my
jaw drops to the ground in disbelief. Standing ten feet from us
is a transvestite, but no ordinary transvestite. He, she, it is
split right down the middle. Its left half is wearing a slick
black suit and has the face of a man, and its right half is
wearing a flashy pink dress and has the face of a woman. It
looks at us, smiles, and says “Sawasdeekaa,?which means “hello?in
Thai. Transfixed, we forget about our hunger and spend the rest
of the night taking photos with the half-man-half-woman.
The following day we arrive at our second
village, Ban SaiNgam. The villagers welcome us with traditional
Thai singing and dancing. Well-rested and energized by the
villagers, we begin the day’s work with intensity and focus. In
one week, we finish a building a water retention tower, painting
the village school, and constructing a cement floor and tin
walls for the spirit worship house. On our final day in
Thailand, the village shaman holds a “string ceremony,?during
which he blesses each of us with a string necklace, asking the
village spirit to protect us from harm. The village also hosts a
farewell feast for us, and we gorge ourselves on the succulent
roasted pork. We join the villagers in their singing, and
although we don’t understand the language we know what it means.
Both the villagers and we know that our service work will make a
positive difference in their daily lives ?that's what we’re
singing about.
I will always remember my experience in
Thailand. Thailand has brought me together with some of my best
friends. It has shown me what service truly means, something I
would never have encountered at home. Most importantly, Thailand
has given me the adventure of a lifetime, and I will always
grateful.

Summer has been a time when students usually
go out to chill at home and to slowly morph into a bean bag
chair. On the other hand, for my last four summers, I’ve been
morphing into my computer chair and interning at an
architectural company located in San Francisco. Although most
adults will say that work is much harsher than school, I would
beg to differ in the years I’ve been at LTC Design Group. This
summer, I’ve worked on projects located in China in areas such
as: Cheng Du, Hu Fan Qiao, and Wu Han.
In Cheng Du, I participated in the modeling
of five schemes and the finishing touching for the axon views
for each. The time spend on the project amounted to around one
month, in which a team of 4, including me, participated in the
modeling and pre and post rendering touches of the project. Each
of the schemes composed of two mixed-used sky scrapers and a
smaller residential tower.
Hu Fan Qiao was a project that carried on
from last year. In order to have a larger success in one of the
competitions the company was participated in, the head architect
decided to submit a total of four schemes. For two months, one
of the principal architects and I worked on the design of a
scheme which was later modified for another. In relation to the
culture in the area, the design composed of a traditional
Chinese lattice window structure for the outside curtain wall
design. The stone walls were connected in such a way to resemble
a flying Chinese dragon. In order to incorporate a mixture of a
Chinese and modern design, the inner corridor’s glass was
designed with black, grey, and white colored glass panes in a
modernist style orientation to make the building feel much more
lively. The water which follows in a continuous loop around the
whole of the building is to give the building a closer feeling
to nature, especially since running water is considered one of
the most relaxing sounds.
The last project, located in Wu Han consisted
of four different schemes with designs ranging from stone heavy
design to glass heavy design. For this particular project, I did
not participate in the design, but rather the post rendering
editing of the buildings. Some of the most fun is during the
post editing. For instance, the tone of the rendered view could
dramatically change from a more evening feeling to a daytime
feeling with a few brushes using Photoshop. The most eye opening
aspect of which I did the editing was exactly how much one can
change a picture to make the building that was once mundane,
into on that stands out.
