The NEHS Field Day was Held on November 12
The much heralded 2011 Field Day was held on
Saturday, November 12. During the opening ceremony, the little
athletes of the Kindergarten Dept. led the procession, wowing
the crowd with their youthful exuberance. What followed was each
class from the other departments marching on cue as each class's
quirky, creative introduction blared from the podium. This
heated up the show for the day. The power dance was directed and
led by the Elementary Dept.'s Dean, Ms.Peng. The participants,
5th and and 6th graders from the Elementary Dept, performed an
aboriginal dance. They used costumes created during art classes
to complement their spirited dance moves. As they left the field
amid great applause, the IBSH Cheer Squad became the spotlight,
performing death-defying tricks that impressed the crowd. Though
the schedule was hindered by the rain, with the speedy
efficiency of the Coordinating Team, many preliminary and final
events were still held throughout the day. The climactic
showdown of the Class Relays was followed by the 7th to 9th
graders' and the Faculty races. Amid the tension and the fun,
the field day ended with shouts of laughter and joy.
Elementary Department 5th Grader Yu-yen Lee
Class 5 takes 2nd place and First Class Excellent Environmental
Observation Award in the National Geography Contest
In the finals of the 7th annual National
Geography Contest on November 5th, there were over one hundred
elementary students who have survived the preliminary’s which
consists of 1941 participants and gathered at Taipei to show off
their knowledge in geography and observational skills. Fifth
grader Yu-yen Lee in Class 5 took the silver medal along with a
First Class Excellent Environmental Observation Award with his
geographic prowess. The Environmental Observation question this
year was for the students to sketch out a plant distribution
chart of their home school, hoping to encourage learning through
hands-on experience. Yu-yen Lee compared illustrations and
photographs of the 31 different kind of plants in our school,
discovering there was a large diversity. With his attention to
detail and careful observations, he was awarded Excellent for
his Environmental Observational Skills.
High School and Middle School hosts Global
Multicultural Curriculum
2011 Global Multicultural Curriculum, hosted
by the Office of Academic Affairs with the co sponsorship of
NCTU Association of Business, invites foreign volunteers to
introduce their national cultures in order to promote Taiwan's
international outlook and students' international perspective.
This activity will be hosted on every Tuesday and Friday lunch
time and afterschool from 11/29 to 12/30. There will be students
from Vietnam, Indonesia, Ethiopia...etc discussing issues on
"How foreign students view Taiwan," and "How foreign students
see the world."
The NEHS Elementary Department and SpringSoft
Education Foundation held a Natural Environmental Observation
Contest on November 19th.
Quite different from the regular science
contests, this Observation Contest focused on developing the
capability of observation. The contest adapted the group contest
model. Before the contest, teachers had small size preliminary
around the campus to improve the design for the final contest.
The formal contest had six checkpoints: plants, measurement,
location, history, observation, and wacky science. The purpose
of the contest was to help students develop a more comprehensive
observation of their surroundings. Through the experience from
this contest, the SpringSoft Foundation tried to promote the
concept to other schools. By improving the basic science concept
and skills, the Foundation hopes to develop a more solid science
education.
IBSH hosted 2011 UNICEF charity events

2011 UNICEF donation is food, health and nutrition which are
used in the poster and t-shirt competition. Furthermore, the
UNICEF had charity events, such as lunch and t-shirt sells,
music concerts, walkathon, coin war, and the carnival.
Naturalist Writer Mr. Liu Makes Speech at
School
The teachers of the Elemetary Department
invited poets and naturalist writer Mr. Liu to make a speech at
school on 11/16, and the topic was "My Recent Teaching Practices
in Science". The speech varied from "Trees", and "how to treat
the young trees on the campus" to "seeing the world from tiny
objects", further explaining how to create a visualized home and
lastly he shared stories on his own adventures. Mr.Liu talked
about the experiences of his daily life, including culture and
natural environment. The teachers and parents at the speech had
great response and motivated everyone to be more aware of
Taiwan's nature. He promoted the thought of having a beautiful
homeland. Mr. Liu is a poet, a novelist, a traveler, an essayist
and a nature observer at the same time.
