The IBSH UNICEF Carnival
Sheryl MacLeod
October was Unicef month at IBSH. Students participated in a
number of different activities to try and raise money for this
wonderful charity. We donated NT$51,895 to Hong Kong Committee
for UNICEF.
The two main events that the students hosted were the annual
walk-a-thon and the Unicef Halloween Carnival.
The walk-a-thon took place on a Friday afternoon and other high
school students were invited to join the event. Students raised
money by getting people to sponsor them for an amount per lap
walked. The students left the basketball court and headed around
the lake. At the end of each lap they are given a rubber band to
count their laps. When they have finished their laps they
returned to the basketball court, turned in their rubber bands,
and got their sponsor sheets to go and collect the sponsored
money.
The other major fundraising event was the Halloween Carnival.
The day started off with the younger students going around the
school to trick-or-treat and then all going to the gym for the
carnival. The carnival had games, food, a costume contest, a
haunted house, and toys and books for the students to buy. The
booths at the Halloween Carnival were run and organized by
either classroom parents or students, and they were responsible
for setting up, selling, and cleaning-up once all the fun had
finished.

Yearly UNICEF Walkathon for
2017
Ethan Chien (Vice President of
InterAct club)
IBSH InterAct Club has been established for 13 years now and the
initial inspiration for us to help those in need has not strayed
from our sight. For the past seven years, InterAct has hosted
the Walkathon event annually to raise money for UNICEF
International and a local center for the mentally delayed, Lux
Mundi.
Walkathon promotes physical health while contributing to local
and global charities. Participants find sponsors to back them
for walking or jogging around the Jin Shin Lake behind our
school. The number of laps would indicate how much money they
would collect from their sponsors. Ultimately, the participants
would collect their money from their sponsors give the money to
InterAct Club, who serves as a medium for donation to the
mentioned organizations.
This year, Walkathon took place on a Friday, October 20th. Like
previous years we invited Guangwu and Hsinke Junior High Schools
to the event, and made the addition of inviting Pacific American
School and Keyuan Elementary School. Despite the inclement
weather that day -- cloudy with a slight drizzle -- the turnout
rate was still high. We were moved by the sincerity of the
participants and touched that our motto of “service above self”
has extended beyond our club members and to the general
community. We hope that all the participants enjoyed Walkathon
and we look forward to seeing them again next year!
