Cupertino

Guidance Office Hosts Parent Education NLP Workshop to Increase Teachers’ Abilities
In order to keep up with the ever-changing society, it is important for not only students but also teachers to increase and enhance their abilities. Every year, NEHS organizes workshops in various topics for teachers, including special education, gender equality, family education, parenting education, and guidance and discipline. In the 2018 academic year, the guidance office hosted a special parenting education NLP workshop. NLP, also known as Neuro-Linguistic Programming, is a therapy that combines the knowledge of psychology, physiology, neurology, and linguistics. Since the 1970s, it has been widely used in the US for multiple areas, such as personal development, psychotherapy, interpersonal relationships, and business management. Throughout the workshop, teachers hope to find resources and ways to improve themselves, enabling them to have a better interaction with parents and students and to enhance students to discover and unleash their potential.

Cupertino students visit once again
NEHS has had a close relationship with high schools in Cupertino, California for many years through the Cupertino Hsinchu Sister City Association (CHSCA)--a relationship that has gradually progressed through numerous years of exchange student programs. This year was no different. A total of 25 American students visited Hsinchu in April through the help of the CHSCA, all of who were scattered around various students’ homes. Seven NEHS students partook in this exchange student program, and voluntarily hosted 7 of these 25 students not only to get to know these American students better but also to introduce the Taiwanese way of life to them. These exchange students were all welcomed, enthusiastically, in their temporary classes by teachers and students alike. This proves for once and for all that even in the face of the world’s rapidly-growing isolationism, we as adolescents wield the ability to bridge together diverse peoples through mutual respect and open-mindedness.

Mother’s Day Activity Grand Opening
Mother’s day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May. The NEHS elementary department hosted a Mother’s day activity in order for students to show their gratitude toward their mothers. On April 19th, the fourth and the fifth grade students held a “Making a ball bottle” activity, where students added different essential oils and poured it in a bottle, allowing the liquids to mix evenly, along with a beautiful handmade card for their mother. On April 26th, the sixth graders held an “I love Mom” activity, where students made tea bags for their mother as a mother’s day present. On May 3rd, the third graders prepared a “Making Tea for Mom” activity, where students made tea bags for their mother, allowing them to taste their children’s love from the tea. The second graders wrote a letter to their mother, showing their gratitude with words and drawings. As for the first graders, the students made colorful eggs along with a handwritten card for their mothers. On May 1st, the kindergarten department hosted a parent-children activity, where the teachers made four different games for the parents and children to enjoy. The first game was called “Pregnant for 10 months,” where parents and children used their hands and legs to roll the balls. “Creative Parents and Children Picture” was a game where they used leaves, yarns, and beads to make a necklace or a bracelet and take a picture afterward. On the “Loving Mommy” game, children respectfully poured tea and gave their mother a relaxing massage. For “Imprinting Love” activity, parents and children used their hands to create an artistic painting full of love. May is a month of gratitude. Happy Mother’s Day!

The Application of Board Games
One of the primary aims of the IBSH department this school year is to incorporate the theme of “Cruising in Creativity, Discovering and Uncovering Hsinchu” in course curriculums. To realize this goal, IBSH administrators and teachers invited various Hsinchu locals to share their experience in self development and creative thinking. They invited Mr. Rong-Che Hsu (“Accupass” manager; novelist; scriptwriter; director; experienced “board gamer”) to the “Application of Board Games” event, whose objective was to arrange components into working order by following a set of basic rules. Translating to academia, students who ride the flow of board games learn more effectively. By understanding certain rules of order and applying them to textbook material to deduce concepts and thinking (the “components” of game), students are essentially playing a board game in everyday learning. Not only does this metaphor strike true, it also strengthens the learning experience of students who master this “fun” approach to school.

NEHS English Resource Center
As a result of bilingual policies implemented by the Taiwanese government, NEHS has established an “English Resource” platform (such is located on the upper left corner of the main page of the NEHS library website). There are plenty of online resources, such as links to videos and radio stations and other tools that aid students in learning the English language. Students can now utilize these resources anytime without time constraints, and thus are now able to better improve their English abilities.
