Life of a lawyer
Reporters: 9A Aileen 9B Paula
Beth Chien currently works as an in-house legal counsel for Mediatek. Because law is not an
undergraduate degree in the US, she first graduated college, and then went to law school. When other third
years were partying, Chien studied to pass the Bar exam to become a lawyer.
Studying law requires reading quickly and a lot. Although most people might think that all attorneys
are extraverted, Chien said, “Research shows that most lawyers are introverted, and speak only because it is
their job”. Good communication and analytical skills are the most important to be developed for law related
careers.
The life of a lawyer is a busy, speedy, stressful one where they are always on the run and face new
assignments everyday with a tight deadline. Being flexible and working under pressure is daily life. That
said, another important trait for a lawyer to face these problems consist of a high Adversity Quotient, Chien
stated. AQ is the ability of a person to deal with adversities in his or her life, since they need to work under
a short period of time without any time to stress. They as well need to be social and assertive, as lawyers
need to come to face their problems and what’s bothering them without any hesitation. Therefore, all these
personality traits are needed for a positive-outlook onto this profession.
