讀冊做伙行 校際讀書會成功舉行
本校耕心社與新竹高中書香社的同學於四月二十日下午在本校進行一場校際讀書會研討活動,此次活動所研討的書籍以男女大不同為引導,並另以腦內乾坤一書為輔,為慎重起見,本校同學在會前即已聚會做過兩次討論。活動當天,先由活動組黃書穎同學帶大家做一些暖身活動讓彼此熟悉一下,接著分成六組,由各組的導讀人帶領進行討論,最後再聚集在一塊交換意見,分享心得。耕心社指導老師劉玲秀老師表示,此次活動在該社社長胡心宇及副社長徐志維分工合作策劃下,進行的相當順利,相信同學們透過此次和校外同學的交流一定收穫甚豐。

雙語部周多多同學榮獲美國全國卓越獎學金
雙語部十二年級周多多同學參加學業成就測驗前測,成績優異,在眾多角逐者中脫穎而出,榮獲美國國家卓越獎學金,確為殊榮。每年約有一百萬名美國高中生參加此次競賽,其中約有五萬名學生進入初步候選名單,經進一步篩選只有七千七百人能進入最後總決選,競爭十分激烈。在此恭賀周多多同學,也預祝他今年畢業後繼續在大學中同樣有耀眼的表現。

高中部同學赴美參加2002年
       美國高中數學聯盟數學競賽
本校高二四班吳安倫、宋彥朋及林亦辰三位同學獲選台灣代表隊,將於五月三十日赴美參加2002年美國高中數學聯盟數學競賽,此項活動在台灣舉行甄選初試時共約有九百多人報名,最後共選出七十五名,組成五對參賽,台灣代表隊這次將參加在加州聖荷西大學舉行的西區競賽,在此也預祝這三位同學表現優異,順利成功。

實中絃樂團跨校公演
實中絃樂團與新竹高商管樂團將於六月一日晚間假清大大禮堂舉行聯合公演,節目上半場先由兩校分別演奏,下半場則共同合奏貝多芬命運交響曲及李斯特匈牙利幻想曲。為了這次的跨校合作,本校絃樂團A團的同學定期利用週六上午赴新竹高商一同練習,培養彼此的默契,希望透過這次的跨校活動能達到彼此切磋互求進步的好成績,也歡迎師生家長抽空前往聆賞。

人力車美勞作品特展
在楊紋紋老師的指導下,國小部四年級小朋友所創作的人力車美勞作品於五月三日至五月十日在國小部公開展覽一星期。小朋友所用的不過是些木輪、塑膠管、木枝及鐵絲等再普通不過的材料,然而透過慧心巧手設計所呈現的人力車,造型迥異,巧妙各有不同,無論是輕巧的二輪車、載貨的四輪車或是手推木板車在在顯示了同學的創意與用心,吸引不少人駐足欣賞。

走路馬拉松開走
由少年扶輪社及關懷社所合辦的走路馬拉松比賽於五月十七日順利展開,該活動除了能提供同學們強身健走的機會,更將募集捐款給慈善機構,為了鼓勵大家踴躍參加,主辦單位還根據同學們所跑的圈數及所募得的款項準備摸彩券給參與的同學,希望大家一起來共襄盛舉,助人利己,實在是一舉數得。

大學入學多元方案家長座談會
面對實施在即的大學入學多元方案,輔導室為協助高三家長輔導學生選擇指定考科以及考完之後應如何做適切的志願選填,特於五月十八日假國小部多功能教室再次舉辦家長座談會,此次座談會亦歡迎高二同學的家長一同來參加,以早日為同學預做準備。

國小部英語競賽成果斐然
國小部英語科教師為提昇學生的學習興趣,特於四月十九日、二十六日及五月三日上午舉辦英語科班際競賽,四年級的小朋友參加的是英語歌謠比賽,經由老師在課堂上的指導與練習,無論是Do Rei Me、Red River Valley或是Color Song,小朋友唱來都是字正腔圓,曲曲動聽。五年級的小朋友則是以說故事比賽一決勝負,在正式比賽前,各班即先在班內舉行初賽,經過選拔,每班由兩名同學代表參賽,由於小朋友皆經過相當充分之準備,在舞台上無論是姿勢、臉部表情及英文聲調皆十分生動自然。至於六年級小朋友的英語口語問答比賽就更緊張刺激了,每班分成十組,輪流上台回答五個問題,這些問題都是由裁判根據上課內容來設計提問,最後再加計總分分出高下,雖然場面緊張,但同學們秩序良好值得稱讚。從這次的比賽可以看出小朋友學習英文的興致十分高昂,感謝老師辛勞的教導,也希望小朋友繼續加油。

Hsin-Chu High School Book Club Visits NEHS
On April 24th, members of the NEHS Gung-Shin Club met with students from Hsin-Chu High School Shu-Shiang Club for a book discussion based on the book, Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus. In preparation, the students from the Experimental Department had two previous discussions. When the two clubs met, Shu-Ying Huang of the activity council led some "warm-up" exercises to break the ice. Afterwards, discussions proceeded within groups of six, with each group led by a group leader. Gung-Shin Club's supervising teacher Ms. Ling-Shio Lui says that this activity planned by club president Tsin-Yu Hu and vice-president Chi-Wuay Hu was successful and students gained a valuable learning experience.

Bilingual Department Jacob Jou Wins the National Merit Scholarship
Bilingual Department senior Jacob Jou performed exceptionally well on the PSAT examination and won the National Merit Scholarship. Every year approximately 1,000,000 American high school students participate in this competition. Of the 1,000,000 students, 50,000 proceed to the semifinals and only 7700 become finalists. The competition is fairly intense. Let us congratulate Jacob Jou for his outstanding performance and wish him the best of luck with future endeavors in college.

Three High School Students Compete in American Regional Mathematics League
Three excellent students An-Lun Wu, Yen-Pon Sung, and Yi-Chun Lin from the High School Department will be heading towards the United States for the annual competition sponsored by the American Regional Mathematics League on May 30th. Nine hundred students attended the preliminary in the Taiwan district, and seventy-five of them qualified for the team, which will then be divided into five groups. These three students along with other representatives of Taiwan will be competing at San Jose State University in California. Let us wish these students the best of luck.

NEHS String Orchestra Will Perform in Joint Concert
On June 1st, the NEHS String Orchestra will perform with the Hsinchu Business High in the Chinghwa University Auditorium. The first half of the concert will feature separate performances; the second half will feature joint renditions of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony and Lizt's Hungarian Fantasia. We hope the constant practice and development of camaraderie will result in an unforgettable concert. All teachers, students, and parents are welcome to join them for a night of music.

Unique Vehicles Go on Display
The hallways of the Elementary Department became a gallery for an unusual display during the first week of May-a motorcade of unique vehicles was set out for all to admire. These vehicles, including bicycles, four-wheeled trucks, and push carts, were the creations of fourth graders. Under the instruction of Ms. Yang Wen-Wen, the fourth graders designed and built extraordinary vehicles out of ordinary wheels, plastic tubes, sticks and wires. Many a passerby stopped by to admire the display during the week.

Walkathon 2002: Be Healthy and Be Helpful
Walkathon 2002, an annual event sponsored jointly this year by the InterAct and Key Club of NEHS, was scheduled for May 17. Its gave students a chance to exercise with friends and classmates while raising significant sums to donate to the Lux Mundi Center for mentally impaired children. To encourage participation in this activity, participants could receive a number of raffle tickets, the number of which is determined by a combination of total laps run and money collected. NEHS is proud to see our students make efforts to make the world a better place

Conference on the Diversified College Entrance Routes
Concerning the application of the diversified college entrance routes, the guidance room of the High School Department arranged a conference on May 18th at the Elementary Department's multi-functional room especially for parents of senior students. This conference aided parents to help their children choose the correct designated subject test and showed them how to complete the majors priority form. Parents of sophomore students were also welcome to attend the conference to make early preparation for their children.

Elementary Department English Competitions
To increase students' enthusiasm for learning English, the English teachers of the Elementary Department hosted English competitions on April 19th, April 26th, and May 3rd. Fourth graders competed in an English singing contest. Thanks to careful instruction from their teachers, they pronounced words well and sang beautifully. Fifth graders participated in an English storytelling contest. Each class was represented by two students. With their excellent pronunciation, intonation, facial expressions, and gestures, the young storytellers were obviously well-prepared. Sixth graders had the most exciting time, competing in their own quiz show. Each class was divided into ten teams which took turns answering questions. Although the atmosphere was tense, students remained orderly. Elementary students proved their English proficiency and enthusiasm for learning in these competitions. We hope that both students and teachers will keep up the good work!
