Greeetings fellow teachers, staff, students and parents! My name is Kathie Bergsma and I'm the new third grade Humanities teacher. I'm pleased to be a part of the NEHS family.
I grew up in Tucson, Arizona in a family of six children. I moved to Southern California for college and graduated from California Lutheran University with a B.A. in Liberal Arts and a minor in English. My student teaching focused on teaching English as a second language. After teaching elementary school in Moorpark, California for two years I moved to the beautiful city of Portland, Oregon. In Portland I taught junior high school English and U.S. History. Thank you for the warm welcome to Taiwan. I'm confident I will have a great year at
NEHS!

Hello!
I am the new fifth grade Humanities
teacher. I had the privilege to work at
NEHS once before, from 1998-2001, and I am
honored to be back. I am from Iowa, the
Heartland of America. I earned my
undergraduate degree in Elementary
Education from the University of Iowa and
my Master's in Education at Antioch
University Seattle. This is my sixth year
teaching. Some of my interests include:
health, philosophy, spirituality and
religion, and the creative arts. I
sometimes write poetry, and have a dream
to join a performing arts group one day. I
consider myself a learner just like my
students. I look forward to learning from
and with all of my students, parents, and
colleagues this year. |

I am very excited to be working at NEHS. I have found the students a lot of fun to work with, my fellow staff members helpful, and Hsinchu a very convenient city to live in. I have taught six years in the Sequoia Union High School District in Redwood City, California. Many parents and students at NEHS have lived in this area of California, which has given me a nice feeling of camaraderie. My wife is a music teacher and is enjoying working part time at Hsinchu International School. She is also teaching students piano in our home. Our six-month old daughter, Sophia, is also setting in quite nicely into life here in Taiwan. I am happy that I have been able to continue my hobbies of scuba diving and playing soccer, though I still have yet to go kayaking here in Taiwan. Already this year is great and I am sure it will continue getting better.

Warm greetings to everyone. I am originally from the great state of Illinois, the home of the greatest U.S. president – Lincoln. I am married to a wonderful Japanese woman named Hiroko. I hold a M.A. in Political Science from Western Illinois University, a B.S. in Communication, and a minor in Human Biology from Illinois State University. I am New York State certified in Social Studies and Biology. I have taught in Tanzania, Albany, New York, Venezuela, and I am happy to be teaching here in Hsinchu. My hobbies include reading, travel, good movies, eating, and feeble attempts to play the guitar. I enjoy listening to all kinds of music, but prefer blues and the Rolling Stones. We are very happy to have settled in Taiwan, and hope to experience the region in full. We also wish to express our thanks to the hardworking staff and administration at NEHS for all they have done to make our stay here an enjoyable one.

First
of all, I want to say how excited I am to be
teaching and living in Taiwan. I have found NEHS
to be a wonderful working environment full of
friendly, helpful people. As a 5th year teacher,
I'm a bit of a journeyman in that I've taught many
subjects outside of my Chemistry and Biology
endorsement area. My main motivation as a teacher
is to have fun helping the student learn the
requisite tasks while also learning things for
myself along the way. I also have several hobbies
that include foreign cultures, nature, almost any
kind of sports, movies, and traveling. My
long-term goal is to learn more about Asia and its
people. I would also like to learn how to speak
Chinese. |
