Dr. Lian's Speech: A Journey that Changes

In cooperation with the Quanta Culture & Education Foundation’s “ Quanta 2009 <Roaming Through Art> African Exhibit” campus tours activity, our NEHS library invited Dr. Lian to give a speech on “A Journey that Changes” in both English and Chinese. Dr. Lian uses humor, combined with picture after picture of his African endeavors, to share with the NEHS students his encounters in Burkina Faso, from starting up the “trash for clothes” activity to digging wells for the people. Dr. Lian’s passion was infectious, and students listened with rapture attention. During Q & A, many touched students asked, “what can we do to help as students?” Dr. Lian’s moving speech had not only educated everyone about conditons in Burkina Faso, but at the same time awakened the global citizen in everyone.

Bilingual Department Hosts Science Fair

Bilingual student from grades 4 through 6 participated in a science fair during the morning of March 20th. Many teachers, parents, and even Dr. David Brown from WASC were invited to judge the projects. Our students impressed all the guests with their eloquent introductions and replies. These projects are exhibited in the hallway of the 2nd floor of the bilingual department, and we encourage everybody to take a look at the results of our students’ efforts.

The Dancing Competition for the Elementary Department was held on a Friday morning on March 20th. A total of 34 teams signed up and competed after five months’ worth of practicing with original choreography, and the high level of skills and creativity was evident in the results. The choreography and costume designs were both marked for immense improvements from last year’s competition. Aside from the dancing, the MCs were also students from the Elementary Department, not teachers or administrators. Congratulations to the winners and all the competitors, for much was sure to be gained from this experience, and we look forward to next year’s competition!

Mr. Yen-Buo Chen Lectures at NEHS

Mr. Yen-Buo Chen gave a lecture about his journey to the North Pole on March 4th. Faced with such extreme circumstances, Chen talked about how the experience was a test not only for the team’s physical and mental states, but also their cooperation. The journey greatly changed Chen’s perspective and values in life. His story greatly inspired everyone, and left everyone more confident in their own challenges. Chen also encouraged students to never give up, for only with much perseverance did he himself achieve his dreams.
