On Monday, March 13, six students
from Kochi Ozu High School Students along with two teachers
visited IBSH. We were each assigned to one of the six students
to guide around our school. Despite the language barrier, we
still managed to ask them questions regarding their school and
family backgrounds. I’ve learned that they have seven classes in
one grade: six normal classes and one science class; those six
students are all part of the science class! According to Sora
Akagami, the person I was assigned to, most of the people in his
class have great interest in physics and chemistry. One of the
things I really like about them is their politeness; although it
took us quite a while to understand each other, they were very
patient and didn’t show any sign of frustration. Towards the end,
Sora Akagami even gave me a few adorable gifts! It was certainly
a great experience to have the opportunity to lead them around
our school!

I started my day as a student
ambassador thinking that the Japanese students would be
taciturn, shy individuals seeing as they were new to Taiwan and
to the Chinese and English languages. In fact, they were very
friendly, polite, and agreeable once you talked to them, and had
an English vocabulary advanced enough to give a detailed
presentation on rare sugars. Instead of mostly teaching them
about IBSH, I found myself learning from them as well. Overall,
being a student ambassador was an illuminating and educational
experience.

While IBSH itself is already a
blend of cultures, when the students from Japan visited, we were
introduced to something entirely new. A school with a very
science-oriented program, Kochi Ozu High School came mostly to
tour Hsinchu Science Park companies, but a small culture
exchange was also in store for us. I'll have to say, this was my
favorite part of the visit -- when we brought to them some
authentic Taiwanese boba and they gave us some of the cutest
Daiso accessories! It's things like tiny ªwÄÑ that makes me want
to visit Japan and hopefully see our new friends again.

Every moment shared with the
exchange students created bridges between our cultures and
helped us learn more about each other and the different
environments that we grew up in, enlightening us with more
global perspective.

Meeting the Japanese students from
Kochi Ozu High School was certainly a remarkable experience for
me. I really enjoyed spending time with them, and was able to
learn more about their lives as high school students in Japan. I
was also exposed to the language barrier between them and us,
which was mostly broken thanks to a classmate, who speaks
Japanese and was able to translate for us. Their gifts were
absolutely delightful, and I do regret not having had any in
return. Even after they departed from our school, I've been able
to contact one of the students, Kuge Ryuki, who I had been
assigned to. This was a wonderful opportunity, and I would
definitely enjoy a chance at another such experience in the
future.

We were able to have deep
interactions with many students at the National Experiment High
School.
They guided us around the school
and listened to our presentation actively. They were active
about everything. We were able to have good experiences.
Thank you so much! Please come to
Kochi and visit our school as well!!

I really enjoyed the day, and I
think it helped my studies.
Everyone was friendly and spoke to
me. I was very happy and I enjoyed it. In addition, I was
surprised by the difference in our schools. For example, we have
to wear a school uniform every day at our school, but your
school does not have to wear a uniform every day.
In the chemistry class, the
students would experiment by themselves using the manual. I
thought that this lesson was very memorable because I could
think about it by myself so it was really good.
I think that these experiences have
been good for me.

I was surprised at your school.
Your school students enjoyed every class and they advanced and
gathered up a student council for themselves. So I think they
have a way of thinking and studying that is different from us
along with good leadership skills. I will regard the various
things that I learned during this time as important.

Thank you for this day.
I was most surprised at the
robotics lesson. Our school doesn’t have a robotics lesson, so I
was very excited. I think that it is very amazing to move the
robot by trial and error.¡@In addition, I was surprised at the
time of the break time and motivation to do the class.

The other day’s visit became a very
good memory for me! Because I could make many friends and have
valuable experiences such as the robotics classes.
I want to see everybody again and I
want everybody to know about Japanese things too.

I was able to learn various things
this time at the National Experimental High school.
Because everybody was nice to me
very much, I could enjoy learning about the programming of
machines.
I was surprised that young children
were learning very advanced studies.
If there is another opportunity, I want to visit Taiwan
again.
