合唱、管樂、弦樂、國樂社團參加新竹市音樂比賽 表現優異 
本校合唱、管樂、弦樂、國樂四社團,十二月五日於新竹市立演藝廳參加九十一學年度新竹市音樂比賽,均獲佳績。合唱團與管樂團榮獲甲等,弦樂與國樂團更是獲得優等之殊榮。他們當日於新竹市立演藝廳的表現獲得在場師生的一致肯定與讚賞,四社團都將晉級參加全國音樂比賽,期勉他們繼續努力,為實中及新竹市爭取更大的榮耀。特別感謝張玉燕、魏思偉、蔡幸娟、林玲真、以及劉江濱老師的辛勤指導!

國小部學生黃可凡   翻譯美兒童文學名著   即將出書
國小部六年七班黃可凡同學於去年暑假翻譯著名美國兒童讀物“夏綠蒂的網”一書。此書是美國兒童文學的經典之作,作者為 E. B. White 。黃可凡花了二十三天的時間翻譯的中文版全書共五萬六千字。 聯經出版公司編輯人員細讀之下,大為讚賞,積極進行出版事宜,已取得美國方面正式授權簽約,本月間即將出版發行。黃可凡從小大量閱讀課外讀物,中英文俱佳,譯作文筆流暢自然、生動傳神,極為難得。雖是初試啼聲之作,已見功力不凡。師生均感與有榮焉,並祝福無限。

國中數學競試 參與熱烈
本學年度國中部數學競試於12月18日中午在數學、社會、資源教室進行,由陳惠珠老師出題辦理,國一、國二學生自行報名參加。報名人數非常踴躍,共有 120 位同學參加競試,各年級一、二、三名各取一、二、三人。經過激烈的競爭,國一4班何應佑和國二1班林昱劭戰勝群雄,分別奪得年級冠軍。(優勝者名單詳見榮譽榜)

2003年NRC暑期研究名單確定
加拿大國家研究院已連續五年提供本校學生於暑假期間到該研究院及渥太華大學進行六週的暑期科學研究,今年第六年由實驗部林奕辰、江博遠,雙語部王詩嫚、黃中威四位高二同學獲得這項榮譽。在此預祝他們一行成功愉快,收穫豐碩。

國小部六年四班 班級讀書會搬上舞台   作家可白女士應邀蒞臨觀賞指導
國小部六年四班,由導師莊雅婷帶領指導的班級讀書會,經同學票選,一起閱讀可白女士的著作“ 二哥情事”
。同學們不但讀得起勁,寫作心得,還自己設計學習單,改編劇本,更於11月29日把故事搬上多功能教室的舞台,全班同學上場演出。而可白女士當天蒞臨觀賞,更是系列活動的最高潮 !  小兵出版社並把六年四班整個活動系列,列為讀書會範例,印成專頁,跟全國中小學師生分享!(詳見內文)

國小部溫馨媽媽工作團 期末聚餐   選出新任團長、副團長
國小部溫馨媽媽工作團於1月2日在家政教室舉行期末聚餐並進行改選。林文珍女士、林淑滿女士當選為新任團長、副團長。在此感謝劉璦玲女士、李麗玲女士過去一年帶領志工團的熱忱服務並感謝所有志工家長的付出。

慶祝聖誕及新年活動   熱鬧精采
為慶祝聖誕節,幼稚部於12月23日在活動教室舉辦耶誕同樂會,Kelly老師帶著小朋友們開開心心玩遊戲、學英語、慶聖誕。雙語部於12月21日在活動中心舉辦聖誕晚會,表演節目豐富活潑,學生、家長、教師同樂,大家都玩得盡興 !  高中部學聯會則於12月31日晚上七點半至十點半舉辦跨年舞會,活動中心看守嚴密,只准學生進場,不讓家長掃興。高中生們穿著正式,紳士淑女或翩翩起舞,或駐足談笑,都度過了一段難忘的歡樂時光,共同迎接嶄新、美好的新的一年!

本校退休數學教師葉東進   在交大藝文中心舉辦個人畫展
從中學部退休的葉東進教師於去年12月23日至今年元月15日在交大藝文中心舉辦個人“ 四度空間”畫展。畫作展出期間,得到各界人士的注目及討論。本期實中園地特別邀請跟葉老師共事多年的中學部王文秀老師,撰文介紹葉老師的畫作以及從事繪畫的歷程。葉老師多年來始終秉持著對繪畫的執著,退休後更是專注耕耘,終能開墾出這一片茂密的果園。在此向葉老師寄上深深的敬佩和祝賀!

FOUR STUDENT MUSIC CLUBS BRING GLORY TO NEHS
The  NEHS Choir, Wind, String, and Chinese Orchestra clubs  attended the 2002 Hsinchu Music Competition on December 5. The choir and  wind  ensemble  received high  honors  for  their  performance, while the  string  and  Chinese  orchestras  were awarded outstanding achievement. Their accomplishments that day at the Hsinchu Performing Arts Center performance brought praise from all in attendance  and  advanced  them all  to  competition at the national level. We wish them continuing excellence, bringing  honor upon our  school  and upon  Hsinchu. Special  thanks  to  the  coaching efforts of Ms. Yu-Yen Chang, Mr. Se-Wei Wei, Ms. Hsin-
Chuan Tsai, Ms. Lin-Jen Lin, and Mr. Jiang-Bing Liu.

ELEMENTARY STUDENT KE-FANG HUANG'S TRANSLATION OF CHARLOTTE'S WEB TO BE PUBLISHED SOON
Sixth  grader  Ke - Fang  Huang of  the  Elementary  Department  spent  twenty-three  days  last  summer  translating  E.B. White's 
Charlotte's  Web. Her  translation  of  the famous children's novel, with  its word count of  fifty-six thousand characters, was highly praised  by  editors of  Linking  Publishing  Company. Linking Publishing Company  has already  received  authorization  from the American publisher of Charlotte's Web, and the  translated  novel is due for publication this month. Having read many novels since 
a young age, Ke-Fang  Huang  exhibits mastery of both English and Chinese. Although Charlotte's Web was only her first attempt, Ke-Fang has already  displayed  great  powers as a translator. We at  NEHS are proud to see such remarkable talent and promise in such a young child and anticipate the success that may await Ke-Fang Huang.

FUN MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH CONTEST ATTRACTS OVER ONE HUNDRED PARTICIPANTS
On December 18, the annual NEHS middle  school mathematics contest attracted as many as one hundred and twenty students and required three classrooms to hold all  the contestants. Ms. Huei-Ju Chen was in charge of  designing the test, which was open to all seventh and eighth  graders to  sign  up.  From among  students who  participated, one first place, two second place, and three third place winners were selected from  each of the two grades.  Shining  through the tough  competition were Yin-Yo Ho and Yu-Hsou Lin, the first place winners of grades seven and eight respectively. 

2003 NRC SUMMER RESEARCH PROGRAM LIST FINALIZED
The National Research Council of Canada has provided  opportunities for  NEHS high school level students to take part  in research 
at  their institutes for  six weeks every summer for the  past  five years. This year,  Experimentals Yi- Chen Lin and Bo-Yuan Jiang 
and Bilinguals Diana Wang, Brian Huang  were  selected  through competition to  gain the  honor of  attending  this  program. Best wishes to them on their trip!

FAMOUS WRITER KE-BAI VISITS ELEMENTARY DEPARTMENT
Class of 6-5 in the  Elementary  Department organized a book club and had a series  of activities going on  during the  semester. On November 29, students of 6-5 put the story of Second Brother's Love Affairs written by Ke-Bai on stage in the multifunction room. Each of all thirty-eight students in the class got a role to play. Most excitingly to all, Ms. Ke- Bai showed up to attend the event. She watched the students' performance with enthusiasm and gave them a talk afterwards. Everyone had a wonderful time! 

EXPERIMENTAL DEPARTMENT VOLUNTEER MOMS GATHER FOR ELECTION
The Experimental Department Volunteer  Moms Committee held an end-of-semester luncheon on  January 2 in the cooking  class-
room. During the luncheon they elected new officers for the coming year. Attendants elected Ms. Wen-Jen Lin and Ms. Shu-Mang Lin as the new president and vice president, respectively. We would  like to  express our thanks for Ms. Ai-Ling Liu, Ms. Lee-Ling Lee and all the volunteer parents for their past contributions and hard work. 

CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS A BLAST
To celebrate Christmas, the  Elementary Department  hosted  aparty on December 23  in  the  activity  room. Teacher Kelly and her students  enjoyed games, celebrated  Christmas, and practiced some English along the way. The Bilingual Department also enjoyed their Christmas concert, held on December 21 in the gym.  The  program was  spectacular and  everyone had a  good  time.  On the same note, the  High School Department had their own dance to countdown the New Year with a party held in the gym on Decem-
ber 31 which lasted from 18:30 to 22:30. Wearing tuxedos and gowns, students danced and chatted the night away. 

RETIRED MATH TEACHER MR. JIN-DONG YEH HOLDS ART EXHIBIT AT NCTU ARTS CENTER
Retired High School Department math teacher  Mr. Jin-Dong Yeh held an oil painting exhibit entitled“ Four Dimensions” at the NCTU Arts Center  from December 23 to January 15. His oil paintings received great attention  from people in all areas. Ms. Wen-
Shou Wang, a colleague of  Mr.Yeh for many years at NEHS, has written an article introducing Yeh's painting career, artistic ideals
, and theory. Since retirement,  Yeh  has been able  to  devote  even  more  time  to  his  love  of painting. The  result  of  his  artistic dedication, Yeh's exhibit, has been a great success. Congratulations, Mr. Yeh!
